New York. Supreme Court.
In the court for the correction of errors. Robert H. Morris mayor of the city of New York plaintiff in error vs. the People of the state of New York on the relation of John Heath and Samuel Roome defendants in error. Case furnished by the plaintiff in error.
New York: Wm. G. Boggs printer 1842. 8vo. 46 pp. 1 blank f.

Mayor Morris refused to swear in Heath and Roome as assessors claiming election irregularity. The state supreme court held: "The loss of the votes in one of the four districts into which the Sixth ward was divided did not defeat the election in that ward. If the votes of the First district are to be considered as wholly out of the question in consequence of the riotous proceedings which drove the Inspectors from the room where they were canvassing the result of the election must then be determined from the votes of the three remaining districts." Does this sound like foreshadowing of the 2000 presidential election Good. Stitched in self-wrappers. Title-page soiled with very shallow chipping. Corners bumped. Pages browned in the margins. Last leaf creased. Wm. G. Boggs, printer unknown books

New York. Newspapers
Prospectus of a Commercial Paper on a New Plan to Be Established in New-York and Called the New Universal Index Advertiser caption title
New York 1860. Very good. Broadside 15.75 x 9.75 inches. Old folds some minor loss and chipping. Rare broadside prospectus for the New Universal Index Advertiser a business newspaper in New York. The Universal Index Advertiser promoted itself as a paper that focused on the interests of business above all else without "those great names which have so violently agitated the American world." The prospectus touts a novel new order of arrangement in which organization would follow the plan of "dictionaries indexes concordances." and would classify its contents like such and organize its listing of commodities alphabetically by the commodity and then the name of the seller rather than the other way around as had been done. Intended to be published daily the paper would cost $12 a year; the bottom of the sheet is left blank for subscriber information. Despite its grand claims to revolutionize the format of the newspaper we can find no evidence that the Advertiser ever went to press. We do find a single copy of the broadside at the New-York Historical Society. unknown books

New York. Railroads
Highland Bridge Peekskill N.Y. Now Being Built Across the Hudson River on the Line of the Hudson Suspension Bridge & New England Railway.
New York: L.W. Ahrens Co 1885. Very good plus. Chromolithograph 21.5 x 28 inches. Matted. Minor wear soiling and a couple of modern pencil annotations at lower corners. A fine image of a proposed railroad bridge across the Hudson River just north of Peekskill New York. Plans to build a bridge over the Hudson River at the site between Fort Clinton and Anthony's Nose had been made as early as 1868. A contract was signed the following year and construction was expected to commence rapidly on the Hudson Highland Suspension Bridge. The purpose of the bridge was to provide a railroad toward Derby Connecticut enabling the supply of coal and iron for industry in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. By 1887 reports suggested the bridge would be finished in two years but by 1896 it was still unfinished when the Hudson Suspension Bridge and New England Railway Company reincorporated as the Hudson Highland Bridge and Railway Company. As a result of the long depressions including stock market crashes of 1873 and 1893 the bridge remained unfinished and the charter for construction expired in 1916. In March 1922 the state authorized the creation of the Bear Mountain Hudson River Bridge Company to complete the project. The bridge was opened on November 27 1924 and was the longest suspension bridge span in the world at the time but looked markedly different from the proposed bridge in this lithograph which bears a passing resemblance to the Brooklyn Bridge. New York. Sullivan County. Holly John C.; Niven Archibald C.
Two Manuscript Letters Signed Concerning Political Maneuvers at the Sullivan County NY Democratic Convention in 1853
Monticello NY 1853. Very good lightly browned edges and folds. 2 pp. bifolium 1 sheet. 8 x 10 inches. The first letter written prior to the convention is dated Monticello August 30 1853 from John C. Holly who had been elected Sheriff the prior year is addressed to "Friend James K. Gardner" 1805-1860 one of the most prominent citizens of Barryville which he help found; in 1852 he was elected to the New York State Legislature and held numerous other offices. Holly complains about the jockeying before the convention: "The time has arrived when the friends of the several candidates throughout the county were up and doing and the love of contention appears to be this fall who shall go to the Senate and it appears to be determination of the General and his aids to have the doctor on the course and if he cannot do it in one way why in some other. The game appears to be this that the doctor is to get as many delegates throughout the county as he can and the General as many as he can and when they come to the convention all go in for the doctor. Now Lord George W. Lord prominent Monticello lawyer is a candidate for nomination and have understood that you was and I think the best way is to write your forces. Lord is not in any way anxious for the nomination and would rather throw his votes in with you . than in the hands of the General." The second letter was written after the convention by Archibald C. Niven 1803-1882 a Surrogate of Sullivan County New York from 1828 to 1840 Adjutant General of the New York State Militia in 1844 Democrat to the 29th United States Congress 1845-1847 and District Attorney of Sullivan County 1847-1850 most likely also to Gardner though there is no salutation and it is marked dpl. on September 10th 1853; "it would seem that Lord had determined to be Senator & among other things asserted that he had a letter from you & that you were in his favor. This of course was unpalatable to those who are unfavorable to Lord for he was defeated at our town Caucus by a decided majority. Well the county convention . and as I am told only 10 towns were represented making 30 delegates and as Col. Tremain & others were determined to go for me they counted and found I had 17. Woodbridge has said or at least a letter was received here from Albany stating that he had there said that he could or would control your vote & had done so during the session. All this excited prejudices and free-soilers with Curtis Major James C. Curtis at the head set to work & by trickery." unknown books
