Travelogue of a Trip Up the West Coast in the 50s; Annotated and with Many Images.
California: N.p. 1950s. Diary-like annotated photo and postcard album of road trips taken in 1952 1955 1957/58 by Dr. Edwin L. and Zura Dyer of San Diego California. A mixture of photos post cards typewritten daily accounts ephemera and clippings housed in a green Scrap Book and Album from the Educational Press Inc. New York; measures 6 †x 9 â€. Typed dated diary entries bring the photos and postcards into context with several automobile trips taken by the Dyer family. The scrapbook was assembled by Dr. Edwin L. Dyer 1890-1971 an optometrist in San Diego with frequent mention in the dated entries to his wife Zura 1893-1962. The 1940 census lists three children Marshall Marian or Miriam Lee and Edwin Jr. Prior to his optometry practice Dyer had served as a Lieutenant in the 93rd Spruce Squadron stationed out of Vancouver Barracks Vancouver Washington during WW I. The first trip documented was to an annual convention of the California Optometric Association held in Sacramento February 1952. Zura Dyer is pictured in a newspaper clipping as one of four delegates for the Woman’s Auxiliary’s convention which was held simultaneously with the state optometric association’s in Sacramento. The typed account of the trip includes sights along the way where they ate and slept and impressions. “8 p.m. off for Los. Slept in car by road – left at 7 a.m. Wed. Drove thru mts on way to Bakersfield. Tehachapi. 7:45 a.m. breakfast at a lovely road house. A 76 mile drive to Bakersfield thru hills and farm land. Cattle. Snow in mts. At Gorman. Sacramento 320 miles off…†The trip is visually documented with colored postcard views of Sacramento Fresno Bakersfield and Los Angeles along with cut-out pages from the conferences they attended in Sacramento.The next trip documented was a vacation up the coast to Oregon and on to Seattle and the Vancouver B.C. area in July 1955. Sample entry from the return trip “Stayed in motel on S. side of Olympia Wash. Cooked dinner and breakfast. Took picture. $5 lunch in Portland then on to Witham’s. Arrived at Witham’s 4 p.m. Perry milking. Helen showed all the beautiful flowers etc. Ate cherries red raspberries cookies & cream. Left at 8: with car full of salmon chicken gooseberries jam and cherries. Stayed at Motel near Eugene double room grapes and berries all around. $5.00 Thurs. 14th Grant’s Pass. Warm. Ice-cream. 12:30 warm so decided to turn off into high mts. and visit Oregon Caves. Around side of mts. very tall pine trees. Two-hour trip thru caves conducted by young college boy. Very beautiful but damp trip.†A group of 3 †x 3 †photos document that trip Christmas time 1957 found the Dyers making another trip up the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco. The entries for this trip are more detailed and extensive than the first two. “Saturday December 21 / Up at 9 a.m. Had break-fast in Motel. Packed and started for San Francisco. Couldn’t find any Motels nearer than Daly City without paying as much as Hotels charge so went back to Daly City and found just what we wanted – Motel with kitchenette. We took it for 5 days and proceeded to make it look like home Walked up to a beautiful big market on the corner and bought a boneless butt eggs bread peaches cheese and apple pie. Boy! Ham and eggs never tasted better. What a life! Sunday December 22 / Arose at 8:30 a.m. and went to Golden Gate Park. Visited Aquarium Science Building planetarium and Botanical Gardens. Had lunch out of a slot machine. Arrived back at Motel at 6:30 p.m. Zura fixed a swell dinner. Wrote postals read Sunday paper and went to bed 10 p.m.â€The scrapbook contains over 80 smapshots and 28 post cards that visually document Dr. Dyer’s daily travel accounts on three different automobile trips. Together his entries and the images provide an interesting look at road travel in California and elsewhere in the 1950s N.p. unknown

Publisher's printed gray wrappers lettered in white and with a window on the front cover showing a photograph of the children's pool with a view of the tent city on the front. Front cover reading "Coronado Tent City. 1904. "Right Up to Now." Bay and Ocean Climate and Scenery Art and Engineering Here Combined to Goodly Purpose." Very good. Only 2 copies located by OCLC.One of the very first publications about the famed tent city at the Hotel Del Coronado. "From 1900 until 1938 The Del's Tent City was a popular camp-style destination for travelers who couldn't afford to stay in the big hotel. Designed like a small city its grid of dirt streets eventually became well-worn thoroughfares lined with mature trees. An early brochure described the accommodations: “A furnished tent comprises electric lights matting on boarded floor comfortable beds and cots bedding wash-stand mirror tables chairs rockers camp-chairs and stools necessary cooking utensils clean linen daily care of tent and laundry service of tent linen.†Tent City also featured restaurants a soda fountain library grocery store shops a small hotel the Arcade theatre bandstand dance pavilion merry-go-round shooting gallery swimming floats one with a high-diving board its own police department and daily newspaper" Hotel Del Coronado. San Francisco 1898. Original brass skeleton-style key 13â„4 inches in length attached by a small chain to a 4 x 13â„4 inch brass tag. Expected wear rubbing and discoloration. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folding case spine gilt. Apparently an original brass key for box 151 of the Nevada National Bank of San Francisco. The bank was founded in January 1898 and this key would seem to be contemporaneous with its opening. A nice piece of San Francisco and Wells Fargo financial relic. unknown

Fowler about Western life in Chino: As I come from town last night I found a letter from youall your kind letters & tokens of remembrances for between work on Ranch & Equalizing with Board in town. I have had very little time for anything in townI saw C. Ferguson just to speak with him & say howdyHenry Clive was up town last week got tight was a raving about woods & others. They got him to lie down in his corral where theClives horses were being fed about 12 oclock that night. Mrs. Woods having sent one of her boys up after woods to come home immediately as she was very sick & Woods called for his own team for start for home. The horse hostler was taking them from the stalls near where Henry was asleep. He aroused up & hollowed out in that your woods. I have got you now & fired his revolver. The hostler caught him took his pistol away. The watchman nabbed him. Henrys friend Elir to front heard the hostler to run away. Woods went after him & caught him at Healy beach brought him back & Henry is bound over for $1500 they had better send him up long enough for Henryfor Henry will kill himself if he ever gets loose. Woods has a solitaire connection with his home place. The letter is in very good condition. unknown

1885. Trade Paperback. 4 page letter. J. P. Dunn was Controller State of California 1883-1891. Edward C. Marshall was the Attorney General of California from 1883-1887. Autograph letter signed 4-pages on Controller's Department State of California letterhead dated Nov. 19 1885 from 'Clark.' Letter is responding to a request from Dunn who is in San Francisco for a copy of 'the Kentucky tax decision.' The letter continues with praise for the success of Dunn's efforts 'to make the Monarchs of the Rail bend their necks to the just yoke of the State.Stay right at San Francisc until no stone is left unturned against any possible act being done to render this triumph futile.' Letter continues to praise Dunn and criticize 'Marshall' 'in which his own action and lack of action to save the interests of the State he is sworn to protect writes the word damnable in red letters over his official name' and continues 'the lousy coin that corrupted his official palm was a prize more valuable in price to him than pure life and spotless character.' And 'he now harvests in callous-heartedness the sheaves of disgrace the waving fields from which he might have reaped honor and renown'.'The Governor is enjoying the victory hugely.' A Playful Photograph Album of a Group of Friends from Ontario California.
Ontario: N.p. 1910-1920. Original oblong 8 x 6 inches brown leather album bearing 188 original photographs. Most are snap shot size but some are large. Some fading to a few but overall a nice album with no dropped pictures and in good condition.Seems to be an album of a tight-knit group of friends in eastern Los Angeles primarily Ontario. There are 10 small head shots on the second page with Blanche Bradburn being the wildest and on the page following it shows what appears to be the same women with a title of "Mrs. Warmer's Sunday School Classes." They all appear too old to be taking Sunday School classes so likely they were teachers. Early photograph albums concerning Los Angeles are not so scarce but albums where the main people live in Ontario right at the foot of Mt. Baldy are few and far between. This is born out by the photos on the next two pages which concern a horse and buggy outing to Cucamonga Canyon in 1910. Here we can see that the teachers are talking them on a field trip. They are next off to Urbita Springs near San Bernardino which offered a lake and swimming area along with amusement rides in the location that is now Inland Center Mall. Nest trip; Redondo Beach and Pier but this time the youngsters are left behind. After a brief trip back to Cucamonga Canyon the go by car to Stoddard's Canyon in Idaho where they spend a great deal of time hiking and exploring.The group seems to dwindle in size yet their next trip is a gutsy one; up the Owens Valley to Mammoth. It is here that the captions stop and the album turns into a sort of remembrance of friends and the children they birth through the years. There is one fun photograph of one of the women playing golf. Finally at the end we see a group shot of them all again looking considerably older and wiser but still smiling. N.p. hardcover

N.p.: N.p. A large photograph album with hundreds of snapshots. This appears to have been assembled by an Austrian immigrant named Liesel Ficht. Her final home was in the Hollywood Hills. Liesel and her husband appear to have been the host willing or not we do not know to many of their Austrian family and friends as they went almost everywhere. Irvine Park; Hndenberg Park; Joshua Tree viewing; Knotts Berry Farm in 1850; Disneyland in 1956; Doheny Beach now Playa del Rey: Santa Barbara; Bullfights in Tijuana; Agua Caliente Race Track; Las Vegas in 1954 with the Desert Inn and The "21 Club"; Solvang; Rosa Rita Beach; Laguna Beach; San Francisco; Many of Burlingame CA a branch of the family; and many of their trips back to Austria and Germany. Almost all captioned but unfortunately almost all of people. They appeared to enjoy drinking and partying. The quality of the photographs vary widely but still an interesting album of a immigrant family living in Southern California in the 1950s. N.p. unknown

Cohen, prominent San Francisco lawyer, book collector, and leader of the Jewish community, was unjustly accused of embezzling funds which belonged to creditors of the firm of Adams & Co. , a banking house which had recently defaulted. The case involved transactions with the California Steam Navigation Company. In 1862 the case was dismissed and Cohen, who became chief counsel to the Central Pacific Railroad, was vindicated. His lawyer, Trenor W. Park, had moved from his native Vermont to California in 1852, where he was counsel to the Vigilance Committee and became involved with Fremont in the Mariposa Mine; Stanly was a North Carolina Congressman who had moved to San Francisco in the 1850's. Beautiful San Antonio Canyon; A Choice Collection of Superb Half-Tones from Recent Photographs.
Ontario: Chas. G. Frankish 1909. First and only edition. Quarto 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Unpaginated. Title plus 65 ll. each with a photographic illustration on the recto and descriptive text by the publisher on the opposing verso Publisher's stapled wrappers lettered in dark green and with a photographic illustration of a Yucca plant. Small chip to base of spine and the staples have bitten deep but a very good and clean copy.Rare in the trade and 9 located by OCLC.San Antonio Canyon is at the base of Mount Baldy and now just north of the towns of Upland and Ontario. Chas. G. Frankish moved to Ontario in 1885 after trading his 10-acre citrus ranch in nearby Riverside for 80 acres of undeveloped land on Euclid Avenue south of the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. He moved to Ontario because he firmly believed in what the Chaffey brothers were attempting to accomplish with their planned "Model Colony" and also because he foresaw Ontario's potential for growth and development. When he learned that the Chaffey brothers were planning to sell their interest in the model community he quickly joined with a small group of investors to organize the Ontario Land and Improvement Company. In February 1886 Frankish was named president and manager of the newly formed company. He took an active role in the promotion and sale of the company's land holdings. Under his management the company sold $1015000 of real estate during its first two years of existence.Frankish was actively involved in the planning and development of Ontario. He was responsible for the design of almost all of the city south of the Southern Pacific tracks and he established and ran Ontario's first ban the Ontario State Bank. "The well known 'Raymond' granite quarries near Raymond in Madera County not only are and have been for a number of years the most important mineral industry of the county but they are also an important factor in the state's production. As has already been noted… these deposits of workable building stone are located in the western edge of the Sierra foothills. There are two quarries about 1 mile apart circa 1914 on the east side of a small valley about 2 miles east of Raymond which is the terminus of the Berenda-Raymond branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Both quarries are served by spur tracks from this branch line. It is now recognized that this stone is not excelled by any other building granite found either in this state or elsewhere. It is noted for its beautiful white color the fineness and uniformity of its texture its weathering qualities and its freeness in working. As to this last named feature it lends itself readily to all classes of fine structural carving."1998 Observer:"Raymond is an interesting little place. It used to be a large bustling town in the late 1800s because a railroad spur was built to it and stage coaches were used to carry passengers to Yosemite. Later another railroad track was built in from Merced in 1907 and Raymond lost all of the tourist business to Yosemite. Of all the buildings built then only a few are left; and everything built for the railroad is gone except for a monument across the street from the store about the Wild Cat Station Raymond CA. There is another monument in front of Hills Pride Inn about the town of Knowles. Luckily for Raymond someone had discovered the granite nearby in 1886 so the granite business helped keep Raymond alive - only the town didn’t flourish as much as during the Yosemite times." <p>Hollywood: Press of Hollycrofters 1933 One of 125 copies of this collection of aphorisms and anecdotes by Nicolas Chamfort 1741 – 1794 author and secretary to the sister of Louis XVI. Publisher's reddish-brown leather titled in gilt on spine. . Octavo. Set in Poliphilus and Blado and printed on handmade paper at the Press of Hollycrofters. Some edgewear and smudging. Toning to edges. A very good copy. We could not find much information on the Hollycrofters. Their publications date from 1929 to 1958 with most dating from the 1930s. Their other titles include Lucile Phillips Morrison's Doll Dreams 1932 which compiled short fiction by children with illustrations by California artists like Paul Landacre and Millard Sheets. They also published books with a Western Americana interest including Indians of Death Valley by Lydia Clements 1953 and Orphans of the Desert by Leo Papiano 1929 which was one of their earliest publications.</p> Press of Hollycrofters, hardcover

Two Photographs of John Brown’s Sons Owen and Jason Outside Their Cabins in the San Gabriel Mountains
Los Angeles California 1880. Two photographs measuring approximately 4 ½ x 7 ½ inches. Pasadena Historical Society stamps verso. One with manuscript caption verso including “Mtn Home of John Brown’s Sons Located just south of Brown’s Peak between Millards Cañon arroyo secoâ€. Wrinkling and marginal tearing with some missing corners. One photograph with tape residue. Very good. Owen Brown 1824–1889 and Jason Brown 1823–1912 were two of abolitionist John Brown’s twenty children. Owen Brown participated in both the Pottawatomie massacre and the Harpers Ferry raid. Following the unsuccessful raid he led the party of escapees to Pennsylvania. He lived in Put-in-Bay Ohio until 1885 when he joined his brother Jason—who was not involved in his father’s activities—in Pasadena. The two lived in poverty in mountain cabins several miles outside the city; offered here are two photographs of the brothers standing outside their cabins. In their time in Pasadena they were described as eccentric and hermetic but were liked and respected by those in town. Several obituaries of Owen Brown describe how witnessing the growing anti-Chinese sentiment in the region the brothers hired two Chinese men from the area to work for them “for the sake of the principle although they had no need†of the workers.1 One of these laborers may be the third man standing behind Jason Brown in the photograph where the brothers are astride donkeys.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Brown family and their legacy.<br /> <br /> 1 “The Late Owen Brown. N.p. but perhaps Oakland or Berkeley 1944. Very good. Printed broadside 5.25 x 8 inches. Minor foxing and staining light edge wear penciled note covering most of verso. A small and apparently unrecorded broadside calling for African Americans interested in working as bus drivers and street car operators in the San Francisco Bay Area during the latter portion of World War II. The notice calls for interested parties to apply at the offices of the East Bay Employment Association between 4:00 and 8:00 PM between December 1 and 9 1944. We could locate no information on the East Bay Employment Association but it was almost certainly located in either Oakland or Berkeley. This employment advertisement was perhaps the result of a wartime shortage of bus drivers and street car operators in the Bay Area. We could locate no other copies of this interesting and somewhat mysterious broadside. unknown

Los Angeles: Black Business Directory Inc 1970. ii66pp. Square quarto. Original illustrated peach wrappers printed in black stapled. Minor edge wear and rubbing uneven toning to wrappers. Text toned but clean. Very good. A rare business directory intended for use by the African-American community of Los Angeles at the outset of the 1970s. The cover touts the directory's series motto: "Most Complete & First of Its Kind." The directory itself contains listings for a wide variety of businesses presented alphabetically by business type ranging from "Accountants" to "Youth Organizations & Centers." As with most other directories the listings are interspersed with advertisements for a plethora of local Black-owned or managed businesses including First City Savings Clarke's Furniture Vermont Volkswagen Friendly Chrysler-Plymouth Lewis Bakery and Soul Deli Triple AAA Building Maintenance Service Foreman Driving School Magnificent Bros. Hair Styling Salon Kelsey's Termite and Pest Control Leo's Plastic Slip Covers Willie Greene's Travel Service Medallion Printers & Lithographers and numerous others. The advertisements are often illustrated with portraits of the managers or proprietors of the businesses. The penultimate page of the directory is reserved for a listing of "Supporting White Business." There is also a full-page ad for the publication itself which touts its advantages and purpose: "Black Business Directory -- Contains over 5000 competitive Black Businesses in over 250 categories. Purpose -- to stimulate minority employment by exposing minority businesses services and products."<br /> <br /> All four of the directories that we know of in this series are rare. OCLC reports just three copies of the first volume published for the summer of 1969 at the New York Public Library the Bancroft Library and the University of Southern California; and just two copies of the second volume published in the Winter of 1969-70 at NYPL and the Bancroft. The present work is only the second copy of the Summer 1970 edition that we have ever seen or of which we are aware with no institutional copies reported in OCLC. No copies of the Winter 1970-71 or Summer 1971 editions exist as far as we know though they were likely produced as the Winter of 1971 edition is reported at three institutions -- the University of Southern California the Bancroft and Yale. Oakland: Voice Publishing Company November 11 1960. About very good. 8pp. Large folio. Gathered signatures. Uniformly tanned moderate edge wear old folds with minor wear at fold ends. A representative issue of a scarce Bay Area African-American weekly newspaper. Established in 1919 the California Voice later touted itself as "The oldest Black paper West of the Rockies." The present issue includes a mixture of race-related stories and straightforward news articles. The former are represented by pieces on the front page focusing on police discrimination housing desegregation civil rights voter suppression and other issues. The banner headline relates to the honoring of Smith Robinson as "one of its foremost citizens" by the city of Healdsburg. Other articles in the newspaper relate to African-American society sports and editorials interspersed with numerous advertisements for local businesses including Safeway. This issue was produced under the editorship of Louis H. Campbell by longtime publisher and World War I veteran Elbert Allen Daly. Los Angeles or Chicago 1926. Single sheet 9.25 x 16 inches folded three times vertically to form a slim 8pp. pamphlet. Dampstain to top margin throughout moderate soiling throughout especially along bottom margin slight biopredation to one panel. About very good. A rare pamphlet touting the advantages of Eureka Villa a 1920s real estate development near Los Angeles intended for African American home buyers. Sydney Dones was the developer and head of the Eureka Villa Improvement Association with offices in Los Angeles and Chicago. Eureka Villa was founded on about a thousand acres purchased by Dones and his fellow investors in 1924 near the long-abandoned Mexican mining town of Val Verde. The planned community was envisioned as an affordable and welcoming home and vacation destination for Black folks in southern California who were otherwise excluded from most public amenities and priced well out of home ownership anywhere near the city. The present pamphlet or flyer includes a poem about the community by Dones himself information on how to buy a lot a short introduction by Dones but is mostly comprised of a long series of detailed questions and answers about the development. An example of the latter: "Q. What work can we get near Eureka A. Eureka is just one and a half hours' ride from Hollywood where a large number of our people are employed and too there will be a number of people needed to build Eureka Villa." Just four copies reported in OCLC at the Huntington Bancroft UC-San Diego and Princeton. unknown

Extra! Extra! Extra! Peace Everybody! Father Divine Is God! Peace to All the World! caption title
Los Angeles: California Eagle 1934. Good. Broadside 14.5 x 9 inches. Moderate toning old folds very minor loss at two crossfolds a few short splits along fold lines some small marginal chipping. A highly ephemeral broadside touting the message of Father Divine and denouncing a recent fraud by "a Set of People from Hollywood" who attempted to use Father Divine's name to purchase the Hotel Dunbar. Father Major Jealous Divine 1882-1965 known earlier in his life as George Baker was the most prominent Black religious cult leader of the 1930s believed to be a divine messenger the messiah or God himself by tens of thousands of African Americans and middle-class whites during the Great Depression. In November 1931 Divine and seventy-eight of his followers were arrested for disturbing the peace at the Reverend's property in Sayville New York on the south shore of Long Island. Father Divine was tried and found guilty in June 1932. The judge -- who interestingly died of a heart attack just days later speaking to Divine's followers of heavenly retribution -- called him a fraud and a "menace to society" handing down the maximum sentence of a year in prison. He actually spent only a few weeks in jail before his lawyers secured his release on appeal. When freed Father Divine moved to Harlem where his "Peace Mission" of social and economic betterment acquired international acclaim. <br /> <br /> One unintended consequence of Father Divine's success is encapsulated in the present broadside. The first portion of the work quotes from an address by Father Divine delivered in New York on May 17 1934. In this message Father Divine discusses housing as an extension of evangelical work the world of commercialism as a good provided it is "magnified and made honorable" and then lambasts "the racketeers the speculators and grafters and the money-changers for they made merchandise of the Spirit of God's Presence." These various aspects dovetail into the issue at hand. Apparently a group of nefarious individuals in Los Angeles were attempting to "close a deal on the Hotel Dunbar" in the name of Father Divine. Not so says the broadside for this "set of people in 51st Street Los Angeles Calif. Santa Cruz included are endeavoring to use Father Divine's name to make believe." The broadside was printed on the press of the California Eagle an African-American newspaper published in Los Angeles between its founding in 1879 and its last issue in 1964.<br /> <br /> This is the only Father Divine item we've encountered that was published in California and as far we know the only copy of this ephemeral broadside in existence.
