sp; - London - Faulter; and Egerton9.5by 7; xviii24832pp. 1795 Book. Hardcover. A beautiful illustrated tour of the upper Avon by the somewhat notorious Samuel Ireland. Ireland 1744-1800 was a writer and engraver who is best remembered for his initially unwitting involvement in the Ireland Shakespeare Forgeries so named for the principal perpetrator his son William. It is unfortunate that this fatefulblemish overshadows his reputation insofar as his concerted dailyefforts led tothe publication ofhis celebrated'Picturesque Views' series. These editions were illustrated with engravings based on drawings done on site and contextualised with descriptive text detailing Ireland's progress through the area in question. Here we have a lovely rebacked edition of Picturesque Views on the Upper Avon retaining the original diced calf boards and collated complete with 32 illustrations including frontispiece and map. Condition: Externally rebacked in calf using old diced calf boards. Sound with slight rubbing. Lovely patina with corniced borders and contrasting label. Some wear to extremities and rubbing to boards. Internally hinges slightly strained but firm. Firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with only some handling marks and marginal browning and light foxing to preliminaries protective sheet has taken the brunt of the damage for the frontispiece plate. Lovely marbled endpapers with tidemarks and binder's stamp Whitehead of Coventry to top edges. Overall: VERY GOOD. sp; - London - Faulter; and Egerton9.5by 7; (xviii)248[32]pp. hardcover
