Migration from Vermont
Montpelier VT / Rutland VT: Vermont Historical Society / Academy Books 1983. Very Good condition. Sharp corners. Square and tight. NO owner's name or bookplate. NOT a remainder. NOT a library discard. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Pages are fresh crisp clean and unmarked. Volume 5 of the Growth of Vermont series. 12 illustrations including 2 maps in colors. Footnotes. Originally published in the PROCEEDINGS OF THE VERMONT HISTORICAL SOCIETY. This edition retains that publication's original pagination ix pp. 63-246 plus 11 page index to avoid indexing confusion. Bound in the original gilt-stamped green cloth. From the Preface: "It was planned that volume five of this series should carry an account of the period embracing the great migration from the state-- beginning at about the turn of the century-- as well as of the social and economic factor which lay behind it. However there had already been published serially in the Proceedings of the Vermont Historical Society an investigation into this problem which was subsequently acclaimed as one of the most valuable studies not only in the development of Vermont but in the history of the American westward movement. Therefore it seemed logical to include it as one of his series with such revisions as might have been necessitated since its original issue. It is a tribute to the definitiveness of the research however that after eight years no revisions are necessary except to note that the 'Song of he Vermonters' previously attributed to the early pioneers cf. p. 94 was actually written a half century later by John Greenleaf Whittier. However several new maps have been added and old ones redrawn for a more adequate illustration of the text. It should be evident that in investigation of this sort a map can frequently tell the story graphically and with greater clarity than several pages of text. The early portions of his volume overlap several of those which precede it and certain of its material will be found in a different context in other volumes of the series. No effort has been made to eliminate this for the organization is not strictly chronological and many events and trends had implications beyond the scope of the problem with respect to which they are principally treated. Pagination is the same as in the Proceedings--to avoid indexing confusion--and begins with page 63.". Reprint of the 1948 edition. Hardcover. Very Good condition/No dust jacket. Illus. by NOT a library discard. Great Packaging Fast Shipping. Vermont Historical Society / Academy Books Hardcover

STODDARD JOHN
The Stoddard Lectures Season of 1883-4 Promotional Circular
Boston: Deland and Barto Printers 1883. Softcover. Very good. John L. Stoddard 1850-1931 was a popular American traveler photographer and lecturer. Although the 10-volume set of his lectures is ubiquitous OCLC records no copies of this booklet which announces that he "will give his fully illustrated series entitled The Capitals of Europe at Carll's Opera House" New Haven CT over five nights in January and February. Detailed information is provided about each of five lectures: I Madrid and Lisbon; II Paris The Capital of Pleasure; III Berlin and Sans-Souci; IV St. Petersburg; and V Constantinople The Portal of the Orient. The back panel gives a rather unsatisfactory explanation for the item's shape: "This circular has been printed in this form to enable the holder to detach the pages referring to the different evenings and use as an evening program if desired." Six-panel accordion-folded booklet cut into an unusual shape a rectangle with two corners cut off. One short closed tear minor foxing at the folds. John L.
