An exceptional photo album documenting the Obsidian Club Summer Camp climbs of North Sister and the South Sister in the Willamette National Forest in August 1942 and August 1945 including 44 photographs.

Contemporary lim suede calf post-binder painted illust. of Native American Chief & headdress wigwams on front cover Vancouver Canada punch sewn at gutter margin w/ black silk braid minor shelfwear rubbing VG exemplar. This mountaineering album offers a detailed visual record of the Obsidian Club Camp Outings during World War II opening with their summer camp Aug. 2-16 1942 at Linnton Meadows at the base of Husband peak east of Husband Lake with splendid views of Middle Sister South Sister and the Husband. The many photos show the Husband hiking near the Lake followed by climbs of the North and South Sister peaks including several images of the climbing parties trekking across the glaciers and passes. This outing also included visits by Forrest Morgan Ray Engles and Supervisor Bruckart of the Willamette National Forest with Engles making his first major climb on the North Sister. The second part includes photos for the 1945 Outing held at Obsidian Camp and featured climbs of the North Sister Middle and South Sisters as well as the Husband and Little Borthers and several views of the Linnton Meadows Lake campsite. Also included is a the souvenir photo invitation from the Obsidians announcing the Summer Camp Reunion Sept. 22 1945 urging members to bring their photos and stories. Florence Sims became the Obsidian Club’s first woman president in the Fall of 1942. The Obsidian Club was originally founded after two students were lost in the Three Sisters in 1927 and it was determined their needed to be a local mountaineering and rescue group. First Burt edition of one of the author’s scarce “Kenya novels†a romance mystery fiction developed and popularized together with fellow authors including Nora St. John Beale Nora Strange & Eslpeth Hxley published originally as Valley of Suspicion Bles 1930. This sub-genre surrounded the social milieu of British Empire proponents and upper class in the Kenya Colony between the War with decided tinges of anti-semitism and unapologetic racism. Riddell d. 1960 was a popular romance mystery and adventure novelist whose works included Dream Island Perilous Love Kismet in Kenya and others whose life experiences included working as a governess teacher matron of a board house manager of a boarding school and author. . Not at AAS. OCLC locates issues from 1846 at only two libraries: LOC and Lib. Co. of Phila with the later the only institution listing this July 14 extra.<br /> <br /> Provenance: Copy of H.B. Chew Towsontown Md. Henry Banning Chew 1800 - 1866 was one of thirteen founding members of the Philomathean Society the University of Pennsylvania's first student organization. He went on to become a successful merchant. He married the daughter of Governor Charles Ridgely of Hampton Maryland. In 1921 the Chew family sold the land from his mansion to Goucher College. The Florence claimed to be the "Society Hotel of Southern California; as well as the largest hotel in San Diego with extensive ocean views. A contemporary note on verso records a visit in 1886. F. Bookseller's ticket of William George's Sons of Bristol and recent bookplate of F. W. Morris to FEP amorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox to front blank fly-leaf scattered foxing. The second known copy of the sole edition of a record of the proceedings of a trial relating to the rights of inheritance to the fortune of Florence Smyth of Ashton Court Somerset. Smyth died in 1852 'at the age of about 83 years' leaving property valued at £30300 the majority of which to be left to Charles Hardcastle Abbott the executor. This was contested by Mrs. Upton mother to Smyth's three grandchildren to whom little provision was made. The court found in favour of Abbott concluding that Upton's allegations of nefarious conduct employed to extract an inheritance from Smyth were unfounded. OCLC records a single copy Yale. . Two Irishwomen disgusted with London weather undertook a trip through Connemara" Cork Constitution 21st November 1892. With illustrations by W. W. Russell worked up not wholly to her approval from Somerville's original sketches. Crown 8vo 20cm. viii200 32pp advertisements dated January 1893. Full page illustrations. Original green cloth pictorially blocked to Somerville's design on spine and upper cover in blue ochre and black and lettered on upper cover and spine in gilt; black endpapers; just a touch of wear; front endpaper strained; a few mild flaws but overall a very good copy. Contemporary presentation inscription on behalf of the Oxford Gardens Girls' School Swimming Club to Constance Cave - first prize for for "swimming on back" - presumably Constance Cave 1884-1919 daughter of a London jeweller.</p> London : W.
