Light-hearted Booth Tarkingtonesque novel about a teenage Everygirl one Jane Jones who we meet "in the throes of adolescence" and subsequently "struggle through her great crushes and follow her ambitions to become alternately a poet a peeress and an actress." Ryerson 1892-1965 came to the movies in the mid-1920s after having already established herself as a journalist and writer of short fiction; she often wrote in collaboration with Clements her second husband to whom she was married from 1927 until his death in 1948. They co-authored numerous plays including three that made it to Broadway in the 1940s and several mystery novels and Ryerson herself had quite a decent string of movie credits including as one of the three credited screenwriters on THE WIZARD OF OZ. This was actually the second novel the duo had written about young Jane and her best pal C following "This Awful Age" published in 1930. A proposed film version of "Mild Oats" was rumored in early 1934 and although it never came to pass the earlier book did finally make it to the screen in 1941 as HER FIRST BEAU but not without having first been repurposed as a stage play called "June Mad." . Her contributions were numerous including the creation of the multi-roles of actor Frank Morgan who played the Wizard and Ryerson's invented character Mr. Marvel. She also focused the story almost entirely on Dorothy's desire to return home and the Wicked Witch's desire to possess the Ruby Red Slippers. It was her script that introduced the blatant "There's No Place like Home" motif to the film: In order to return to Kansas Dorothy must click the Ruby Red Slippers together and say three times; "There's No Place Like Home". It was also her idea that Dorothy first melted the Wicked Witch by accident because the witch was attempting to set fire to the Scarecrow an idea that preserved Dorothy's purity of motive.<br/><br/> unknown books

Hardcover. a good sound copy with only light shelfwear large library label on front pastedown see Notes; the jacket has a bit of paper loss at the spine ends which has been filled in by internal paper-tape reinforcement as have a diagonal tear and a small narrow chip at the bottom of the front panel and another bit at the top rear flap-fold. B&W photo frontispiece INSCRIBED and SIGNED by co-writer Ryerson on the front endpaper to a fellow writer Alice D.G. Miller: "For Alice / with gratitude / and affection / Florence / November 1948." As blurbed on the front of the jacket the play a battle-of-the-sexes comedy set in 1896 San Francisco about a couple who agree to disagree on an important issue women's suffrage had a successful 7-month run on Broadway 229 performances January-July 1948. In addition to the inscription the material on the facing page the front pastedown fills in the story a bit more: first there is the inscribee's ownership signature her full name at the top of the page and there is also a large illustrated bookplate headed Motion Picture Relief Fund Inc. and stating that "This book has been donated to the Motion Picture Country House by Alice D.G. Miller." Miller 1894-1985 was a prominent movie scenarist during the 1920s with a few more scattered credits in the early talkie years; Ryerson 1892-1965 was more prolific who had dozens of screenwriting credits from the mid-1920s to the mid-1940s including a shared credit on THE WIZARD OF OZ and often wrote in collaboration with Clements her second husband. Their joint output included not only screenplays but also mystery novels and stage plays. Beyond documenting a simple friendship though the two women collaborated on at least one stage play a 1950 comedy called "Little Scandal" a copy of which can also be procured from ReadInk if you are interested and so inclined. Florence Rena Sabin 1871-1953 born in the mining town of Central City Colorado as the daughter of an engineer Florence Rena Sabin was raised in New England and carved out a career of firsts in developmental biology and anatomy. Receiving a bachelor's degree from Smith College in 1893 Sabin entered the three year old medical school at Johns Hopkins University in 1896 becoming the first woman graduate from the school with the class of 1900. At Hopkins Sabin became the protégé of Franklin P. Mall who encouraged her research interests in anatomy. By any reckoning her talent for medical investigation was enormous earning her an internship at Hopkins Hospital followed by a special fellowship in the Department of Anatomy from the Baltimore Association for the Advancement of University Education of Women. By 1917 Sabin was made a member of the faculty in the Department of Histology the first woman at the University to be promoted to the status of full professor. Her early research centered on the embryological origins of the lymphatic system and she later worked on the origins of blood blood cells and blood vessels on the histology of the brain and on the pathology and immunology of tuberculosis. In September 1925 Sabin accepted the invitation to head the Department of Cellular Studies at the Rockefeller Institute becoming the first woman faculty member there and continuing her work on tuberculosis. She retired to Colorado in 1938 but emerged six years later at the request of the governor to chair a subcommittee on public health and help reform and modernize the state's public health system. She retired a second time in 1951 and died October 3 1953. Honors accrued to Sabin throughout her career including a number of firsts. In addition to being the first female graduate of Hopkins medical school the first full professor there and the first at Rockefeller she was the first president of the American Association of Anatomists 1 and the first woman member of the National Academy of Sciences 195. She was selected as one of two representatives for the state of Colorado in the National Statuary Hall in the U.S. Capitol. unknown

Very good in custom archival mylar cover.</p><p><strong>FLORENCE RENA SABIN </strong>1871 – 1953 was a pioneer for women in science; she was the first woman to hold a full professorship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine the first woman elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the first woman to head a department at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research. In 1896 Sabin enrolled at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as one of fourteen women in her class. The school opened in 1893 and was co-ed from the beginning because of an early donor's contingency which required the admittance of female students. while at Hopkins Sabin's observational skills and perseverance in the laboratory caught anatomist Franklin P. Mall's attention. Mall's mentorship was foundational to her future research and consequent legacy. Upon graduation Sabin obtained an internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital under physician Sir William Osler. She was finally appointed professor of embryology and histology in June 1917 the first woman to become a full professor at a medical college. She continued her research on the origins of blood vessels which in 1924 Sabin's earned her presidency of the American Association of Anatomists. In 1925 she was voted into the National Academy of Sciences. She was the first woman to gain membership in this prestigious body and would remain the lone female member for the next 20 years.</p><p><strong>FRANKLIN PAINE MALL </strong>1862-1917 earned his MD from the University of Michigan in 1883. After completing his degree Mall moved to Heidelberg to study ophthalmology. However in 1884 he moved to Leipzig where he became a student of embryologist Wilhelm His and met William H. Welch future dean of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In 1886 Mall enrolled in a fellowship in the department of pathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital where he started a collaboration with William S. Halsted. In 1889 Mall was offered an adjunct professorship of anatomy at Clark University in Worchester Mass. where he developed an embryological research program. With the opening of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1893 William Welch appointed Mall head of the department of anatomy. At Johns Hopkins Mall worked with Ross G. Harrison Florence R. Sabin George L. Streeter and Warren H. Lewis. Mall edited the first six volumes of the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Contributions to Embryology. In 1913 Mall had appealed to the Carnegie Institution to create a department of embryology that would be housed at Johns Hopkins. He received a $15000 grant that established the department which Mall chaired until his death in 1917.</p><p><strong>PROVENANCE: SIDNEY P. SWARTZ </strong>1896-1977 earned his MD from Columbia University where he later served as professor of cardiology.
