‎Royal 1939 Visit to Canada Ashtray‎

‎Hamilton Ontario Canada : Sovereign Canada British Empire Made 1939. Presumed First issuance thus. Ceramic. Good. The format is approximately 5 inches in diameter with three depressions for cigarettes. The inner circle is approximately 3.5 inches in diameters and contains a colorful image of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with their names beneath their shared profiles. This is above banner that states Royal Visit to Canada above the date of May 1939. Above the profile is the royal crown which is flanked by two flags on either side. Gold color gilt at outer and inner circles with minor wear. The 1939 royal tour of Canada by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth took place from 17 May to 15 June covering every province in Canada. Taking place in the months leading up to the Second World War the tour was undertaken to strengthen trans-Atlantic support for the United Kingdom in anticipation of war while also showcasing Canada's status as an independent kingdom of the British Empire. The King and Queen arrived in Canada and traveled up the St. Lawrence River to Quebec City before heading west by rail. Accompanied by Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King they visited most major cities across Canada reaching as far west as Victoria British Columbia. On their return journey they traveled to the United States for a state visit and a meeting with President Roosevelt. The royal tour concluded with visits to the Maritimes after which they departed from Halifax in the then separate Dominion of Newfoundland. It was the first visit of a reigning monarch to Canada and also the first time a British monarch had set foot in the United States. The tour was an enormous event and a great success. An ashtray is a receptacle for ash from cigarettes cigars and other smokable products. Ashtrays typically are made of fire-retardant material such as glass heat-resistant plastic pottery metal or stone. It differs from a cigarette receptacle which is specifically for discarding cigarettes after being smoked. The most common ashtray design is a shallow cylinder with a flat base to rest on a table. Other ashtrays particularly in public places are wall-mounted and larger than standard tabletop ashtrays due to the increased use they receive. There are also public ashtrays combined with trashcans. Many ashtrays have notches at the rim to hold cigarettes and/or a cigar. Frequently ashtrays were equipped in older large or luxury cars before later being available as dealer-installed accessory items. <br /> There are ashtrays that have a cover to prevent odor from leaving the ashtray. It also prevents oxygen from flowing in so a cigarette will go out by itself even if it has not been completely extinguished by pushing into the surface. While simple primitive forms of ashtrays existed long before the 19th century it was during the start of the 20th century that the design aesthetics and their popularity really took off. As more women began to smoke in the early 1900s the ashtray went closer to an art form. Many women avoided the use of the traditional ashtray as it failed to reflect their feminine values through an activity that was long declared as being exclusive to men. What emerged were detailed often very fancy ashtrays. These ashtrays depicted pastoral scenes of maidens wandering through vibrantly colored landscapes. Some even featured very luxurious cast-iron models of women in fancy dresses animals in states of play and the occasional porcelain or ceramic tray highlighting extravagant floral arrangements. The word "ashtray" in unhyphenated form rather than "ash tray" or "ash-tray" did not come into common use until 1926. Sovereign Canada [British Empire Made] unknown‎
