No that's not a crease at lower right - that's a bit of flippancy in Scribner's Holiday Issue cover design. A Strong Very Good or a bit more with even a virtually complete spine albeit end-tweaked -see scan. something of a rarity in that regard. See scans. Contents extraordinarily clean and bright. The original issue in wraps - not from the hardbound aggregations - of the August1880 issue which contains Ellen E. Dickinson's article "The Book of Mormon" "manuscript found" dealing with the claim of the daughter of Reverend Solomon Spaulding that her father had in fact written a work based on his actual experiences it is claimed at mounds he excavated near Conneaut Ohio in 1812 which was subsequently usurped by Joseph Smith for the creation of the Book of Mormon. Fascinating reading and the writing has a ring of authenticity to it un-hyped and oddly down-to-earth direct and sincere and simple for the language of the day - though I am certainly no expert on the subject. Other topics in this issue of the always thoroughly illustrated Scribner's Monthly - almost all thoroughly illustrated with engravings - are: About England with Charles Dickens Fra Girolamo Savonarola The French Republic Canada Whippoorwills the Grandissimes Peter the Great Curiosities of Advertising American Diplomacy Rivers superb engravings and the etchings of Seymour Haden. Supplemental section has an interesting piece with charts on horology: 'Extract from the Judges in Horology' from the 1879-1880 Sydney International Exhibition' with three charts which compare the performance of top watchmakers of the time. Two Volumes in One small folio in 6's fine 19th century morocco gilt ruled with gilt inner edges and decorated spine on 5 cords "bound by F. Bedford" Francis Bedford 1799-1883 All Edges Gilt. Marbled end-papers 16pp 240pp with pagination continuous 2pp Contents added leaf at end London 1809 printed for R. Tiphook giving List of Portraits and Places from whence taken. As in some library copies e.g. those at Cambridge two leaves of prelims Post-Praefatio & Admonitio ad Lectorem are here lacking possibly to suppress controversial comments in their Latin text. Otherwise this copy is complete with 240pp including brilliant impressions of all 64 portraits as listed in the Table and 3 other engravings including the tomb of Queen Elizabeth I which with 3 of the portraits are plates outside the collation. Pages slightly browned but all clean and crisp throughout. Light pencil notes on end-paper and at end explaining origin of the extra final leaf. Finely bound copy of this splendid 1620 publication as described in the DNB article on Henry Holland whose "reputation as a bookseller was chiefly made by the issue of two elaborately illustrated antiquarian works . his second and more famous illustrated publication appeared in 1620 in two folio volumes the first dedicated to James I and the second to the universities of Cambridge and Oxford. Holland's letterpress is in Latin throughout . The work opens with a portrait of Henry VIII and closes with one of Thomas Holland d. 1612. There are sixty-five portraits in all and two engravings of monuments of Prince Henry and Queen Elizabeth respectively. In one copy in the British Museum there is inserted an old manuscript list of the pictures whence the engravings were made. This was printed in 1809 for insertion in other copies" as here present at the end. STC 13582 and A.M. Hind Engraving in England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries vol ii 145-62.
