‎die Seiten sind altersbedingt gebräunt, der Einband ist leicht fleckig, Einbandkanten teils bestoßen, Nein, es geht in Helena, dem Hafenstädtchen am breit und mächtig seine trüb-gelben Wasser zum großen Delta wälzenden Mississippi, seit einiger Zeit nicht mehr mit rechten Dingen zu. Flatboote, hochauf mit Handelsgütern beladen, verschwinden in den Fluten des Stroms. Menschen werden beraubt und ermordet, aber von den Tätern fehlt jede Spur. Auf eigene Faust macht sich der kleine, tollkühne und hitzköpfige Ire O`Toole mit einem winzigen Boot zur Erkundungsfahrt auf, und in der Tat entdeckt er den Schlupfwinkel der Piraten. Dann überstürzen sich die Ereignisse, die Gerstäcker packend und voller Farbigkeit zu schildern vermag. Das 1848 erschienene dritte Buch Gerstäckers, das wie fast alle seine Arbeiten durch das eigene Erleben Genauigkeit und Wirklichkeitsfülle erhält, gehört zu den großen Beispielen realistischer deutscher Abenteuerliteratur.
