‎Unpaginated 4 pp. pamphlet announcing and serving as an invitation to the First International Conference of Revolutionary Surrealists held in Brussels in October 1947. 8vo. Original self-wrpps. some minor toning sunning especially along edges. Brussels Groupe Surréaliste-Révolutionnaire en Belgique 1947. When the Surrealist movement began in the 1920s the works produced by its members both written and visual were best known for their elements of surprise unexpected combinations or pairings and illogical representations. Surrealist leader André Breton asserted that Surrealism was meant to be a revolutionary movement. The Revolutionary Surrealists formed two decades later as an offshoot of Surrealism in an attempt to revitalize the original movement. In 1947 they organized the First International Conference of Revolutionary Surrealism in Brussels and this pamphlet served as the invitation. Written in French the text is formed as a letter from the Revolutionary Surrealists inviting like-minded thinkers to attend. Part of the text reads ".le surréalisme de Breton se présente à nous aujourd'hui qu'il va jusqu'à 'élaborer des mythes' et collaborer au 'Figaro littéraire' comme un acquis sous un monceau de détritus. .La conférence affirmera la nécessité révolutionnairede l'expérimentation surréaliste: il y a une pensée révolutionnaire non politique il n'y a pas de théorie révolutionnaire sans expérimentation révolutionnaire."<br/>As of January 2021 OCLC locates four copies of this pamphlet in North American institutions. unknown books‎

‎Breendonk: Amicale des Postiers Prisonniers Politiques Rescapés 1945. Original broadside pictorial diploma 24.5x32cm. printed lithograph on cream stock in red gilt and black accomplished in manuscript and rubberstamp. Minor foxing else a fresh Fine example. Exceedingly uncommon diploma awarded to a survivor of the Nazi prison camp at Fort Breendonk outside Antwerp. The camp generally held political prisoners members of the Resistance and Jews who were almost all subsequently dispersed to the larger concentration camp across Eastern Europe. More than 3000 prisoners passed through Breendonk of whom approximately ten percent died or were executed within its walls while half perished following deportation to other camps. The present certificate awarded to a member of the French resistance a mechanic outside Saumur in the Maine-et-Loire department of Western France his arrest part of a massive purge following the assassination of a Dr. Ritter representative of Gauleiter Sauckel in France see Colonel Remy "La Résistance en Anjou Touraine et Orléanais" 1975 Vol. 1 p. 103. The entire town of Saumur was later awarded the Croix de Guerre for its role in the resistance. <br/><br/>Certificate margins adorned with poignant vignettes of camp life men in striped uniforms awaiting execution working in the mines or caught in barbed wire fence. In the case of Huberdeau his first name here spelled "Villiam" he was awarded this diploma for "sa déportation dans le bagnes nazis" "his deportation to the nazi camps". Though no mention is explicitly made to Breendonk it appears that the award was given to survivors of that camp specifically. Redouté' in the lower left corner of the frame****. - Loose in olive-grey folded carboard of the period with ink-title at frontpanel (as quoted above) and another similar title in pencil at inner rear-panel (perhaps by Redouté himself): ''Dessin / des Roses / 168 Dessin au Trait / Collection des Dessins originaux / de L'ouvrage des Roses pour l'Edition en-4°- / 168 Dessins au Trait''; Folio (ca. 32,5 x 24,5 cm).‎

‎*** CHARMING COLLECTION OF REDOUTÉ'S LINE-DRAWINGS FOR THE SECOND EDITION OF HIS OPUS MAGNUM 'LES ROSES', CONTAINING 18 (of ?) SHEETS APPARENTLY EXECUTED BY THE MASTER HIMSELF. - *) As we had no access yet to an Octavo-set (it was printed from 1824-1826) the roses/plates have been identified according to the digitalized Library-of-Congress-copy of the first Edition, 1817-1824. **) 2 of the 3 watermarked sheets carry the additional imprint 'Turkey Mill'; ***) one of them only shows the upper half of the year which looks like 1824, although the upper part of the '4' looks very similar to the upper part of '1', yet the stroke from top-right downwards to the left is longer and not complete (as in '1') and therefore probably of a '4'. ****) Unsigned are the sheet/rose which we could not identify acc. to L.o.C.-copy and 'Rosa gallica (55)' as stated above. --- Very few sheets slightly-but-shallow spotty, mainly in the outer margin, few sheets - mainly the larger ones slightly to somewhat frayed at lower or right edge. OVERALL AN IMPRESSIVE AND CERTAINLY UNIQUE SET.‎
