She was the youngest child of a popular novelist and the books show the casual wear and tear of a childhood gathering. Marya Manfred 1949-2022 grew up and attended elementary school in Bloomington Minnesota. With her parents she moved to Luverne at age 10 and graduated from Luverne High School on 1967. She later moved to Colorado for a year to study singing music composition and piano performance. She then finished her bachelor's degree majoring in Art at the University of Minnesota. She later worked for the Consumer Survivor Network at Marshall before becoming a Certified Peer Specialist at Southwestern Mental Health Center in Worthington and Luverne where she taught art therapy. Marya is survived by her sister the poet Freya Manfred and her husband the screenwriter Thomas Pope both of Stillwater Minnesota and two nephews Nicholas Bly Pope and Ethan Rowan Pope both of the Twin Cities. Also a 6-page corrected typescript of the copy used for the dust jacket also a setting copy but with no corrections by Manfred. Also page proofs for the same tall 8vo 129 leaves printed on rectos only with extensive annotations throughout by the editior and printer including the amending of a number of words and phrases in the text. William Lewis Manly 1820-1903 was an American pioneer of the mid-19th century. He was first a fur hunter a guide of Westward bound caravans a seeker of gold and then a farmer and writer in his later years. He wrote an autobiography first published with the title "From Vermont to California" then a second edition with the title "Death Valley in '49" which tells of the pioneer experience in America's Far West in particular the 1848 California Gold Rush. In December 1848 at age 29 Manly traversed California's Death Valley today the centerpiece of Death Valley National Park as a member of a group of emigrant pioneers traveling overland from Salt Lake City Utah to the California gold rush the Death Valley '49ers. These pioneers became lost in the Great Basin Desert and entered Death Valley having followed an inaccurate map for three weeks. Their food supplies were almost exhausted and the oxen pulling their wagons were dying of starvation. Manly with his associate John Haney Rogers trekked 250 miles on foot across the Mojave Desert to Rancho San Fernando near Los Angeles California to scout an evacuation route for the families trapped in Death Valley and procure food and horses if a settlement could be located. . The black-and-white map shows the boundaries of Illinois in outline presenting the Illinois River improved passage from Chicago to Grafton where it pours into the Mississippi River. It also shows the Rock River traversing to the Quad Cities. Toward the east is the Illinois & Michigan Canal the DesPlaines River the Little Calumet River and the Little Kankakee River and Calumet Harbor. The map is attributed to Thomas H. Handburg. The University of Illinois-Urbana has a photocopy of it from the photocopy in the National Archives. I have not identified to which Annual Report this belonged Nor can I find another map attribued to Thomas H. Handburg. unknown‎
