‎Muntz Charles E.‎

‎Diodorus Siculus and the World of the Late Roman Republic‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj, pp.310. offers a fresh look at one of the most neglected historians of the ancient world and recovers Diodorus originality and importance as a witness to one of the most tumultuous periods in antiquity. Muntz analyzes the first three books of Diodorus, which cover barbarian ethnography, myth, and early history and contain the most varied and eclectic material in his work. He shows how Diodorus defines the physical, political, and cultural boundaries of the late Roman Republic in these books and uses them to map out future possibilities for the Romans. Diodorus reveals through the history, myths, and customs of the barbarians the secrets of successful states and rulers, and contributes to the debates surrounding the transition from Republic to Empire. Muntz establishes just how linked the barbarians of the Bibliotheke are to the crumbling Republic and demonstrates that through the medium of the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Indians, and others Diodorus engages with major issues and intellectual disputes of his time, including the origins of civilization, the propriety of ruler-cult, the benefits of monarchy, and the relationship of myth and history. Diodorus has many similarities with other authors writing on these topics, including Cicero, Lucretius, Varro, Sallust, and Livy. But, as Muntz argues, engaging with such controversial issues, even indirectly, could be dangerous for a Greek provincial such as Diodorus, and he may never have completed or fully published his bilbiotheke in his lifetime.‎

‎Colour and Meaning in Ancient Rome‎

‎8vo, hardcover in dj, 8.78 by .79 inches. (282 pages) Explores the definition and function of colour in Rome during the early Empire using a wide variety of contemporary sources.Explores how ancient Romans categorised, organised and described colours, and outlines the principal differences and similarities between ancient and modern concepts of colour. By drawing together evidence from contemporary philosophers, elegists, epic writers, historians and satirists, Bradley explores the definition and function of colour in Rome during the early Empire.Explores how ancient Romans categorised, organised and described colours, and outlines the principal differences and similarities between ancient and modern concepts of colour. By drawing together evidence from contemporary philosophers, elegists, epic writers, historians and satirists, Bradley explores the definition and function of colour in Rome during the early Empire. The study of colour has become familiar territory in recent anthropology, linguistics, art history and archaeology. Classicists, however, have traditionally subordinated the study of colour to form. By drawing together evidence from contemporary philosophers, elegists, epic writers, historians and satirists, Mark Bradley reinstates colour as an essential informative unit for the classification and evaluation of the Roman world. He also demonstrates that the questions of what colour was and how it functioned - as well as how it could be misused and misunderstood - were topics of intellectual debate in early imperial Rome. Suggesting strategies for interpreting Roman expressions of colour in Latin texts, Dr Bradley offers new approaches to understanding the relationship between perception and knowledge in Roman elite thought. In doing so, he highlights the fundamental role that colour performed in the realms of communication and information, and its intellectual contribution to contemporary discussions of society, politics and morality.Introduction, 1. The rainbow, 2. Lucretius and the philosophy of color, 3. Pliny the Elder and the unnatural history of color, 4. Color and rhetoric, 5. The natural body, 6. The unnatural body, 7. Purple, Conclusion: colours triumphant, Envoi: Aulus Gellius, Attic Nights 2.26. BiographicalNote: Mark Bradley is Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of a number of articles in the field of Roman visual culture, and has also worked on aspects of ancient approaches to pollution and cleanliness, as well as the reception of classical antiquity during the British Empire.‎

‎Mayor Adrienne‎

‎The Poison King: The Life and Legend of Mithradates, Rome's Deadliest Enemy (ISBN:0691126836)‎

‎8vo, cloth in dj, pp. xx-450, 8 color plates. 74 halftones. 4 tables. 9 maps. . Machiavelli praised his military genius. European royalty sought out his secret elixir against poison. His life inspired Mozart's first opera, while for centuries poets and playwrights recited bloody, romantic tales of his victories, defeats, intrigues, concubines, and mysterious death. But until now no modern historian has recounted the full story of Mithradates, the ruthless king and visionary rebel who challenged the power of Rome in the first century BC. In this richly illustrated book - the first biography of Mithradates in fifty years - Adrienne Mayor combines a storyteller's gifts with the most recent archaeological and scientific discoveries to tell the tale of Mithradates as it has never been told before. "The Poison King" describes a life brimming with spectacle and excitement. Claiming Alexander the Great and Darius of Persia as ancestors, Mithradates inherited a wealthy Black Sea kingdom at age fourteen after his mother poisoned his father. He fled into exile and returned in triumph to become a ruler of superb intelligence and fierce ambition. Hailed as a savior by his followers and feared as a second Hannibal by his enemies, he envisioned a grand Eastern empire to rival Rome. After massacring eighty thousand Roman citizens in 88 BC, he seized Greece and modern-day Turkey. Fighting some of the most spectacular battles in ancient history, he dragged Rome into a long round of wars and threatened to invade Italy itself. His uncanny ability to elude capture and surge back after devastating losses unnerved the Romans, while his mastery of poisons allowed him to foil assassination attempts and eliminate rivals. "The Poison King" is a gripping account of one of Rome's most relentless but least understood foes.‎

‎Between Rome and Carthage‎

‎8vo. (404 pages) Explores the relations of the Italian cities with Rome and Carthage during the Second Punic War.The great Carthaginian general, Hannibal, invaded Italy during the Second Punic War (218-201 BC) with the hope of raising widespread rebellions among Rome's subordinate allies in the south. He was partly successful, but did not win over enough Italian cities to defeat Rome. Understanding their motivations reveals much, not just about the war itself, i1. Introduction, 2. Apulia, 3. ‎Una Moglie‎

‎16mo 11x18 p.93 brossura editoriale.

‎Ancient Graffiti in Context‎

‎8vo, 229 x 152 mm. 240pp. Graffiti are very common within the ancient world, but remain underexploited as a form of archaeological or historical evidence. This volume interrogates this cultural phenomenon and by doing so brings it into the mainstream of ancient history and archaeology. Focusing on different approaches to and interpretations of graffiti from a variety of sites and chronological contexts, Baird and Taylor pose a series of questions not previously asked of this evidence, such as: What is graffiti, and how can we interpret it? What ways, and with whom, do graffiti communicate? To what extent does graffiti represent or subvert the cultural values of the society in which it occurs? By comparing themes across time and space in the ancient world, the authors are able to define and contextualize graffiti, and provide a series of interpretative strategies for scholars and students of the ancient world.Ancient graffiti range from texts and images written or drawn both inside and outside buildings, in public and private places, to those on monuments in the city and on mountains in the countryside; what unites them conceptually is that they can be seen as actively engaging with their environment in a variety of ways. This book explores these engagements and demonstrates how differences of scale and spatial dynamics can be negotiated, and as such will be essential reading for Classical archaeologists and historians alike‎
