‎Handwritten letter to J. M. Dickinson Lisbon Ohio from Senator John Sherman‎

‎1892. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter dated Washington D.C. 21 Feb. 1892 from Senator John Sherman in reply to an inquiry from J. M. Dickinson Esq. New Lisbon Ohio about whether his son could get a position at the "Public Printer." John Sherman 1823-1900 represented Ohio in the U. S. Senate from 1861 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1897. From 1877 to 1881 he was Secretary of the Treasury and in 1897 and 1898 he was Secretary of State. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is named after him. General William Tecumseh Sherman was his brother. Using official Senate Chamber stationery and envelope the Senator tells Dickinson that there were not openings at the time but that he would inquire again later. J. M. John M. Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co. Ohio in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon Ohio through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon in 1907. In 1880 the House of Representatives received a petition from J. M. Dickinson mayor of New Lisbon the name was officially changed from New Lisbon to Lisbon in 1895 and others citizens of Columbiana Co. Ohio for a constitutional amendment granting the right of suffrage to women. Along one edge of the postmarked envelope presumably in Dickinson's hand: "John Sherman Feby 22 1892." In Near Fine Condition: letter has 2 horizontal folds and is clean and solid; envelope is slightly soiled. unknown‎

The binding is worn and stained. There is damping at the lower left corner of the front cover as well as a bit near the bottom edge of the rear cover. This does not seem to affect the interior of the book although the endpapers are browned. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Text is a bit toned but is clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf "To my valued Friend Mr. S. A. Manuel / From the Author / Isaac R. Sherwood of Ohio". There is also a pencil inscription on the front pastedown "George W. Thomas / Through courtesy Dr. Manual". Isaac Ruth Sherwood 1835-1925 was born in New York but mostly lived in Ohio and was a newspaper editor and politician. At the outset of the Civil War he joined the 14th Ohio Infantry and then the 111th Ohio Infantry and was active in the Carolinas Campaign. Towards the end of the war he was made brevet brigadier general following actions at the Battle of Franklin. After the war he moved to Toledo Ohio became editor of the "Toledo Daily Commercial and entered politics with the Republican party. In 1870 he was Secretary of State for Ohio.
