1950. Japanese American California Japanese American family photograph archive 1950s documenting everyday life in Southern California during the decade following the forced wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans under Executive Order 9066. The photographs record domestic routines family celebrations and recreational outings among a Nisei and Sansei generation rebuilding community life after release from War Relocation Authority camps in 1945. Rather than depicting the confinement and dispossession that dominate the visual record of Japanese American wartime experience the images show families participating in the expanding consumer culture and leisure environment of postwar California. Smiling portraits backyard gatherings and excursions to regional landmarks illustrate how Japanese American families navigated the transition from wartime displacement to postwar stability asserting belonging within American suburban and urban life while rebuilding family networks disrupted by incarceration.<br /> <br /> Archive of approximately seventy two original silver gelatin photographs created during the 1950s depicting Japanese American family life across Los Angeles County and surrounding regions. Photographs range in size from approximately 3.75 x 4.5 inches to 8 x 10 inches. The images show informal family portraits children playing in residential yards and gatherings inside modest homes furnished with mid century décor including a television console and living room seating. Numerous photographs document recreational travel and tourism including visits to Griffith Park where family members ride the miniature railroad and trips to Disneyland shortly after the park's opening in 1955 with photographs taken along Main Street U.S.A. and before Sleeping Beauty's Castle. Additional photographs record outings to the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountain ranges picnic scenes and group portraits taken during day trips to parks and scenic overlooks. Clothing and hairstyles visible throughout the photographs reflect the fashion and social aspirations of mid century Southern California including neatly pressed shirts dresses and casual leisure wear associated with postwar prosperity.<br /> <br /> These photographs document a formative period in Japanese American history when communities across California rebuilt social and economic life following the disruption of wartime incarceration. More than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry had been removed from the West Coast between 1942 and 1945 and confined in War Relocation Authority camps including thousands from the Los Angeles region. By the early 1950s many families were reestablishing homes businesses and neighborhood networks while participating in the broader culture of postwar suburban growth and leisure tourism. Post WWII Japanese American Los Angeles California Japanese American family photograph archive 1952-1953 documenting the rebuilding of Nisei and Sansei community life in Los Angeles during the decade following the wartime incarceration of Japanese Americans under Executive Order 9066. The photographs record a network of relatives and friends living in the South Los Angeles communities of Gardena and Compton neighborhoods that became important centers of Japanese American resettlement after families returned from War Relocation Authority camps in 1945. Domestic portraits social gatherings and beach outings show a generation reestablishing family life friendships and leisure activities in Southern California only a few years after their forced removal from the West Coast. Through candid images of everyday recreation and neighborhood gatherings the archive documents the process by which Japanese American families rebuilt social networks and community identity in postwar Los Angeles.<br /> <br /> Archive of thirty original black and white silver gelatin photographs created primarily between 1952 and 1953 most measuring approximately 3.5 x 4 inches and many bearing handwritten captions identifying individuals and locations including Compton Gardena Redondo Beach and Catalina Island. Several photographs record gatherings at 942 E. Victoria Street in Gardena an address associated with Japanese American families returning to the area after the war. The images depict domestic interiors informal group portraits and neighborhood gatherings among a circle of friends whose captions identify individuals including Susie Fukutomi Jane Tamayo Ann Motoyoshi and Violet Muramato. One photograph dated August 24 1952 shows Fukutomi Tamayo and Motoyoshi laughing together with their feet in the surf at Redondo Beach. Another photograph portrays Violet Muramato seated outside a Southern California home wearing a patterned skirt and blouse framed by stucco architecture and palm trees characteristic of mid century residential neighborhoods. Additional photographs show multigenerational family portraits gatherings of young women indoors and excursions to Catalina Island while several images depict friends and relatives posed beside automobiles typical of early 1950s California life.<br /> <br /> The photographs collectively document a moment when Japanese American families across Los Angeles were reconstructing everyday life after years of displacement and incarceration. Between 1942 and 1945 more than 120000 people of Japanese ancestry were removed from their homes and confined in camps administered by the War Relocation Authority. Light handling wear with several minor corner creases; handwritten identifications remain clear and legible and photographs remain crisp without significant fading or toning. Overall very good condition. When restrictions on returning to the West Coast were lifted in 1945 many families resettled in neighborhoods such as Gardena and Compton where Japanese American churches businesses and social networks gradually reemerged. 1966. Japanese American Post-war intergenerational Japanese Americans visiting northern California natural landmarks ca. 1960s. Comprising 20 original silver gelatin and chromogenic prints most measuring approximately 3.5 x 3.5 inches this collection includes black-and-white and color images of group travel to Yosemite National Park the Wawona Tunnel Tree and other iconic Sierra Nevada destinations. Several photographs are inscribed in English on the verso with handwritten annotations including "Mr. & Mrs. Hayamizu" multiple dates from 1966 and one marked 1970. One photo bears Japanese text on the reverse. Subjects appear to be second-generation Nisei and possibly Issei Japanese Americans with attire suggesting middle-class leisure travel in retirement likely from the Bay Area or Los Angeles. The elderly subjects in these photos-seen relaxing by a fire posing by Mirror Lake or gathering beside a tour bus-were among the over 110000 Japanese Americans forcibly removed from their homes and incarcerated during World War II under Executive Order 9066. Their visible comfort in these photos taken at places like Yosemite that had once been off-limits or symbolically distant from everyday life reflects not just the resumption of leisure but the quiet reclamation of public belonging. The archive captures a Japanese American travel group at a moment of historical reckoning. By the mid-1960s many elderly Japanese Americans were making postwar returns to public spaces after decades of displacement and marginalization. <br /> <br /> The photographs preserve an image of resilience generational continuity and the slow reweaving of Japanese American presence into the national landscape-especially in California the state that had been both home and site of removal. The use of color film in many of the 1966 images enhances the warmth and familiarity of these scenes underscoring their subjects' joy and dignity. Inscriptions on verso confirm names locations and dates making this not only a personal record but also a rare visual document of Japanese American senior community life in the post-internment era. PANORAMIC PHOTOGRAPH CELEBRATING THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF THE BUDDHIST SCHOOL AT THE LOS ANGELES BRANCH OF THE HIGASHI HONGANJI TEMPLE
Los Angeles: Japanese Photo Studio Association 1940. Panoramic photograph 10 x 24 3/4 inches. Minor wear vertical crease through image near the right edge. Very good. A striking panoramic photograph picturing the Japanese-American celebrants at the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Buddhist school at the Los Angeles branch of the Higashi Honganji Temple. The photograph is titled and dated in Japanese script; it relates the date of the celebration as the 13th 14th and 15th of September in the year 2600 after the birth of the Emperor Jimmu which is 1940. The photograph pictures a few hundred Issei and Nissei men women and children in a mixture of traditional Japanese gowns and caps and western suits and dresses. There are a few banners in the background relating to the temple and the celebration. The Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple is still active in Los Angeles. <br> <br> The celebration depicted here came just two short years before the beginning of the Japanese-American internment period which triggered fundamental changes in the practice of the Buddhist faith in America among Japanese-American citizens. As a result of anti-Japanese sentiment in the early 1940s Buddhists sometimes changed the names of their churches to sound more patriotic. They began to meet on Sundays to emulate Christian worship while singing from new hymnals that echoed those found in Christian churches. Sects within the church were forced to worship together. And the swastika - a Buddhist symbol for thousands of years - was replaced by the dharma wheel. <br> <br> In addition to the faith itself Buddhists within the Japanese American community were particularly vulnerable during the internment period. The American government believed that Japanese-American Buddhists were more likely to support Imperial Japan than Japanese-American Christians or those of another faith. Sadly this also represented the majority of Japanese Americans since most were Buddhist in the first place. Further the FBI classified Buddhist priests as "known dangerous Group A1 suspects" and sought them out among the first groups to be imprisoned. Many Buddhist priests were whisked away to relocation centers even before Franklin Roosevelt's issuance of Executive Order 9066. <br> <br> We could locate no other copies of the present panoramic photograph in institutions or auction records. An important photographic record of a portion of the Japanese-American Buddhist community in Los Angeles just a short time before the internment period changed everything. A handsome group photograph memorializing the attendees of the 1952 annual conference of the Northern California Young Buddhist League. The photograph depicts over 200 finely-dressed Japanese-American men and women and even a few Anglo Americans organized by region which are indicated by printed signs. The delegates to the conference came from Lodi Placer Marysville Sacramento Delta Stockton and Florin. A sign hanging on a building behind the delegates reads "Greetings Busseis" a general term for Buddhist youth. <br> <br> Interestingly 1952 was the year that several chapters of Young Buddhists and other Japanese American mutual aid societies and support groups successfully implemented several changes to Japanese immigration policies brought about by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 the McCarran-Walter Act. While this law still provided for some discriminatory policies it also allowed a new path to citizenship for most Asian Americans. Groups such as the Northern California Young Buddhist League helped many Japanese-American Issei attain citizenship previously forbidden by U.S. immigration law. <br> <br> A rare image with no copies reported in OCLC. unknown books

A handsome panoramic photograph by Japanese-American photographer Frank Kamiyama depicting the worshippers for the service to reinstate the Buddha's statue in the temple. The photo shows a large group of Japanese Americans assembled on the street in front of a bungalow-style building whose porch is draped with large curtains. The children who line the front row are in ceremonial and traditional costume; behind them at the center are three men wearing stoles of office; a band stands at the right end armed with brass and wind instruments; several spectators appear at the left edge of the image some in parked cars waiting to drive through the street. Most of the worshippers are women.Panoramic photographs such as this one were often taken to commemorate important events or celebrations and were particularly popular from the 1920s through the 1940s. Frank Kamiyama 1886-1974 was a Japanese-American photographer with a studio located on Tulare Street in Fresno. He was an important documentarian of the Japanese community in Fresno and the surrounding area.
