Further Correspondence with the United States Ambassador respecting the Treatment of British Prisoners of War and Interned Civilians in Germany In continuation of "Miscellaneous No. 26 1916": Cd.8297. Miscellaneous No. 7 1917
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1917. Presumed first edition/first printing. Wraps. Good. 2 29 pages. Occasional footnotes. Ink notation on first page. Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty. March 1917. Cd. 8477. From Wikipedia: The situation of World War I prisoners of war in Germany is an aspect of the conflict little covered by historical research. However the number of soldiers imprisoned reached a little over seven million for all the belligerents of whom around 2400000 were held by Germany. Starting in 1915 the German authorities put in place a system of camps nearly three hundred in all and did not hesitate to resort to denutrition punishments and psychological mobbing; incarceration was also combined with methodical exploitation of the prisoners. However the captivity organized by the German military authorities also contributed to creating exchanges among peoples and led a number of prisoners to reflect on their involvement in the war and relation with their homeland. Soldiers were not the only ones made prisoner during the war; civilian populations were also impacted. Historian Annette Becker has extensively studied this aspect of the war. After the invasion the German Army started by taking hostages first of all the towns' leading citizens. Several invaded countries were affected by civilian deportations: France Belgium Romania Russia etc. 100000 were deported from France and Belgium. From 1914 both male and female civilians aged 14 and over from the occupied zones were forced to work quite often on projects related to the war effort such as the rebuilding of infrastructure destroyed by fighting roads rail tracks etc. In short order the civilians began to be deported to forced labor camps. There they formed the Zivilarbeiter-Bataillone civilian workers' battalions and wore a distinctive mark: a red armband. Becker indicates that their living conditions resembled those of the prisoners - that is they were harsh. The hostages were sent to camps in Prussia or Lithuania and some of them remained prisoners until 1918. Like the military prisoners civilians were subject to exchanges and a bureau for the repatriation of civilian detainees was created at Bern in 1916. At the end of the war civilian prisoners formed an association the Union nationale des prisonniers civils de guerre. His Majesty's Stationery Office paperback

Instruction in Military Engineering Volume I. PartI. Field Defences
Majesty's 1888. Fourth Edition stated. Hardcover. Fair. COver has wear soilng bumped corners and tears to cloth. Somewhat shaken. vii 1 136 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams maps. Errata slip present! Some illustrations have color. LIV plates. This reflects the state of the art knowledge and practice in the mid to late Victorian period. From Wikipedia: "Military engineering is loosely defined as the art and practice of designing and building military works and maintaining lines of military transport and communications. This discipline of engineering is regarded as the oldest form of engineering and is also the precursor of the civil engineering discipline. While both of these disciplines of engineering are responsible for building the same types of projects their environments differ. Military engineers construct and maintain facilities that serve military servicemen on war-fronts. Military engineers are also responsible for logistics behind military tactics. Modern military engineering requires more than civil engineering techniques. In the 21st Century military engineering also includes other engineering disciplines such as mechanical and electrical engineering techniques. According to NATO "Military Engineering is that engineer activity undertaken regardless of component or service to shape the physical operating environment. ' Military Engineering incorporates support to manoeuvre and to the force as a whole including military engineering functions such as engineer support to Force Protection Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Environmental Protection Engineer Intelligence and Military Search. Military Engineering does not encompass the activities undertaken by those 'engineers' who maintain repair and operate vehicles vessels aircraft weapon systems and equipment." Majesty's hardcover

Narrative of the Battle of Jutland
London: His Majesty's Stationery Office 1924. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. iv 121 3 pages Footnotes. Many fold-out maps some with color--45 diagrams listed . List of Ships Sunk. Appendix published by request of Lord Jellicoe. Index. Endpapers discolored. Cover has some wear and soiling. Corners rubbed. The official narrative of what became a very controversial battle with different factions fighting over its contents and interpretations. The Battle of Jutland was a naval battle fought between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet under Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer during the First World War. The battle unfolded in extensive maneuvering and three main engagements the battlecruiser action the fleet action and the night action from 31 May to 1 June 1916 off the North Sea coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula. It was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in that war. Jutland was the last major battle in world history fought primarily by battleships The official British Admiralty examination of the Grand Fleet's performance recognized two main problems: British armor-piercing shells exploded outside the German armor rather than penetrating and exploding within. As a result some German ships with only 8 in 20 cm-thick armor survived hits from 15-inch 38 cm projectiles. Had these shells penetrated the armor and then exploded German losses would probably have been far greater. Communication between ships and the British commander-in-chief were comparatively poor. For most of the battle Jellicoe had no idea where the German ships were even though British ships were in contact. They failed to report enemy positions contrary to the Grand Fleet's Battle Plan. Some of the most important signaling was carried out solely by flag instead of wireless or using redundant methods to ensure communications-a questionable procedure given the mixture of haze and smoke that obscured the battlefield.
