Venice & Los Angeles CA: Abbot Kinney Co. Nov. 20 1909. One large silver gelatin photo sized 7.5 x 9.25 in. mounted on thin gray studio board sized 10.5 x 13.5 in. block lettering on verso referring to date and indicating it was sent by the Abbot Kinney Co. minor creasing to image very slight minor scuffing still a VG- image with strong bright contrast. An exceedingly scarce original promotional photo for the Aquarium & Museum built at the end of Abbott Kinney’s famed amusement pier and patronized by visitors on the Balloon Route Excursion train operated by the Los Angeles Pacific Railroad Electric Railway Co. The Venice Aquarium was opened in January 1909 on Kinney’s Pier and featured some of the finest marine specimens of any private or public Aquarium on the West Coast. A fish hatchery and sea lions were located in the rear of the aquarium. The aquarium later became the official marine biological station for the University of Southern California. Unfortunately in 1920 a month after the death of Kinney the entire pier was destroyed in a fire including the popular aquarium. C. 1890s Group of Gravure Architectural Studies of the Ornamental Columns & Building Details of St. Mark's Basilica Venice
Italy: No Photographer Noted 1895. A series of loose plates with tipped-on photographs on paper in black and white; about 1/2 of the plates with 2 images; sizes vary with the largest approx. 10" x 13" and ranging to 3" x 6" for those having 2 plates per page; especially well-taken with gravure quality and fine detail; views of the upper cupolas; ornate frieze-work; many of the column-tops and detailed ornamentation; no photographer or studio indicated; some with numbers on the plates which correspond to numbers found in the impress margins and with an additional sequence of numbers found at the edge of the stiff-paper matte-surround; the mounts make these 12 1/4" x 15 1/2" approx.; small rubber stamp of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts on the backs of the mounts which is the only marking; occasional spotting on the mounts some with some darkening towards the margins and edge-chipping wear a little rippling too; imagery generally very good and clean; a good collection and a detailed reference for this Venetian architectural masterpiece. . "Paul of Venice who lived from 1369/72 to 1429 had a varied and successful career as a leader of his religious Order as a diplomat for the Council of Venice and as an academic. His most successful work was the Logica Parva but his most substantial treatise was the Logica Magna . Both works were closely based on the writings of earlier fourteenth-century logicians from Oxford where Paul had studied and from Paris where he may have visited. The Tractatus de Obligationibus is a particularly rich source for mid to late fourteenth-century doctrines. In it Paul describes the rules which logic students were obligated to obey in disputations designed to test their logical skills. In the sources of his discussion of these rules Paul raises problems not only in formal logic but also in the philosophy of language. The author has provided notes to explain the more obscure parts of Paul's discussion and which contain full references to his sources.
