VALCK Gerard (1651 - 1726)
Regnum Scotiae… Magnae Britanniae..
An attractive but rather strangely contorted map of the mainland and islands, with the Orkneys delineated in an inset panel. Very detailed but designed on a projection constricting the north-south axis. Gerard and Leonard Valk are best known as republishers of earlier mapmakers' plates. However, here their own work shows precision in engraving with a wealth of placenames.Copperplate, full original colouring, good condition.

VICTORIA 1819 1901 Queen of Great Britain and Ireland 1837 1901 and Empress of India 1877 1901
A collection of five autograph letters signed by Queen Victoria 'VR' to Miss Sarah Anne Hildyard governess to the royal children and a confidante of the Queen
Small octavo 23 pages in total with four letters on mourning stationery three with the very heavy black border Victoria adopted after the death of Prince Albert; on letterheads of Windsor Castle two letters Osborne two letters and Balmoral; 1853 to 1879. Sarah Anne Hildyard was appointed as governess to the older Royal children in January 1847. 'Nicknamed Tilla the new governess was chosen by Baron Stockmar and . Vicky was fortunate in the Baron's choice. Miss Hildyard the daughter of a clergyman was intelligent well-read and a stimulating teacher' Pakula: 'An Uncommon Woman' 1995. These extraordinary letters are intimate and revealing the Queen writing with a depth of feeling that could only be expressed towards someone who had shared the raising of her children and the death of her beloved Prince Albert. The first four are addressed to Miss Hildyard at St James's Palace; the last one is addressed to St Katharine's Regent's Park. 1 Osborne 18 July 1853. There is an outbreak of measles 'and the two poor girls Alice and Victoria or at least Vicky has had them most severely of the family. In your faithful & judicious hands we know how safe they are. I am thankful to say my beloved Prince is recovering most rapidly and satisfactorily . I cannot report as well of myself. I am still suffering from a severe billious sic derangement. With our affectionate loves to the girls & thanks for their nice letters'. 2 Windsor Castle 26 November 1857. 'On this day you will I am sure not refuse the request if I ask you to grant to the Prcss Royal Victoria to whom you have been a 2nd mother. It is that you should let Miss Severn the artist Ann Mary Newton make a slight sketch of you - as she has done of Mama. I will take no refusal as the poor child is so very anxious about it.' 3 Windsor Castle 28 February 1865. 'I was alas! so hurried yesterday & so far more still today during the few sad dreary hours I passed in that most lonely & painful to me of all my ruined Houses that I cld not say all I wished or indeed half of it to you - but I doubt I cld have said it; I therefore write these few lines . Let me again & again thank you in my own darling precious Husband's name as well as in mine for your great devotion to our dear Children for some eighteen years & for all you have done for our 5 girls -: They all love you dearly & will ever feel what they owe to you! I must try & do all I can for these dear Children - & be father & mother to them while I am still alive. May God help me the responsibility is fearful & I so often sink under it & feel very unworthy to guide His Children. But God will not forsake "the widow & the fatherless" & will help me in my fearful task. I know what He wished.' 4 Balmoral 7 September 1876. A letter of condolence from the Queen 'a few lines to express my deep concern and heartfelt sympathy on the recent serious loss you have sustained. Life is a great struggle & were it not for the blessed Assurance of another & a better World it would often be difficult to go on the weary road more & more bereft of those dear Helps & comforts which God gave us for a time.' 5 Osborne 4 January 1879 written shortly after the death of Queen Victoria's second daughter Alice on 14 December 1878. 'I long ago wished to write to you to thank you for your kind feeling letter. Oh! Dear Miss Hildyard I thought of you - who knew what a sweet gentle & yet noble almost heroic character that darling Child was . & whose life was one of such a true Christian - when this heavy blow came; again on the dreadful day - when I so well remember you coming & asking to kiss His dear hand not yet cold! Mysterious it was then that that life should be taken - & now again as mysterious - that that dear valuable life should be taken - which was as necessary to her Hesse her husband Louis IV Grand Duke of Hesse - as His was to mine!!'
