Two volumes pp. xiv 416 with lithographed frontispiece and 2 folding maps all backed on linen; vii 350 with linen-backed frontispiece. In a later simple blue loth binding. Both volumes well rubbed at the corners evidence of removal of an ink stamp on title page of Vol. I which also has a small white stain on the front board. Text clean bindings tight; very good. Featherstonhaugh a British-born gentleman farmer and self-trained geologist began his journey at Washington D.C. and traveled to Detroit via Pittsburgh and Cleveland. From there he navigated by canoe on Lake Huron and Lake Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay and then via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling. His party negotiated the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border before returning to Galena and St. Louis and then traveling through Tennessee Georgia and the Carolinas. Of the southern portion of his journey Clark III 39 writes: "His principal interests were the Indians and the gold-mining operations in Georgia and North Carolina and these items are described in considerable detail." Featherstonhaugh was Yorkshireman who became a Fellow of the Royal Society the Geological Society and the first U. S. government Geologist. On assignment for the U. S. Topographical Bureau Featherstonhaugh traversed the Fox River from Green Bay Wisconsin Territory to the Wisconsin River to Prairie du Chien and up the Mississippi by canoe up the western edge of Wisconsin past the eastern edge of Minnesota. Each plate shows mulitple views including geological sections from Georgetown D.C. to Green Bay and Green Bay to Prairie du Chien then Prairie du Chien to the Coteau de Prairie; also Wills Creek. First edition 8vo pp. 168; 4 engraved plates plus a large folding map in separate sleeve of later green cloth paper label on spine; original brown cloth extremities faded some spotting bookplate removed else very good. This copy inscribed to "The Hon. Mr. Woodbury with the comps. of the author." The map which measures approx. 27 1/2" x 40" shows "a portion of the Indian country lying east and west of the Mississippi River to the forty-sixth degree of north latitude" showing much of Wisconsin and sections of Illinois Minnesota and Iowa and all of Lake Michigan. The result of a British scientist's geological reconnaissance through the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi valley in 1835-37. Featherstonhaugh began his journey in Washington D.C. and traveled via Pittsburgh and Cleveland before visiting Detroit and travelling by canoe on Lakes Huron and Michigan to Mackinac and Green Bay thence via the Fox and Mississippi Rivers to Saint Anthony and Fort Snelling where Featherstonhaugh's party ascended the Minnesota River as far as Lake Traverse on the Dakota border and back again via Lake Pepin Galena and Saint Louis. Giannini Was The First Son Of Luigi Giannini 1840-1877 And Virginia Née Demartini Giannini 1854-1920. Luigi Giannini Immigrated To The United States To Prospect In Response To The California Gold Rush Of 1849. Giannini Attended Heald College But Realized He Could Do Better In Business Than At School. In 1885 He Dropped Out And Took A Full-Time Position As A Produce Broker For L. Scatena & Co. He Married Clorinda Cuneo 1866-1949 Daughter Of A North Beach San Francisco Real Estate Magnate In 1892 And Eventually Sold His Interest To His Employees And Retired At The Age Of 31 To Administer His Father-In-Law's Estate. Giannini Founded The Bank Of Italy In The Jackson Square Neighborhood Of San Francisco On October 17 1904. The Bank Was Based In A Converted Saloon As An Institution For The "Little Fellow". It Was A New Bank For The Hardworking Immigrants Other Banks Would Not Serve. The 1906 San Francisco Earthquake And Fires Leveled Much Of The City. In The Face Of Widespread Devastation During The Period After The Fire Giannini Was One Of The Few Bankers Who Could Satisfy Withdrawal Requests And Provide Loans Operating From A Plank Across Two Barrels In The Street. Giannini Made Loans On A Handshake To Those Interested In Rebuilding. Branch Banking Was Introduced By Giannini Shortly After 1909 Legislation That Allowed Branch Banking In California. Its First Branch Outside San Francisco Was Established In 1909 In San Jose. By 1916 Giannini Had Expanded And Opened Several Other Branches. He Bought Banks Throughout California And Eventually Bank Of Italy Had Hundreds Of Branches Throughout The State. Giannini Began Investing In The Bank Of America Los Angeles Because Conservative Business Leaders In Los Angeles Were Less Receptive To The Bank Of Italy Than San Franciscans Had Been. Upon Finalizing The Merger Of Their Banks Giannini And Orra Monnette Concurred That The Bank Of America Name Idealized The Broader Mission Of The New Bank. By 1929 The Bank Had Over 400 Banking Offices In California. The New Institution Continued Under Giannini's Chairmanship Until His Retirement In 1945; Monnette Retained His Board Seat And Officer's Position. Giannini Helped Nurture The Motion Picture And Wine Industries In California. He Loaned Walt Disney The Funds To Produce Snow White The First Full-Length Animated Motion Picture To Be Made In The Us. During The Great Depression He Bought The Bonds That Financed The Construction Of The Golden Gate Bridge. During World War Ii He Bankrolled Industrialist Henry Kaiser And His Enterprises Supporting The War Effort. After The War He Visited Italy And Arranged For Loans To Help Rebuild The War-Torn Fiat Factories. Giannini Also Provided Capital To William Hewlett And David Packard To Help Form Hewlett-Packard. Giannini Founded Another Company Transamerica Corporation As A Holding Company For His Various Interests Including Occidental Life Insurance Company. Giannini Had Long Been A Republican But With The Collapse Of The Republican Party In The Great Depression He Concerned Himself With Democratic State Politics. In The 1934 California Gubernatorial Election Giannini Worked Hard To Block Left-Wing Novelist Upton Sinclair From Winning The Primary For The Democratic Nomination. He Failed And With Support From The White House He Endorsed And Helped Finance The Republican Candidate Incumbent Frank Merriam Who Did Defeat Sinclair. <br/> <br/> University of California Press hardcover

Large bold "R.E. Fenton" in brown ink heavy stock 3½" X 2¼" card n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint age toning; mounting traces on verso. A handsome example. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9½" engraved by H.B. Hall of New York. Near fine. Titled "Eminent Upholders in Congress of the War for the Union" in ornate rolling typeface along the lower margin this depicts twelve notable Congressman head-and-shoulders portrait each within a small oval. Three ovals occupy the center the topmost being Fenton. A striking war-date image and superb signature example. unknown

Includes William Mosley Hall's speech "A National Railroad to the Pacific" the first on this subject Chicagoans focussed on getting support for the Illinois & Michigan Canal which would tie together the western waters of the Great Lakes with the great inland navigable rivers. "The meeting of that Convention raised the value of the Chicago property at once and was the starting point of its unheard of prosperity - Wm. M. Hall Commissioner." This is a much expanded annotated and indexed treatment of the original 1847 publication.
