CARUSO, ENRICO
Autograph Letter SIGNED in English on emblematic "Hotel Cecil" stationery 4to London May 30 1906
Caruso writes to John Ridgely Carter an American diplomat stationed in Great Britain noting "Confidential" at the top of the page. "I am sorry I cannot give you a definite reply because the terms of my contract with the Royal Opera Syndicate require that all engagements of the kind you propose must pass through the Syndicate." He signs "Enrico Caruso." In the spring of 1906 after he lived through the San Francisco earthquake in April of that year Caruso returned London to sing at Covent Garden. He reprised his popular roles in "Rigoletto" "Pagliacci " "Tosca" "La Traviata" and "Don Giovanni" for a total of twenty-nine performances under his contract which ended July 26. Classically framed with printed photograph by Mishkin showing Caruso standing full length in costume for "Un Ballo in Maschera." Image framed and full dimensions on request. unknown

CARUSO, Enrico 1873-1921
Original caricature signed believed to be of the French composer Paul Dukas 1865-1935
189 x 149 mm 7.5 x 5.75". Dated 1913. Blue pen and wash.

Slightly worn and foxed especially to verso; creased at upper edge and central fold; remnants of adhesive to upper corners of verso.

Together with:
A handsome postcard photograph of Caruso seated stylishly dressed with cigarette and cane in hand. 136 x 84 mm. with the name of the photographer's studio Brogi printed to lower right edge of recto the name and London address of the publisher Breitkopf and Härtel and "Printed in Germany" printed to verso. Slightly browned; remnants of adhesive to verso. While Caruso's self-caricatures are possibly the most desirable to opera collectors his often insightful drawings of composers singers conductors etc. are also valuable iconographical records. See Sisca: Caruso's Caricatures NY Dover 1977 for a comprehensive overview of the caricatures.

"The famous tenor Caruso was a skilled amateur caricaturist who portrayed himself in operatic roles and drew humorous portraits of friends as a release from his stressful professional life. Since 1903 Caruso had lived in New York for part of each year while performing at the Metropolitan Opera and sent opera-related caricatures to La Follia a local Italian-language newspaper." Website of The Metropolitan Opera New York

"With his original treatment of traditional forms his highly inventive approach to musical drama and his importance as a teacher and writer Paul Dukas occupies a central position in French musical history. Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg but also remains important in his own right. His reputation rests on only a small number of compositions notably the Piano Sonata Ariane et Barbe-bleue the ballet La Péri and L'apprenti sorcier. Dukas's influence as a critic from 1892 to 1932 can be compared with Debussy's; his informed opinions reveal great sensitivity to the musical and aesthetic changes that took place during the period." Caruso, Enrico and Luisa Tetrazzini
The Art of Singing
New York: The Metropolitan Company 1909. First Edition. Hardcover. Paper pastedown on boards. Good. 8vo. 24 by 15 cm. 71 pp. With two plates each with a photo of the respective singers. The plates are on a glossy stock and accompanied by tissue guards. Binding solid in terms of holding book together but spine perished with all of original paper pastedown gone. You see mostly the flexible card that is essential for the binding architecture and this somewhat minimizes the conspicuousness of the missing layer in this volume at least in our view but you do catch a glimpse of the mull the fabric mesh binding material and the gatherings and obviously this is undesirable. The boards' paper pastedown are heavily stained and soiled. The prelim leaves and final leaves are stained. Otherwise the leaves are generally clean with very occasional light stains and the copy is solid. On the title page the address for the Metropolitan Company publishers is crossed out -- it was printed as a 42nd Street address and in ink below is written 8-12 East 34 Street. The opera house -- the original or old house was on Broadway and took up the entire block of 39th to 40th Street with its back elevation on Seventh Avenue. We have not looked into this. We assume the inked address is the accurate one at the time. We have no idea who would have made this correction nor whether this correction was made in other copies. We do not think this will be an issue for most people interested in the title. The Metropolitan Company hardcover
