"GLORIA" - Presentation Copy to Enrico Caruso
Milan: Edoardo Sonzogno 1907. First edition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Piano-vocal score. TThe libretto by Artur Colautti based on a play by Vitorien Sardou. 8 263 pp. 4to. 22.5 x 29.5 cm 9 x 11.5 inches. Later full red morocco spine lettered in gilt previous owner's name in gilt on front cover all edges gilt original wrappers bound in; matching full red morocco slipcase. Presentation inscription from the composer to tenor Enrico Caruso on the half title. From the collection of Jane Hohfeld Galante 1924 - 2010 pianist and music scholar.

Caruso created roles in many of Cilea's operas but was not among the cast of this production. 'Gloria' was Cilea's final opera opening at La Scala on April 15 1907 conducted by Arturo Toscanini and was a box office disaster closing after only two performances. Perhaps the composer hoped that getting the score into Caruso's capable hands might somehow spark some further interest. Edoardo Sonzogno unknown

Enrico Caruso original name Enrico Caruso 1873 —1921 the most admired Italian operatic tenor of the early 20th century and one of the first musicians to document his voice on gramophone recordings. Caruso was born into a poor family although he was a musical child who sang Neapolitan folk songs everywhere and joined his parish choir at the age of nine he received no formal music training until his study with Guglielmo Vergine at age 18. Within three years in 1894 he made his operatic debut in Mario Morelli's L'Amico Francesco in Naples at the Teatro Nuovo. Four years later after adding a number of impressive roles to his repertoire he was asked to create the role of Loris in the premiere of Umberto Giordano's Fedora in Milan. He was a sensation and soon received engagements in Moscow St. Petersburg and Buenos Aires. He made his La Scala debut with La Bohème 1900. In 1901 after being unfavourably received in his performance in L'elisir d'amore in Naples reputedly because he refused to pay an extortion fee to ensure he was applauded he vowed never again to sing in Naples and he kept his word. He then created the chief tenor parts in Adriana Lecouvreur Germania and La fanciulla del West and for the La Scala company the tenor roles in Le Maschere and L'elisir d'amore. World recognition came in the spring of 1902 after he sang in La Bohème at Monte Carlo and in Rigoletto at London's Covent Garden. He made his American debut in Rigoletto at the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on Nov. 23 1903 and continued to open each season there for the next 17 years presenting 36 roles in all. His last public appearance—his 607th performance with the Metropolitan—was as Eléazar in La Juive Dec. 24 1920. Caruso became the most celebrated and highest paid of his contemporaries worldwide. He made recordings of about 200 operatic excerpts and songs; many of them are still being published. His voice was sensuous lyrical and vigorous in dramatic outbursts and became progressively darker in timbre in his later years. Its appealing tenor qualities were unusually rich in lower registers and abounded in warmth vitality and smoothness. Salome was first performed in New York on January 21st 1907 at the Metropolitan Opera House where it caused a nine day furore because of the shocking plot which tells of the lustful Salome's desire for the prophet St. John the Baptist. The widespread hostile reaction to the opera with Solome's frenzied Dance of the Seven Veils and her kissing the dead lips of the Baptist's severed head given to her on a silver platter was a favourite topic of discussion of its day. Caruso obviously took great delight in marking this event with a series of caricatures. Park Benjamin 1849–1922 American patent lawyer physician and writer. In 1918 one of his daughters Dorothy 25 eloped with Caruso who was 45. Benjamin opposed the marriage citing the differences in their "ages nationality and temperament." Another of his daughters married that year and Benjamin was also conspicuously absent from her wedding. In 1919 Benjamin legally adopted Dorothy's long time governess Anna M. Bolchi as his daughter. His wife was ill and living in a sanatorium at the time. Caruso died in 1921 and Benjamin the following year. He left each of his biological children one dollar in his will. The adopted woman Bolchi was left the bulk of the estate worth half a million dollars. The text of the will was printed in the newspapers with its scathing comments on the children. "Because of their long continued persistent undutiful and unfilial conduct" they had "acted less as children than as parasites and who have defied me." 1907, etc. unknown

CARUSO Enrico 1873 1921
Autograph note on a postcard to the singer pedagogue and husband of the noted soprano Adelina Agostinelli Giorgio Quiroli. Signed in full by both Caruso and the conductor Vincenzo Bellezza 1888-1964
Postmarked New York March 11 1918. In black ink. With a colour photograph of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to verso. In Italian with translation. Caruso sends his compliments to an aunt and uncle. "Congratulations to Aunt and Uncle Ceasi. Greetings and thanks." Somewhat worn soiled and creased; remnants of adhesive to corners of verso. In a double-sided black paper mount. "The winning quality of the sound the tender mezza voce particularly in the early years and his phrasing based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition his noble incisive declamation his broad generous phrasing and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings now faithfully remastered on CD not only made him universally famous they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Quiroli was a singer pedagogue and husband of the famed soprano Adelina Agostinelli 1882-1954. Vincenzo Bellezza 1888-1964 studied at the Naples Conservatory and made his debut at the S Carlo with Aida in 1908. "A reliable and skilled conductor he combined attention to detail with consideration for the singers and achieved performances that were effective at the time rather than memorable in retrospect." Piero Rattalino in Grove Music Online. unknown

CARUSO Enrico 1873 1921
Fine original photograph by the New York photographer Mishkin of Caruso in the role of Raoul in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots. Signed with an autograph inscription "To Miss May Hiscose" dated 1915
8.5" x 4.5". Double-matted framed and glazed. From the collection of Marilyn Horne b. 1934. A distinguished American mezzo-soprano "Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top. In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene proof of her exceptional versatility. Throughout her lengthy career she was an admired recitalist singing lieder mélodies Spanish and American songs with equal aplomb." Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. unknown
