Benjamin Harvey Hill was a U.S. Representative U.S. senator and a Confederate senator from the state of Georgia. He also had an unsuccessful run for governor against Joseph E. Brown. Hill was a talented orator he was the only non Democratic member of the Georgia secession convention 1861 where spoke out against the dissolution of the Union with former opponent Alexander Stephens. After the Civil War he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He later became a Senator from Georgia and served until his death in 1882. He was a well known spokesman for the South. Ben Hill County is named in his honor. This book is in very good condition: some light loss of color to embossed cloth over boards with no breaks to the cloth. Bright old lettering to front cover no lettering on spine. 101 pages portrait of Hill frontis with tissue paper. No foxing no markings tight binding. Dark area on back panel. Scarce. 131 years old. The Report was submitted by William A. Graham Secretary of the Navy on November 29 1851. Following the short 16 page summary report were a series of papers identified by letters A through I and numbers 1 through 15. Among the topics of these attachments are: List of deaths resignations and dismissions in the nave since last report; Report of Lieutenant Edwin J. De Haven relating to the expedition to the arctic seas in search of the British commander Sir John Franklin and his companions pages 23 to 41 Report of the board of examiners in relation to the condition.of the naval academy at Annapolis MD and Report of Professor Page relating to his experiments on the application of electro-magnetism as a motive poser in mechanics. The Annual Reports of the Secretary of the Navy SECNAV reports provide a comprehensive overview of the institutional and operational history of the U.S. Navy. These publications include communications to Congress summaries of departmental activities and changes estimates of naval forces correspondence from naval officers and other significant information from each year. The New York Times on December 4 1851 described the Annual Report of the Navy Department as a document of moderate length considerable ability and general interest.
