Together with: A handsome postcard photograph of Caruso seated stylishly dressed with cigarette and cane in hand. 136 x 84 mm. with the name of the photographer's studio Brogi printed to lower right edge of recto the name and London address of the publisher Breitkopf and Härtel and "Printed in Germany" printed to verso. Slightly browned; remnants of adhesive to verso. "With his original treatment of traditional forms his highly inventive approach to musical drama and his importance as a teacher and writer Paul Dukas occupies a central position in French musical history. Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg but also remains important in his own right. His reputation rests on only a small number of compositions notably the Piano Sonata Ariane et Barbe-bleue the ballet La Péri and L'apprenti sorcier. Rare Card from the Monkey House Scandal
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare and amusing postcard printed with a joke about the 1906 scandal surrounding the great tenor. Printed on the cover is the question "Where did Caruso touch the lady"; a window in the cover opens to show a monkey in a cage with the punchline "In the monkey house." Overall toning; two slight splits to the fold and a small tear at the corner of the window flap; otherwise in very good condition overall. 3.25 x 5.5 inches 8.5 x 14.3 cm.<br>In November of 1906 Caruso had been charged with an indecent act allegedly committed in the monkey house of New York's Central Park Zoo where he was accused of pinching the bottom of a married woman. Caruso claimed a monkey did the bottom-pinching but he was found guilty as charged and fined 10 dollars. The so-called Monkey House Incident with the complicated court case that followed caused a huge scandal with particular outrage among New York's high-society opera-goers. unknown

"The winning quality of the sound the tender mezza voce particularly in the early years and his phrasing based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition his noble incisive declamation his broad generous phrasing and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings now faithfully remastered on CD not only made him universally famous they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Autograph Letter Signed in English on emblematic "Hotel Cecil" stationery 4to London May 30 1906
Caruso writes to John Ridgely Carter an American diplomat stationed in Great Britain noting "Confidential" at the top of the page. "I am sorry I cannot give you a definite reply because the terms of my contract with the Royal Opera Syndicate require that all engagements of the kind you propose must pass through the Syndicate." He signs "Enrico Caruso." In the spring of 1906 after he lived through the San Francisco earthquake in April of that year Caruso returned London to sing at Covent Garden. He reprised his popular roles in "Rigoletto" "Pagliacci " "Tosca" "La Traviata" and "Don Giovanni" for a total of twenty-nine performances under his contract which ended July 26. Classically framed with printed photograph by Mishkin showing Caruso standing full length in costume for "Un Ballo in Maschera." Image framed and full dimensions on request. unknown books

"With his original treatment of traditional forms his highly inventive approach to musical drama and his importance as a teacher and writer Paul Dukas occupies a central position in French musical history. Dukas was not only an influence on many French 20th-century composers and others such as Zemlinsky and Berg but also remains important in his own right. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A very striking original press photograph of the great tenor lying in state with a young boy looking down into the coffin. Press caption on the verso reads translated from the German: "In honor of Caruso's memory his body which was embalmed at the time of his death and is wonderfully preserved is dressed every three years in the latest fashion. The ceremony which is not widely known to the public is carried out by his closest friends." 5.1 x 7.3 inches.<br>Caruso's body was preserved in a glass sarcophagus at the Del Pianto Cemetery in Naples after his death in 1921 until his wife had his remains sealed in a stone tomb in 1929. unknown books

Rare Card from the Monkey House Scandal
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare and amusing postcard printed with a joke about the 1906 scandal surrounding the great tenor. Printed on the cover is the question "Where did Caruso touch the lady"; a window in the cover opens to show a monkey in a cage with the punchline "In the monkey house." Overall toning; two slight splits to the fold and a small tear at the corner of the window flap; otherwise in very good condition overall. 3.25 x 5.5 inches 8.5 x 14.3 cm.<br>In November of 1906 Caruso had been charged with an indecent act allegedly committed in the monkey house of New York's Central Park Zoo where he was accused of pinching the bottom of a married woman. Caruso claimed a monkey did the bottom-pinching but he was found guilty as charged and fined 10 dollars. The so-called Monkey House Incident with the complicated court case that followed caused a huge scandal with particular outrage among New York's high-society opera-goers. unknown books

From the collection of Jane Hohfeld Galante 1924 - 2010 pianist and music scholar. <br><br><br />Caruso created roles in many of Cilea's operas but was not among the cast of this production. 'Gloria' was Cilea's final opera opening at La Scala on April 15 1907 conducted by Arturo Toscanini and was a box office disaster closing after only two performances. Ownership copy of Tito Ricordi II with his ownership signature upper left corner front fly dated by him 14.01.05 January 14 1905 with an original self-profile in ink by Caruso signed and dated by him 1908. Caruso 1873-1921 the famous Italian-born tenor was also a renowned caricaturist who made sketches of many famous people but often of himself as mementoes to famous personalities or figures in the opera world. This self-portrait was apparently sketched for Tito Ricordi 1865-1933 heir to the historic music publishing company Casa Ricordi founded in 1808 by Tito's grandfather violinist Giovanni Ricordi. The Ricordi company repertoire represented one of the world's most important sources of opera and classical music; early in its history the company purchased the music library of LaScala and published the works of Rossini Bellini Verdi and Puccini. The Ricordis were not only publishers but also impressarios of careers and fortunes in the opera world. This self-portrait presented by Caruso to the Ricordi heir represents an association between the major opera performer of the time and the major arbiter of opera culture and commerce of the period. $1750.
