‎GALIBERT Leon, PELLE Clemente‎

‎L'Inghilterra. Tomo primo (-quinto). Traduzione di A. F. Falconetti adorna di incisioni‎

‎5 voll. in 8, pp. 486; 560; 471 + (1); 256 con 34 tavole f.t. incise all'acquaforte.

‎General Sir J.G. Maxwell Commander-in-Chief in Ireland during the 1916 Easter Rising. Autograph Letter Signed to 'Mr. Peverley Dodd' with regard to the etiquette for an engagement in Malta by the Duke of Connaught.‎

‎‘The Palace / Malta / March 24.’ 1908 On letterhead of the High Commissioner Mediterranean. The context of the letter is explained in Maxwell’s entry in the Oxford DNB: ‘In the autumn of 1902 Maxwell was chosen by the duke of Connaught then acting commander-in-chief in Ireland as his chief staff officer at Dublin. There he remained until May 1904 when Connaught became inspector-general of the forces and Maxwell followed him to London. At the end of 1907 Connaught was transferred to Malta as commander-in-chief and chief commissioner in the Mediterranean; Maxwell promoted major-general at the end of 1906 once more accompanied him and served with him until September 1908.’ The recipient was either the army chaplain Rev. H. will be in Review order Blue but with forage cap white cover; then H. E. will no doubt order what dress others wear.’ ‘The Palace / Malta / March 24.’ [1908] On letterhead of the High Commissioner, Mediterranean. unknown‎

‎George I, King of Great Britain and Ireland and Elector of Hanover‎

‎.Nurses Medicines and other necessary Contingencys for the use of the Rebell Prisoners." -
An original 15 June 1716 warrant signed by King George I during the first year of his reign authorizing reimbursement of funds spent for care of rebel prisoners captured during the Jacobite rebellion that challenged his enthronement‎

‎St. James's Palace London 1716. Document. This original 15 June 1716 document signed by Britain’s King George I authorizes reimbursement for care given to prisoners in the wake of the Jacobite rising of 1715 which asserted the right of the Stuarts to the throne over the Hanoverians of which King George I was the first.

The document is a single sheet of laid watermarked paper measuring 15.75 x 12.75 inches folded to form four 7.875 x 12.75 inches panels. The first panel features the King’s order prominently signed by him “George R” at the head of the document. The document is further signed at the foot “By His Majesty’s Command” by “Wm Pulteney” the future 1st Earl of Bath who was then serving as Secretary of War. The document is addressed at the lower left to “Henry Earl of Lincoln Pay Master Generall of Our Guards Garrisons & Land Forces in Great Britain and Forces abroad.” The document orders the Earl of Lincoln to “Pay unto John Mulcaster Agent and Sollicitor for transacting the Affairs of the Rebell Prisons the sum of Six hundred Ninety Two Pounds Three Shillings and Five Pence… to be paid over to Lt. Col. Solomon Rapin in satisfaction of the like Summ disburs’d by him in Nurses Medicines and other necessary Contingencys for the use of the Rebell Prisoners at the several Places they are kept from the 14th of Nov. 1715 to the 30th of Aprill 1716.” The inconclusive Battle of Sheriffmuir had taken place on 13 November 1715. The document was executed “at Our Court at St. James’s this 15. Day of June 1716. In the Second Year of Our Reign.”

The document bears three horizontal folds ostensibly where it was folded and sealed for original transmittal to Henry Earl of Lincoln. On the second panel is written the name “John Mulcaster”. The first and second sections of the upper fourth panel were obviously from the soiling and writing thereon the outer folded portions of the document when it was transmitted. Horizontally on the second section of the upper fourth panel is written: “Warrant for. 692.3.5. to Mr. John Mulcaster in satisfaction of the like Summ Disburs’d by Lt. Col. Sol. Rapin in Nurses Medicines sec. for the Rebell Prisoners from 14th. Nov. 1715. To 30th. Aprill 1716.” all above the date “June 16th. 1716”.

Condition is very good overall. The document is all but complete with only fractional loss to the lower right corner two tiny holes at the intersection of vertical and horizontal folds and a short closed tear and minor associated loss at the upper right corner of the rear panel. The document shows light overall soiling and spotting the soiling heavy only on the upper rear panel which served as the outer faces when the document was originally folded for transmittal.

The future King George I was born Georg Ludwig in Hanover perhaps not an obvious route to the British throne. However “the death in July 1700 of the duke of Gloucester reopened the question of the English succession… That successor had to be a Protestant—no Roman Catholic would have been considered—and of Stuart descent a combination which automatically excluded over fifty claimants with a closer hereditary claim.” The person who united these qualifications was Georg’s mother Sophia 1630-1714 youngest daughter of Frederick V of the Palatinate Winter King of Bohemia and of Elizabeth daughter of James I of England.

When he signed this document King George I 1660–1727 had only recently assumed the throne of Great Britain and Ireland ten months earlier in August 1715. The Jacobite cause pressed unsuccessfully upon his enthronement would be pressed with rebellious force of arms again in 1745 also to no avail. The Hanoverian period was remarkably stable not least because of the longevity of its monarchs. “From 1714 through to 1901 there were only six monarchs one of whom George III remains the longest reigning king in British History. Queen Victoria then surpassed her grandfather in both age and length of reign. The period was also one of political stability and the development of constitutional monarchy.”

Sources: ODNB; royal.uk

unknown‎

‎George Wyndham, Statesman and man of letters, at the time of this letter Chief Secretary fo Ireland (see DNB).:‎

‎George Wyndham Statesman; Chief Secretary fo Ireland Draft Autograph Letter probably incomplete lacking signature page to "St John". WITH related material.‎

‎Private / Draft / 25 Oct. 1904". Wyndham Statesman and man of letters at the time of this letter Chief Secretary fo Ireland see DNB. Three pages 4to good condition draft with much working over. He appreciates being given detailed grounds for a proposal that Sir Anthony Macdonnell MacDonnell Antony Patrick Baron MacDonnell statesman of Irish origin currently working with Wyndham in Ireland might be made available in the Indian Council a matter of urgency. He explains at length his high opinion of Macdonnell energy ability distinction etc. and his reluctance to part with him. "He is truly remarkable for his administrative capacity: indefatigable quick loyal to me and his chief and impartial in his attaitude towards all creeds and classes." But he has been attacked continuously mor than any public servant except Milner - "without foundation justification or even excuse" though he does speculate why. His service in India are knowledge are discussed. He then discusses Macdonnell current status and remebers that he had persuaded "Sir Anthony to embark on what is always a thankless task." "There is I admit another side to my last argument. When Sir Anthony came here - before the final controversy had absorbed all political interest before the persitent depression of public credit rendered almost all legislation impossible - I entertained & imparted to him the hope that we might follow up the Land Act with other Irish reforms. But most reforms - especially of the Poor Law of primary & secondary education of the Labourers Act etc - demand time from Parliament & credit. So that I now feel I persuaded him to come here under false pretences . . . . ." Note: This draft letter reflects the difficulties Macdonnell encountered when nudging through some form of devolution. Wyndham is revealing of his thought processes as he struggles through re-working to express himself. See entries in DNB for Wyndham and Macdonnell's activities in Ireland at this time. WITH: four-page incomplete"Private" letter from Lord Curzon italic typing with manuscript words in gaps or additions/corrections 24 Oct. 1904 discussing the situation of Macdonnell with relation to the India Council - appointed to do a job not go on indefinite leave. He explains their need for him and his intention originally to press for his release from Ireland. But he now sees his requirement as "a golden bridge" taking Macdonnell out of a difficult situation. "I do not for a moment suggest that all or a hundredth part of what is attributed to Macdonnell is true. But you know Ireland so well that the fact it is believed by all Unionists certainly invalidates the authority of the Governemnt . . ." He suggest that Wyndham write Macdonnell a diplomatic letter. In fact Macdonnell opted to stay in Ireland where the DNB claims he did good work. Macdonnell was praised for his role as Curzon's deputy in India before he went to Ireland. AND: Copy letter signed "St John Brodrick" = Secretary of State for India to George Wyndham with printed heading "Chief Secretary's Lodge Phoenix park Dublin" but also in manuscript "India Office 24 Oct. 1904". This is the letter to which Wyndham's draft above responds. Private / Draft / 25 Oct. 1904". unknown‎
