Carriers' Greeting to the Patrons of The Evening Globe Hagerstown Maryland. New Year 1915
Very good. 15 x 9 inches printed on thin white cardboard. Large halftone photo of the Globe's carrier at head with text in three columns underneath. Some light creasing one spot of damage about an inch from the bottom but very good overall. The left and right columns list the locations of fire alarm call boxes while the center is taken up by a poem by local author Isabel S. Mason. The poem praises Hagerstown's peace and prosperity and lacks the typical friendly plea to customers on behalf of the carriers. The carriers in the photograph are however identified by name at the lower left. Although carriers' addresses were published as late as the 1950s twentieth century examples are relatively scarce as are examples with photographic illustrations. Not recorded in OCLC. unknown

Carter was a self-described "reformed "drunkard dope fiend criminal leader and character in the underworld" who found religion in 1922 while incarcerated at the Arizona State Prison. Upon his release the same year he began conducting revivals in churches and prisons around the country. Dated March 27th 1865 at the Rooms of the Y.M.C.A. in Washington D.C. this document reads as follows: <br /> ____________<br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directress of said hospital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Otherwise in cases of special emergency their places are to be filled by others of our number all of whom are to be held in readiness to go to Annapolis upon notification by telegram or otherwise of such services being needed. <br /> <br /> signed Geo. It was the primary receiving point for Union soldiers wounded in the eastern theatres of the war as well as those being returned from Confederate prisons such as Libby and Andersonville. The former prisoners were in shockingly poor health due to the conditions in which they were held with many dying on the transports to Annapolis and those who survived needing much attention. Letter of Formation of Y.M.C.A. "Special Relief Corps" for Sick and Starved Soldiers at Annapolis
1865. Single sheet folded in half to 7 3/4" x 9 3/4. Fine condition with some mild browning light stains and two horizontal mailing folds. Original handwritten letter dated March 27 1865 from the "Rooms of the Y.M.C.A." in Washington DC. The letter organizes a "Special Relief Corps" of short term nurse volunteers standing ready to travel from Washington DC to Annapolis to assist in the care of soldiers in the U.S. General Hospital there. The text of the letter is as follows: <br /> <br /> "The undersigned hereby organize ourselves into a 'Special Relief Corps' to be held in readiness to send not exceeding three of our members at one time to help care for sick and starved soldiers at the U.S. General Hospital at Annapolis Maryland. We agree that our delegates shall remain at Annapolis working under the supervision of either the local manager of the U.S. Christian Commission stationed there or of the Directoress of said capital for a time not exceeding three days excepting as they may be able or willing voluntarily to remain longer. Manuscript Letter from James Henry Rikert to Celia Gibson.
<p>One folded sheet two pages of text illustrated red and blue lettersheet depicting George B. McClellan with slogan "WE HAVE BEAT OUR LAST RETREAT" includes matching postally canceled envelope. Minor folds one small hole at center fold not affecting text normal aging and toning. Overall in very good condition. James Rikert who enlisted in 1861 was discharged in 1862 for disability. He joined as a 21 year old private at Fort Wayne Michigan and mustered into Company G of the MI 5th Infantry. He sent this letter to Celia Gibson as a follow-up to a letter he sent a week earlier concerning their march on Manassas. He reports heavy rains that postponed the march but expects to march the next day. While he mentions his sadness at the loss of his grandmother he makes a point of telling Celia this could be his last letter. "This may be the last letter perhaps that you will ever get from me but if I live through the battle you will son hear from me again and if not you will know that I have gone to my lovely home and that I died as a Christian." Manuscript Letter from George H. Bostwick to his Brother Orramell T. Bostwick.
<p>Four pages on one leaf. Light folds text slightly faded on first page normal aging and browning minor wear at folds. Overall in very good condition. This letter offers a graphic account of the Battle of Liberty Mills. The Bostwick brothers both served in the 2nd New York Cavalry for most of the war. George 1836-1913 was a private and his brother Orramell 1840-1922 was a sergeant. After the war both brothers returned to their home town of Stillwater Saratoga County New York. George wrote this letter while his brother was recovering from wounds he received at Culpeper Court House on September 13th and updates him in great detail of the regiment's recent actions at Liberty Mills. In part "It was hand to hand part of the time. A. Laugholm shot a captain in neck he drop dead as a stone. I was hit with a sabre but it did not mont to eney thing. Better than average paper from this period. This issue of The Chicago Times includes an article that starts on the back page about the Naval Attack on Fort Fisher. The article indicates some mistakes were made by land forces. Perhaps more importantly there is a brief description of the role "the monitors" played in the battle. The little gunboats seemed to do well in this encounter. </p>

<p>Newspaper folded six columns 8 pp. Mostly uncut a few splits chips and tears at folds a couple of small pieces are missing from center column that goes through paper and results in some loss of text throughout creasing some foxing or darkening name stamp in top margin paper somewhat fragile and is folded. Overall condition fair or better for newsprint. This issue includes substantial Civil War coverage. Most of the front page is dedicated to the war including coverage of the Battle of Cedar Creek the war in Missouri the war in Tennessee and information about General Sherman's activities. An article "From the South" provides some additional war coverage on a subsequent page.</p>

"Cet ouvrage accompagne l'exposition présentée au musée du Louvre du 14 janvier au 16 avril 2012, puis à Bentonville et Atlanta. "Thomas Cole migre de l'Angleterre vers les Etats-Unis en 1819. Formé à l'Academy of Fine Arts de Philadelphie, il s'installe rapidement dans les Catskills, montagnes pittoresques au nord de New York. Autour de lui se forme une très importante génération de peintres paysagistes, regroupés sous le nom de Hudson River School. Egalement proche d'un cercle de poètes et d'écrivains, dont James Fennimore Cooper, ce mouvement a pour caractéristique la valorisation du spirituel dans la nature. "La Croix dans la contrée sauvage" fut peinte en 1845, représentation d'un Indien se recueillant sur une tombe au milieu d'une clairière avec les Catskills en perspective lointaine, vue à la fois puissante et mélancolique. Une inscription du peintre dans l'angle gauche du tableau renvoie à un poème de Dorothea Hermans, "The Cross in the wilderness". De la même époque date un texte dans lequel Thomas Cole expose sa conception théorique du paysage. La mort brutale du peintre en 1848 généra une exposition rétrospective la même année, exposition qui propulsa "La Croix dans la contrée sauvage" au rang de testament spirituel et pictural. Dès lors, le tableau eut une influence considérable sur la jeune école américaine de paysage."

"Cet ouvrage accompagne l'exposition présentée au musée du Louvre du 14 janvier au 16 avril 2012, puis à Bentonville et Atlanta. "Thomas Cole migre de l'Angleterre vers les Etats-Unis en 1819. Formé à l'Academy of Fine Arts de Philadelphie, il s'installe rapidement dans les Catskills, montagnes pittoresques au nord de New York. Autour de lui se forme une très importante génération de peintres paysagistes, regroupés sous le nom de Hudson River School. Egalement proche d'un cercle de poètes et d'écrivains, dont James Fennimore Cooper, ce mouvement a pour caractéristique la valorisation du spirituel dans la nature. "La Croix dans la contrée sauvage" fut peinte en 1845, représentation d'un Indien se recueillant sur une tombe au milieu d'une clairière avec les Catskills en perspective lointaine, vue à la fois puissante et mélancolique. Une inscription du peintre dans l'angle gauche du tableau renvoie à un poème de Dorothea Hermans, "The Cross in the wilderness". De la même époque date un texte dans lequel Thomas Cole expose sa conception théorique du paysage. La mort brutale du peintre en 1848 généra une exposition rétrospective la même année, exposition qui propulsa "La Croix dans la contrée sauvage" au rang de testament spirituel et pictural. Dès lors, le tableau eut une influence considérable sur la jeune école américaine de paysage."
