Quebec: Hunter Rose & Co. 1865. Thomas Nicholson Gibbs 1821-1883 miller merchant manufacturer banker and politician who became closely aligned with Sir John A.Macdonald after Confederation was Oshawa’s chief businessman and financier. He used his connections with Sir John to obtain a loan from the Bank of Montreal to stave off the impending collapse of the St. Lawrence Bank in 1872 and became Macdonald’s confidant and ‘fixer’ on dealing with Toronto capitalists as well as during the Canadian Pacific Railway negotiations. Gibbs was known to be a corrupt politician winning elections by large-scale vote buying and patronage. In 1873 he briefly served as secretary of state for the provinces and superintendent of Indian affairs before moving to the Department of Inland Revenue but the Pacific Scandal and the defeat of Macdonald’s government on 6 Nov. 1873 ended his cabinet career.
