‎Exemplaire de toute rareté d'une des premières publications consacrées aux tentatives françaises de colonisation du Brésil et précieuse source, en partie unique, dinformations ethnographiques et géographiques. A lorée du 16ème siècle, les Français mènent plusieurs tentatives de colonisation en Amérique, avec des succès au Nord (fondation de la Nouvelle France par Samuel Champlain), et quelques installations avortées au Sud. Claude d'Abbeville, né à Abbeville, est un missionnaire capucin qui participe, en 1612, à la tentative de colonisation française de la France équinoxiale au Brésil (Saint Louis de Maragnan, située dans lembouchure de la rivière Mearim). L'éphémère colonie s'implante avec le soutien de la reine régente Marie de Médicis qui nomme les Sieurs de La Ravardière et de Razilly « Lieutenants du Roi de France en l'île de Maragnan» et envoie des missionnaires Capucins pour exercer leur apostolat auprès des tribus tupinambas. De cette expérience coloniale est issu un corpus d'écrits composé de lettres apologétiques envoyées du Brésil par les Capucins et surtout de deux importants récits. Le premier est le présent ouvrage publié en 1614, récit complet du voyage à Maranhão de son auteur, le père Claude d'Abbeville, jusqu'à son retour en France accompagné du Sieur de Razilly et de six ambassadeurs tupinambas. La publication de ce livre, dans une édition luxueuse, ainsi que les cérémonies solennelles et l'impression des gravures représentant les ambassadeurs visaient à encourager de nouveaux commanditaires et à préparer une possible émigration vers la colonie brésilienne. Il sagit ainsi en partie dun ouvrage de « propagande » comparable à celui de Marc Lescarbot (Histoire de la Nouvelle France, 1609) publié dans le but dencourager des français à tenter l'aventure. La situation n'est plus la même un an plus tard : en 1615, quand le capucin Yves d'Évreux fait publier le second ouvrage intitulé « Suite de l'Histoire des choses mémorables advenues en Maragnan, des années 1613 & 1614 [] ». Ce dernier n'a cependant jamais été connu du public, car le tirage a été détruit dans les ateliers de l'imprimeur François Huby. Néanmoins, François de Razilly réussit à sauver un seul exemplaire du livre, hélas endommagé. Le fait nous est raconté dans une lettre qu'il fait imprimer et relier soigneusement avec le récit, et qu'il offre au roi Louis XIII en 1617. Conscient des intérêts politiques qui menaçaient de compromettre l'entreprise coloniale, Razilly y révèle les circonstances qui ont conduit la « faction espagnole », qui soutenait le projet de mariage du jeune Louis XIII avec l'infante Anne d'Autriche, à exercer des pressions pour que les Français quittent le Maranhão. C'est pour ces raisons que la couronne de France renonce à soutenir davantage sa colonie brésilienne, démantelée en novembre 1615 par les forces portugaises. En France, la dimension politique et religieuse du projet missionnaire du Maranhão trouve sa meilleure expression lors de la réception des ambassadeurs tupinambas à Paris, en 1613-1614. Toujours accompagnés de Claude d'Abbeville et du Sieur de Razilly, les deux ambassadeurs sont menés au Louvre afin de rendre hommage au roi de France et de soumettre « leur terre & leurs personnes à son sceptre», le reconnaissant comme «leur Roy & Souverain Monarque de leur païs » (pp.340-341). Le présent ouvrage de Claude d'Abbeville est publié à deux reprises au début de l'année 1614, dans ce contexte d'euphorie lié, d'une part, à la présence des Tupinambas à Paris, de l'autre, à l'urgence du départ d'une deuxième compagnie vers le Maranhão, pour pourvoir aux besoins matériels et humains de la France Équinoxiale. La présente édition est publiée immédiatement après la première, imprimée à la hâte à son retour quelques mois plus tôt et rapidement épuisée. Sortis des mêmes presses, les deux tirages ne diffèrent que par quelques différences typographiques mineures (fautes de la premier corrigées entrainant la suppression de lerrata et index amplifié, passant de 27 à 35 pp.) Depuis la parution, en 1551, du livret signalant la participation d'une cinquantaine de « sauvages » à la fête brésilienne organisée pour l'Entrée Royale d'Henri II à Rouen, toute une série de documents attestent la présence de « brésiliens » en France. C'est aussi à Rouen, en 1562, que Montaigne rencontre les trois Brésiliens présentés au roi Charles IX, qui leur « parla à eux long temps », et auxquels on « fit voir nostre façon, nostre pompe, la forme d'une belle ville » (Essais, Livre I, chapitre XXI). En 1566, à Bordeaux, un autre défilé avec des Indiens du Brésil avait été organisé en hommage à Charles IX. La propagande monarchique qui inspire les cérémonies parisiennes de 1614 suit de près les principes apostoliques modernes chers aux capucins. D'une part, les missions constituent un temps fort du progrès du sentiment divin habitant virtuellement tout homme. De l'autre, la dévotion collective participe du processus politique d'émergence d'une communauté catholique universelle, qui embrasserait ainsi l'île des Tupinambas aussi bien que le royaume de France. Louvrage de Claude dAbbeville débute par un très beau frontispice finement gravé figurant des scènes de dévotion et dhistoire religieuse. Le récit de D'Abbeville offre la première description imprimée de Maranhao (Sabin), et « nous donne des informations précieuses concernant la religion et l'astronomie des Tupis, qui ne se trouvent dans aucun autre écrit (Borba de Moraes) ». Une gravure placée en regard de la p. 90 représente lérection dune croix sur le rivage par les membres de lexpédition : « La croix estant plantée, comme il est dit, lIsle fut aussi beniste, pendant que du fort et de nos vaisseaux on tiroit force canonades en signe de rejouissance ». DAbbeville nous livre en outre de larges descriptions des coutumes, des lois et de la vie sociale de ces insulaires chasseurs-cueilleurs : « Cest un peuple à la vérité qui ne veut être conduit par la rigueur, ainsi seulement par la douceur et par la raison. Ils sont fort ingenieux et industrieux pour faire tout ce quils ont de besoin, soit par la chasse, soit pour la pesche, soit pour la guerre. Ils ont mille façons jolies pour enjoliver et embellir leurs arcs, leurs flèches, leurs ornements de plumes, et pour faire tous leurs outils et ce dont ils se servent ordinairement. » (p.316). La dernière partie du livre contient le récit du voyage en France des six indiens Tupinamba. Malheureusement, ces sud-américains contractent des maladies européennes et trois d'entre eux périssent avant de pouvoir être « correctement honorés ». Le récit de ce périple peu banal pour lépoque est illustré de gravures représentant ces insulaires, avec leur nom gravé en haut : François Carypyra, Jacques Patoua et Anthoine Manen représentés dans leurs tenues traditionnelles, vêtu dun pagne de feuilles, avec arcs et flèches. Le corps du premier est entièrement couvert dun tatouage à motif géométrique. Suivent Louis Marie, Louis Henri et Louis de Saint Jehan quant à eux en habits dapparats européens avec fraises, des chapeaux à plumes et des fleurs en main. Autant que l'efficacité de la propagande de l'uvre missionnaire capucine, c'est l'image de l'indien bon, disposé à se convertir, qui est ici diffusée. Dans ces récits et images qui participent d'une occidentalisation plus générale, les indiens sont « décontextualisés », abstraits de ce qu'on peut appeler « la coutume indigène ». Ainsi s'exprime Claude d'Abbeville lors de son arrivée en France : « [...] nous estions avides de faire voir aux François les fruits de nostre Mission & comme les premières greffes de nostre nouvelle Colonie » (p.334). Tels des « greffes » de la nouvelle France, les Tupinambas sont détachés de la « réalité sauvage » et servent le spectacle de la conversion à la religion et à la civilisation des français. Nul ne se doutait, alors, que le Maranhão ne serait jamais français. Ni que Saint-Louis survivrait malgré tout sur ces terres équinoxiales, dans des corps métis. [A noter que deux estampes ont été imprimées avant la parution du récit de Claude d'Abbeville et divulguées à Paris. Elles montraient les Tupinambas en spectacle exotique et édifiant, intégrés à l'ordre monarchique et catholique des cérémonies solennelles. La première de ces estampes est une gravure sur cuivre, diffusée vers avril et juin 1613, sur laquelle six sauvages sont représentés, trois de face et trois de dos. Ils semblent exécuter une danse, des hochets à la main. Deux d'entre eux portent sur la tête des plumages qui leur tombent au long du dos et le reste de leur costume est français (la fraise, le justaucorps, les culottes bouffantes, les bas roulés, les souliers lacés et la croix en pendentif). La seconde gravure, réalisée cette même année 1613 et vendue à « Paris, chez Michel de Malebourse à la rue Monorgueil », représente la scène du Baptême des trois Tupinambas dans l'église des Capucins. Cette fois, trois Indiens catéchumènes sont à genoux devant le Roi, en présence des capucins, de la Régente et des représentants de la Cour. Trois strophes versifiées, placées sous l'image, évoquent l'ordre monarchique et catholique dans lequel s'inscrit la présence des « étrangers » à la Cour française, venus « s'instruire en la religion » et rendre hommage au Roi.] Le présent ouvrage est considéré comme une véritable rareté : les historiens Alfred Métraux et Jacques Lafaye, dans leur introduction à la réédition du présent ouvrage en 1963, ne notent que 10 exemplaires encore existants : « il ne reste plus actuellement qu'une dizaine d'exemplaires au monde de l'édition originale, celle de l'imprimerie de François Huby à Paris. » Dès 1878, Leclerc qualifie cette édition aussi importante que rare : « ouvrage aussi important que rare ». Nos recherches nont révélé quun seul exemplaire complet passé en vente ces 45 dernières années (Sotheby's, New York, 12 novembre 2017, lot 21). Bel exemplaire conservé dans sa reliure dorigine non restaurée. 1 vol. 12mo (167 x 110 mm) of : [8] ff. (Small marginal stains and foxing, a few leaves foxed by oxidation of the paper, worm work in the margins, overall quite fresh and nice print of the engravings). Full contemporary vellum, edgewires through the headpieces, trace of laces, spine titled in brown ink, edges speckled. A very rare copy of one of the first publications devoted to French attempts to colonize Brazil and a valuable source, in part unique, of ethnographic and geographic information. At the beginning of the 16th century, the French made several attempts to colonize America, with successes in the North (founding of New France by Samuel Champlain), and a few abortive settlements in the South. Claude d'Abbeville, born in Abbeville, was a Capuchin missionary who participated in the 1612 French attempt to colonize equinoctial France in Brazil (Saint Louis de Maragnan, located at the mouth of the Mearim River). The short-lived colony was established with the support of Queen Regent Marie de Médicis, who appointed the Sieurs de La Ravardière and de Razilly "Lieutenants of the King of France in the island of Maragnan" (translated from French) and sent Capuchin missionaries to exercise their apostolate among the Tupinambas tribes. From this colonial experience came a body of writings composed of apologetic letters sent from Brazil by the Capuchins and especially of two important accounts. The first is the present work published in 1614, a complete account of the journey to Maranhão of its author, Father Claude d'Abbeville, until his return to France accompanied by the Sieur de Razilly and six Tupinambas ambassadors. The publication of this book, in a luxurious edition, as well as the solemn ceremonies and the printing of the engravings representing the ambassadors aimed to encourage new sponsors and to prepare a possible emigration to the Brazilian colony. It is thus partly a work of "propaganda" comparable to that of Marc Lescarbot (Histoire de la Nouvelle France, 1609) published with the aim of encouraging French people to try the adventure. The situation was not the same a year later, in 1615, when the Capuchin Yves d'Évreux published a second work entitled "Suite de l'Histoire des choses mémorables advenues en Maragnan, des années 1613 & 1614 [...]". However, the latter was never made public, because the print run was destroyed in the workshops of the printer François Huby. Nevertheless, François de Razilly managed to save a single copy of the book, alas damaged. The story is told in a letter that he had printed and bound carefully with the story, and that he offered to King Louis XIII in 1617. Aware of the political interests that threatened to compromise the colonial enterprise, Razilly reveals the circumstances that led the "Spanish faction", which supported the project of marriage of the young Louis XIII with the Infanta Anne of Austria, to exert pressure so that the French would leave the Maranhão. It was for these reasons that the French crown renounced further support for its Brazilian colony, which was dismantled in November 1615 by Portuguese forces. In France, the political and religious dimension of the missionary project of Maranhão found its best expression during the reception of the Tupinambas ambassadors in Paris, in 1613-1614. Always accompanied by Claude d'Abbeville and the Sieur de Razilly, the two ambassadors were taken to the Louvre to pay homage to the king of France and to submit "their land and their persons to his scepter", recognizing him as "their King and Sovereign Monarch of their country" (translated from French, pp.340-341). The present work by Claude d'Abbeville was published twice at the beginning of 1614, in a context of euphoria linked, on the one hand, to the presence of the Tupinambas in Paris, and on the other hand, to the urgency of the departure of a second company to Maranhão, to provide for the material and human needs of Equinoxial France. The present edition is published immediately after the first one, printed in a hurry on his return a few months earlier and quickly sold out. Coming out of the same presses, the two editions differ only by some minor typographical differences (errors of the first one corrected leading to the suppression of the errata and index amplified, passing from 27 to 35 pp.) Since the publication, in 1551, of the booklet reporting the participation of about fifty "savages" in the Brazilian festival organized for the Royal Entry of Henri II in Rouen, a whole series of documents attest to the presence of "Brazilians" in France. It is also in Rouen, in 1562, that Montaigne met the three Brazilians presented to King Charles IX, who "spoke to them for a long time", and to whom they "showed our way, our pomp, the shape of a beautiful city" (translated from French: Essais, Book I, chapter XXI). In 1566, in Bordeaux, another parade with Indians of Brazil had been organized in homage to Charles IX. The monarchical propaganda that inspired the Parisian ceremonies of 1614 closely followed the modern apostolic principles dear to the Capuchins. On the one hand, the missions constitute a strong time of progress of the divine feeling inhabiting virtually every man. On the other hand, collective devotion participates in the political process of the emergence of a universal Catholic community, which would thus embrace the island of Tupinambas as well as the kingdom of France. Claude d'Abbeville's work begins with a beautiful and finely engraved frontispiece depicting scenes of devotion and religious history. D'Abbeville's account offers the first printed description of Maranhao (Sabin), and "gives us valuable information concerning the religion and astronomy of the Tupis, which is not found in any other writing (Borba de Moraes) (translated from French). An engraving placed opposite of p.90 represents the erection of a cross on the shore by the members of the expedition: "The cross being planted, as it is said, the island was also blessed, while from the fort and from our ships one fired force canonades as a sign of rejoicing (translated from French). D'Abbeville also provides us with extensive descriptions of the customs, laws and social life of these hunter-gatherer islanders: "It is a people that does not want to be led by rigor, but only by gentleness and reason. They are very ingenious and industrious to do everything they need, either by hunting, or for fishing, or for war. They have a thousand pretty ways to embellish and beautify their bows, their arrows, their feather ornaments, and to make all their tools and what they usually use. " (translated from French, p.316). The last part of the book contains the story of the journey to France of the six Tupinamba Indians. Unfortunately, these South Americans contracted European diseases and three of them perished before they could be "properly honored" (translated from French). The account of this unusual journey for the time is illustrated with engravings of these islanders, with their names engraved at the top: François Carypyra, Jacques Patoua and Anthoine Manen represented in their traditional clothes, dressed in a leafy loincloth, with bows and arrows. The body of the first is entirely covered with a tattoo with a geometric pattern. Louis Marie, Louis Henri and Louis de Saint Jehan follow in European dress with feathered hats and flowers in hand. As much as the effectiveness of the propaganda of the Capuchin missionary work, it is the image of the good Indian, ready to convert, that is spread here. In these stories and images, which are part of a more general westernization, the Indians are "decontextualized", abstracted from what can be called "indigenous custom". This is how Claude d'Abbeville expressed himself upon his arrival in France: "[...] we were eager to show the French the fruits of our Mission & as the first grafts of our new Colony" (translated from French, p.334). Like "grafts" of the new France, the Tupinambas are detached from the "savage reality" and serve the spectacle of the conversion to the religion and to the civilization of the French. Nobody suspected, then, that Maranhão would never be French. Nor that Saint Louis would survive in spite of everything on these equinoctial lands, in mixed race bodies. [Note that two plates were printed before the publication of Claude d'Abbeville's account and divulged in Paris. They showed the Tupinambas in an exotic and edifying spectacle, integrated into the monarchical and Catholic order of the solemn ceremonies. The first of these prints is a copperplate engraving, circulated around April and June 1613, in which six savages are represented, three from the front and three from the back. They appear to be performing a dance with rattles in their hands. Two of them wear feathers on their heads that fall down their backs and the rest of their costume is French (the justaucorps, the bloomers, the rolled stockings, the laced shoes and the cross in pendant). The second engraving, made in the same year 1613 and sold in "Paris, chez Michel de Malebourse à la rue Monorgueil", represents the scene of the Baptism of the three Tupinambas in the Capuchin church. This time, three Indian catechumens are kneeling before the King, in the presence of the Capuchins, the Regent and the representatives of the Court. Three versified stanzas, placed under the image, evoke the monarchic and Catholic order in which the presence of the "foreigners" at the French Court, who had come to "learn in religion" and pay homage to the King, was inscribed]. The present work is considered a true rarity: the historians Alfred Métraux and Jacques Lafaye, in their introduction to the republication of the present work in 1963, note only 10 copies still in existence: "there are only about ten copies left in the world of the original edition, that of the printing house of François Huby in Paris." (translated from French). As early as 1878, Leclerc describes this edition as important as it is rare: "work as important as it is rare" (translated from French). Our research has revealed only one complete copy that has come up for sale in the last 45 years (Sotheby's, New York, 12 November 2017, lot 21). A fine copy preserved in its original unrestored binding.‎
