Spine cloth lightly rubbed and slightly faded. Inside the book is very clean and tidy. The Golliwogg began as a toy character and was later widely made into dolls and other merchandise. It originated in Florence K. Upton's 1895 children's book The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwogg and then spread into popular culture as a children's soft toy. 220 x 285 mm 8¾ by 11¼ inches. . Nouvelle édition 1903. Poèmes de Bertha Upton. Reliure cartonnée illustrée de l'éditeur avec dos en toile rouge. 64 pages plus des illustrations en couleur pleine page de Florence K. Upton. Les plats sont un peu salis mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. Le tissu du dos est légèrement frotté et un peu décoloré. L'intérieur est très propre et soigné. Le Golliwogg était à l'origine un personnage de jouet puis a été largement décliné en poupées et autres produits dérivés. Il tire son origine du livre pour enfants de Florence K. Follow the adventures of Golliwogg and his old companions a group of Dutch peg dolls as they pedal their handcrafted bicycles across the globe. Their journey takes them through the streets of Paris beneath the iron arches of the Eiffel Tower and onward to Japan where they discover the thrill of riding in a rickshaw. The trip continues through Turkey across vast desert sands on camel back until a dramatic encounter with a tribe of cannibals brings their expedition to a most unexpected halt. Original hardback boards with green cloth spine. There is a touch of darkening to the boards and bumping to the corners but still an attractive copy. Gift inscription in pencil to the inside front board. The title page is moderately darkened. The rest of the book is clean with a few finger marks to some pages. There are a couple of very small closed tears to the edges not affecting text. Lovely full page and vignette illustrations. Curiously the copyright notice and date are printed on each full page illustration. 63 pages. 215 by 280mm 8½ by 11 inches. . Première édition. Un bel exemplaire de cette première édition rare. Suivez les aventures de Golliwogg et de ses vieux compagnons une bande de poupées à tige hollandaises alors qu'ils parcourent le monde à vélo sur leurs vélos fabriqués à la main. Leur périple les mène dans les rues de Paris sous les arches de fer de la Tour Eiffel puis au Japon où ils découvrent le plaisir de se faire conduire en pousse-pousse. Le voyage se poursuit à travers la Turquie à dos de chameau à travers les vastes étendues désertiques jusqu'à ce qu'une rencontre dramatique avec une tribu de cannibales mette un terme inattendu à leur expédition. Couverture rigide d'origine avec dos en toile verte. Les plats présentent un léger noircissement et les coins sont un peu abîmés mais l'exemplaire reste très attrayant. Dédicace au crayon sur la page de garde intérieure. La page de titre est modérément jaunie. Le reste du livre est en bon état avec quelques traces de doigts sur certaines pages. On note deux très petites déchirures fermées sur les bords qui n'affectent pas le texte. De ravissantes illustrations en pleine page et vignettes. Her Golliwogg is a friendly and courageous character although some later iterations were not.<br /> <br /> This is the story of the round the world travels of Golliwogg and his "old time friends" the Dutch peg dolls on their home made bicycles. Oblong 11 By 9 Inches. 63 pp. Full color plate illustrations not quite every other page with text illustrations interspersed in margins of comic verse. One of the best of the politically dubious relics of late nineteenth century children's literature. It is hard to say whether the infectious humor of the illustrations or of the fluent inspired doggerel almost certainly emulated by the likes of Roald Dahl is the bigger draw. Probably the rarest of the highly desirable Golliwogg series this one taking our characters to Paris Japan and Africa. This copy has considerable soilage on the boards which are illustrated paper pasted onto the boards. Shelfwear along edges and corners. Original spine band survives with some wear by tips and rubbing along gutters. Interior tight. Some scattered soilage to pages but text and especially the illustrations remain attractive. Catalogue of an Exhibition of American Paintings Furniture Silver and Other Objects of Art MDCXXV - MDCCCXXV. 160 pp. Both volumes were owned by Ernest R. Rolph 1871-1958 the well known Toronto architect of Hart House Emmanuel College The Royal York and many other buildings. His name is found as a black ink stamp on both volumes just below the title box. The 2 volumes were presented to the artist/sculptor Robert Norgate 1920 - 1956 on Oct. 27 1947. Presentations to be found on the front pastedowns employing the same black ink stamp framed by calligraphic script presumably by Rolph. Both volumes carry gilt script on the black spines and blue front panels. Both volumes are scuffed with worn extremities and are lightly soiled. Both are tight and square. Combined weight is over 6 lb. resulting in extra shipping costs if shipped outside of Canada. A Toronto cultural artifact - a gift from well known architect to sculptor/poet.
