Due uomini a cavallo in un paesaggio, 1656
Acquaforte misure: mm 307 x 267 Incisore e disegnatore, si dedicò sporadicamente alla pittura. Il padre Francesco, scultore allievo di Giambologna, morì prematuramente ma riuscì ad avviare tutti i suoi figli a mestieri d’arte. Stefano fu il solo ad eccellere, ebbe i primi insegnamenti presso botteghe di dimenticati orefici i quali ebbero tuttavia il pregio di fargli prender dimestichezza con il bulino. Fu sostanzialmente un autodidatta. Le fonti bibliografiche affermano che egli si esercitava a disegnare figure curiosamente partendo dai piedi e a copiare le incisioni di Jacques Callot avendo come unico confronto l'incisore Remigio Cantagallina. Fu notato poi dal pittore Giovan Battista Vanni che lo prese nella sua bottega e gli diede i primi insegnamenti di pittura e del disegno. La vocazione di Della Bella fu sicuramente l'incisione e già le sue prime opere rivelano i temi a lui più cari: scene di vita contemporanea, feste, battaglie e le decorazioni. Lo studio delle incisioni e dei disegno di maestri antichi, la conoscenza e il confronto con i maestri fiorentini e fiamminghi a lui contemporanei allora presenti alla corte medicea furono furono di grande stimolo. Egli è considerato un grafico puro, grazie ai suoi numerosi viaggi tra Roma e Parigi e grazie alla protezione dei Medici maturò un proprio linguaggio grafico, in vita e per tutto il XVIII secolo fu ricercato e collezionato in Francia e in Italia . In questa stampa, tratta dalla serie Vedute di Roma e della campagna circostante composta da sei tavole, protagonisti sono il paesaggio e gli uomini a cavallo. Il primo piano è dominato da un maestoso albero di quercia, con grosse radici che escono dal terreno, con fronde ricche di foglie alcune illuminate dai raggi del sole, altre in ombra. La composizione è molto ben architettata, e appena lo sguardo si distacca dall'albero vediamo due figure a cavallo che cavalcano dal centro verso sinistra. Sono due uomini distinti, indossano un cappello e i loro corpi sono avvolti in un mantello. Entrambi hanno lo sguardo rivolto verso il basso, osservano le pecore che sembrano fuggire dal sentiero lungo il quale procedono. Un cane pastore abbaia al primo cavallo e sembra stia per dirigersi verso una contadina e un pastore che guidano questa transumanza. Alle loro spalle si apre allo sguardo un paesaggio collinare, ricco di piante e vegetazione, si intravede una casa e la stalla degli animali. Tutto è descritto mediante forti contrasti chiaroscurali, che si affievoliscono dolcemente verso il cielo sullo sfondo tracciato mediante linee parallele. Nel margine inferiore, oltre l'immagine a sinistra, a puntasecca "SD (intrecciate) Bella In & F. cum Pri. Reg. christ." Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Minimi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Stato II/II, i due spazi bianchi verticali nel cielo a sinistra presenti nel I stato a causa di una cattiva morsura sono stati riempiti e si affievolisce la linea di fuga verticale che parte dal capello del primo cavaliere. Un disegno preparatorio per la stampa è conservato agli Uffizi 368 P. Filigrana: "GGLAUDET". Bibliografia: De Vesme-Massar 836, pag. 129.

A destra, sulla terrazza del grande giardino di Villa Medici a Roma si vede un antico e maestoso vaso decorato con un bassorilievo che rappresenta il sacrificio di Ifigenia (oggi il vaso è nella Galleria di Firenze). A sinistra del vaso, è raffigurato un giovane ragazzo seduto a terra, di profilo a destra, con il volto incorniciato da morbidi capelli che scendono sulle spalle e con lo sguardo fisso verso il vaso. Si tratta di Cosimo III de Medici avvolto in un abito riccamente panneggiato intento a disegnare su un taccuino il vaso. Sullo sfondo viene descritto, attraverso un tratteggio più morbido, che conferisce un atmosfera argentea, il giardino ricco di molte varietà di alberi quali cipressi che si stagliano verso il cielo, statue, arbusti e una donna che passeggia sulla sinistra. In basso, al centro iscritto in lastra "Romae in Hortis Medicaeis Vas Marmoreum Eximium", a destra "SD (sovrapposti) Bella MDCLVI". Molti storici ritenevano che il ragazzo rappresentato fosse l'artista stesso, invece adesso si pensa che sia Cosimo III allora principe ereditario di Toscana. Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi e tratto deciso su carta vergellata color avorio. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Buoni margini oltre la battuta del rame benché irregolari. Stato: II/III con il monogramma e la data modificata. Filigrana: “testa coronata di profilo” (Lieure, 21, Ortolani, 3). Bibliografia: De Vesme-Massar 832, pag. 128.

Copia in controparte dalla serie Paesaggi e rovine di Roma (DeVesme/Massar, 819-831), come descritto da De Vesme e Massar a pagina 128. Le lastre di queste copie appartengono alla Calcografia di Roma della quale si vede il marchio a secco all'angolo in basso a sinistra del frontespizio (Lugt 2144). Condizioni perfette.
