Al largo della Florida un bimotore con a bordo 65 uomini, quasi tutti braccianti agricoli, e precipitato in Atlantico. Passeggeri ed equipaggio hanno fatto in tempo a uscire dalla carlinga mettendo a mare vari battellini pneumatici di salvataggio. Ma immediatamente le acque si sono popolate di una torma di grossi pescicani che hanno fatto strage. Dalle navi accorse sono state tratte in salvo solo 37 persone." "Fuoco antiaereo in tempo di pace. Nel Bergamasco, tra il Serio e il Cherio, per proteggere vigne e frutteti dalla grandine che ogni anno provoca gravi danni, sono state sparate con successo, all'avvicinarsi di un minaccioso nembo, varie serie di razzi che, scoppiando a grande altezza, hanno interrotto la grandinata e sconvolto la formazione temporalesca che si è sminuzzata e dispersa; cosicche le piantagioni sono state salve.".

Le tre persone che erano sull'imbarcazione rimasero miracolosamente incolumi. Il tenente che pilotava l'apparecchio riporto ferite lievissime." "Un dramma nella Manica. Una barca di salvataggio uscita da Rye, presso Folkestone, per accorrere in aiuto di un piroscafo, al ritorno, non lontano dalla terra, veniva ingoiata da una formidabile ondata. Tutti i diciassette uomini dell'equipaggio annegarono, sotto gli occhi delle loro famiglie, che si erano raccolte a pregare su una rupe.".

FLORIDA. DS. 1pg. December 26 1843. Escambia County Florida Territory. A handwritten legal document concerning an estate dispute. It was signed by a clerk and docketed on the verso by several other parties including U.S. Marshal for the District of E. Florida John Beard. To the Marshals of the Territory of Florida Greeting We command you that of the goods and Chattels Lands and tenements of John N Stockton deceased in the hands of William T Stockton administrator to be administered you cause to be made the sum of one thousand seven hundred and thirty three dollars and forty seven cents for his principal and interest there on up to the eight day of December 1843 and eight per cent interest thereon until paid which John Campbell lately in our Superior Court for the County of Escambia in the western District of Florida recovered against the said William T Stockton administrator as aforesaid and the further sum of three dollars and eighty-seven cents Which to the said John Campbell was adjudged for his costs by him about his suit in this behalf expanded where of the said William T Stockton as administrator aforesaid in Convict as appears to us of record and failing the goods and chattels of the said John N C Stockton deceased And you are further commanded that you have the said sum of money in one hundred and twenty days from the date hereof before our said Court at the Court House in said County to render to the said John Campbell to satisfy and pay the debt and costs aforesaid Florida became a state in 1845. Assembled by a party of men on an extended tour and hunting expedition in the area the album documents numerous locations in southwest Florida in the period immediately following the extension of the Florida Southern Railroad into the Peace River region in 1886. All of the photographs are captioned in ink and all but the first nine which were taken at Interlachen near Gainesville relate to southwest Florida. The album includes scenes of the grounds of Charles Francis Jr. at Interlachen and the residence of Goerge Long; the railway station an office car and a street scene at Trabue; views of the Hotel Punta Gorda under construction; waterfront scenes along the Punta Rassa; views of Fort Myers; a Spanish Fishing village; a "Cracker" family and their orange grove; Judge Ziba King and his house at Fort Ogden; scenes of the Myakka River Bartow and Zolfo Springs and a number of hunting and camping scenes. Nineteenth century photographic albums of Florida are very scarce; the present album shows the rural landscape of southwest Florida at the dawn of the modern age. unknown

The Brigatine Apollo left the bay of Honduras on 11 June 1767 bound for Rhode Island on a course through the Gulf of Florida. "That about one of the clock in the morning of the day following the said Brigantine got on the reef of Florida whereupon the deponents immediately got out the said Brig.t's long boat and carried out an anchor in order to heave her off & likewise lightened the vessell by throwing over board some of her cargo: That at six of the clock the said brigatine began to leak very much & at eight o'clock these deponents discovered a vessell in shore which soon after came to their assistance & prov'd to be a sloop belonging to New Providence . having attempted in vain to get the said vessell off & the tide then flowing into her they thought it absolutely necessary to endeavor to save whatever they possibly could of the said Brigatine & her cargo and accordingly proceeded to unbend the sails & strip the said vessell . and do hereby solemnly protest aginst the said reef of Florida for all losses damages & expences hitherto sustained thereby ." <br /> <br /> The document does not specify the nature of the cargo going from British Honduras to Rhode Island but was perhaps mahogany or other timber used in colonial New England for cabinet making. unknown

Old tape marks on some folds. Folding view torn neatly in half. Moderate soiling and edge wear. Good. Large folding plate 50 x 5 inches short numbered key on verso of front wrapper. A large folding view looking towards St. Augustine from the Matanzas river. Executed by John S. Horton this is one of the variant issues with the key. It is possible the latter half of the key is lacking because only a portion of the buildings numbered are described in the text. "The drawing from which the woodcuts were made dates from the late 1850's; the names of several individuals are found in the St. Johns County census of 1850 and others are given in the 1860 census.The view was sold separately for many years and was apparently inserted haphazardly in various other works" - Servies. Extract from a Report to the Trustees of the Apalachicola Land Company . Made May 17 1837
New York 1837. First edition. 16pp. 8vo. Original printed yellow wrappers repairs to small chips and separation at fold. Provenance: Thomas W. Streeter booklabel on inner rear wrapper pencil notes on front wrapper and first page of text. First edition. 16pp. 8vo. Comprising 1.4 million acres of land on the Gulf of Mexico between the Apalachicola and Wakulla Rivers in West Florida the Forbes land grant was ceded by the Seminoles and Lower Creeks to John Forbes & Company in payment for debts. With trade with Native Americans unprofitable during the War of 1812 Forbes sold the claim. The treaty transferring Florida to the United States did not go into effect until 1821 and private title under Spanish land grants with the territory was questionable. Decades of lawsuits ensued going as high as the Supreme Court. After the resolution of claims the title was reorganized as the Apalachiocola Land Company in 1835. The present report by the President of the Board of Directors of the New York-based company describes the geography of the region and outlines the plan for its division into lots for dwellings and businesses. The report summarizes the surveys of the region and describes the land and its resources and flora. Sabin calls for a map in this report although Servies does not note one. However the text references a map on page 7 which was likely not issued with all copies. <br /> <br /> The development of the land was not successful and the company eventually folded. "As an object of speculation the Forbes Purchase not only originated in a chaotic era but was hampered for many years by uncertain title to the land. Its development was also hindered by a lack of good agricultural land as well as by competition from the United States itself which was selling new lands in the American West at the same time the Apalachicola Land Company was getting started" Upchurch.<br /> <br /> This Streeter copy is the only example appearing in auction records and the only one we can trace in the market. Streeter purchased it from Rosenbach in 1936 for $50 and it was acquired at the Streeter sale for $65 by dealer and former Rosenbach employee John Fleming. It was eventually acquired by the collector Jay Kislak. Servies 2010; Streeter sale 1240 this copy; Sabin 5878; American Imprints 43274. See John C.
