In 8° (18,5x11 cm); 192 pp. Senza legatura ma non slegato ma esemplare in barbe ed in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Piccola xilografia al frontespizio. Prima rara edizione, un solo esemplare censito in ICCU, di questa raccolta di lettere del Cardinale Borromeo. Carlo Borromeo (Arona, 2 ottobre 1538 - Milano, 3 novembre 1584) celebre arcivescovo cattolico e cardinale italiano fu canonizzato nel 1610 da papa Paolo V. Attuando nella diocesi ambrosiana la riforma tridentina, vivendo costantemente in ascetica povertà, Carlo Borromeo dedicò la sua azione pastorale alla cura delle anime e alla riforma dei costumi, promuovendo oltre al culto "interiore" anche il culto "esteriore" - riti liturgici, preghiere collettive, processioni - ravvivando in tal modo la fede, l'identità e la coesione sociale soprattutto dei ceti più popolari. È considerato patrono dei seminaristi, dei direttori spirituali e dei capi spirituali, protettore dei frutteti di mele; si invoca contro le ulcere, i disordini intestinali, le malattie dello stomaco; è patrono della Lombardia, del Canton Ticino, di Monterey in California, di Salò, di Portomaggiore (Ferrara), di Rocca di Papa (Roma) e compatrono di Francavilla Fontana in Puglia. Rarissima prima edizione in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione.

Acquatinte stampate ad inchiostro bistro, 1781, firmate in lastra in basso a destra e datate in basso al centro. Magnifiche prove, impresse su carta vergata coeva con filigrana, sottili margini, leggere abrasioni al verso, nel complesso in eccellente stato di conservazione. Serie completa delle quattro famose vedute del carnevale romane incise dal Sandby su disegno di David Allan (Alloa 1744 - Edimburgo 1796). Alla grande maggioranza di pitture, incisioni, acquerelli e disegni che illustrano le feste del carnevale romano con un eccesso di "colore", si contrappone questa serie, che descrive quei medesimi festosi eventi con un asciutto e spiritoso sguardo pur rilevandone la nascosta eleganza e sontuosità. Le acquetinte di Sandby sono tratte da una serie di dieci disegni di Allan eseguiti durante i suoi soggiorni romani e ora conservati nella Collezione Reale del Castello di Windsor.La tecnica dell’acquatinta, conferisce all’opera quel particolare tono simile all’acquarello rendendo le opere molto affascinanti. Raro set completo in straordinario stato di conservazione. Dimensioni 550x370 circa ognuna. Paul Sandby was a landscape painter and printmaker. David Allan was one of the first painters in Scotland to record the everyday life of ordinary people. He was based in Rome from around 1767 to 1777 where he painted historical subjects, portraits and the everyday life around him in a series of watercolours. In Scotland he enjoyed a successful career as both an artist and a teacher of art. Some of David Allan's watercolours of Rome were copied by Paul Sandby in London, as prints. The technique of aquatint (used here) allowed the engraver to create the effect of colour washes with the addition of etched lines for detail. This is a technique that provides an additional layer of meaning to the scene. The aquatint allows tonal variation and contrast which in turn creates atmosphere. There is a tremendous amount of detail in the print, and any British observer at the time would have received a good impression of what Rome was like from this print. Sandby's re-creation of Allan's watercolour would have made the image much more accessible through multiple copies. Only the most popular or marketable images would be copied as prints. The composition is quite complex. The background of the street and buildings is rendered with single point perspective, where the landscape appears to recede away to a single point in the distance. The viewpoint Allan chose was a low one. This means that the buildings appear to loom over the scene and a lot of sky is shown. In contrast, the action on the ground occupies only the lower third of the composition; Allan did not "zoom in" on any one aspect but created a general view of the scene. In this view, two British travellers on horseback are confronted by the extravagant costumes and masked figures from the entertainers at a Roman carnival. Despite their politeness these grotesque figures are slightly disturbing. Perhaps this scene demonstrates the alien and disorientating feeling of visiting a new city and discovering bizarre customs which the traveller has never experienced before.

Pianta dei giardini del Quirinale.Della serie: “Li giardini di Roma, disegnati da Giovanni Battista Falda…nuovamente dati alle stampe con direttione di Giov. Giacomo de Sandrart” edita a Norimberga da J. Von Sandrart intorno al 1685 circa. L’opera si basa sulla serie originaria curata da Gian Giacomo de Rossi qualche anno prima (la prima edizione fu pubblicata sicuramente dopo il 1677 ma prima del 1683) che comprendeva 19 tavole di piante e vedute prospettiche dei più celebri giardini romani di cui 14 incise da G.B. Falda e 5 da Simon Felice.Le tavole di questa edizione tedesca, numerate in cifre romane, vennero tutte incise da Sandrart sulla base di quelle originarie, con poche varianti, ben evidenti dal confronto da noi condotto tra le due opere.Sorprende, pertanto, che spesso quest’opera di Sandrart circoli erroneamente sotto il nome di Falda quale autore (sbaglia anche Paolo Bellini in TIB, quando afferma che Sandrart utilizzò due rami originali di Falda) o addirittura venga considerata come un’altra edizione de “Li Giardini” di de Rossi. Acquaforte, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Von Sandrart in Nurinberg, around 1685.The work in based on the original series published in Rome by G. G. de Rossi (I edition after 1677 but before 1683) that consists of 19 plates, of plans and perspective views of the most famous Roman Gardens, 14 etched by G. B. Falda and 5 by Simon Felice.The plates for the German work was engraved by J. Von Sandrart, with slight differences with respect to De Rossi’s originals, as it’s clear from the comparison we’ve conducted between the two works.It is surprising, therefore, that often the Sandrart’s series is listed erroniously under the name of Falda as engraver (Bellini wrongly in TIB writes that Sandrart in two cases printed from the original Falda’s plates), or even that the work is considered as another edition of "Li Giardini" published by de Rossi.Etching, in excellent condition.

Grande pianta della città, stampata su due fogli reali, copia di quella realizzata da Giovan Battista Falda nel 1667 per papa Alessandro VII. Pianta a proiezione mista, orientata con il nord a sinistra. Topograficamente la carta del Sandrart è fedele a quella del Falda; le modifiche sostanziali sono nei cartigli, con le scritte in tedesco, e nella dedica a papa Innocenzo XI. Il cartiglio di destra raffigura gli stemmi dei Rioni, mentre in basso al centro sono incise delle piccole vedute delle sette chiese giubilari. Incisa a quattro mani con Johannes Meyer, questa pianta risulta per l’eleganza del segno, più raffinata rispetto al Falda, intagliata dal francese Lhuiler. "Copia della pianta piccola del Falda incisa dal Meyer che si firma in basso a sinistra Iohann Meyer fecit Tiguri. IN alto a sinistra, in luogo della dedica fatta dal Falda ad Alessandro VII, compare quella ad Innocenzo XI (1676-89) con la data 1677 e più in basso il nome di Ioachini Sandrart. La pianta è probabilmente anche contenuta nell'opera del Sandrart Der Alten und neue, pubblicata a Norimberga nel 1768" (cfr. Marigliani p. 219). Acquaforte, con margini, in eccellente stato di conservazione. Rara. Large plan of the city, printed on two real sheets, copy of the one made by Giovan Battista Falda in 1667 for Pope Alexander VII. Mixed projection map, oriented with north on the left. Topographically, Sandrart's map is faithful to Falda's; the substantial changes are in the cartouches, with the German inscriptions, and in the dedication to Pope Innocezo XI. The right-hand cartouche depicts the coats of arms of the Rioni, while small views of the seven Jubilee churches are engraved in the bottom centre. Engraved by four hands with Johannes Meyer, this plan is more refined in the elegance of its sign than the Falda, carved by the Frenchman Lhuiler. "Copy of Falda's small plan engraved by Meyer, signed at lower left Iohann Meyer fecit Tiguri. In the upper left corner, instead of the dedication made by Falda to Alexander VII, the dedication to Innocent XI (1676-89) appears with the date 1677 and lower down the name of Ioachini Sandrart. The plan is probably also contained in Sandrart's work Der Alten und neue, published in Nuremberg in 1768' (cf. Marigliani p. 219). Sandrart carved this plan together with Johannes Meyer; the result is a far more refained work compared to that of Falda, carved by Lhuiler. Etching, with margins, in excellent condition. Rare. Veduta della serie Romanorum fontinalia … pubblicata a Norimberga nel 1685, da J. Von Sandrart. Le tavole furono incise da Hans Ulrich Franck, Suzanne Marie von Sandrart e Johannes Mayer riproducendo i rami del Falda, ma animando con personaggi e particolari fiamminghi le notissime vedute romane. Le tavole sono in controparte rispetto alle vedute del Falda, con didascalie bilingue in tedesco e latino. Acquaforte, in ottimo stato di conservazione. After Giovanni Battista Falda. Tratta dalla celebre "Academia Todesca della Architectura, Scultura & Pittura: oder Theutsche Academie" monumentale opera riccamente illustrata da centinaia di incisioni raffiguranti antichità, architettura e mitologia classica, edita a Norimberga e Francoforte tra il 1675 ed il 1680. La serie dei Palazzi di Roma deriva dalle incisioni realizzata da Giovan Battista Falda per l'architetto Pietro Ferrerio. Incisa in rame da J. Franck, pieni margini, in ottimo stato di conservazione. Engraving from "Academia Todesca of Architecture, Sculpture & Painting: oder Theutsche Academie", great work illustrated by hundreds of engravings depicting antiquity, architecture and classic mythology, edited in Nuremberg and Frankfurt between 1675 and 1680. The series of "Palazzi di Roma" comes from the engravings realized by Giovan Battista Falda for the architect Pietro Ferrerio. Engraving in copper by J. Franck, full margins, in excellent condition.
