A promotional work for the railroad this pamphlet is subtitled "A few testimonies of the results obtained from farming in this wonderful region." The text is comprised of letters written by real residents in this "Wonderland of the Northwest" noting bountiful crop yields and cheap land. Chicago IL: Chicago & North-Western Railway. 1901. First Edition; First Printing. Flexible cloth. Near Fine. This book has a limp cloth binding in a dark mustard color. The book is in Near Fine condition and was possibly issued without a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book have some beginning bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. The contents include a full color map at the beginning after the first free page a black and white frontispiece a folded full color map of the train routes and reservations of the northrwest at the rear of the book and multiple black and white illustrations and photographs throughout. "The Chicago and North Western reporting mark CNW was a Class I railroad in the Midwestern United States. It was also known as the "North Western". The railroad operated more than 5000 miles 8000 km of track at the turn of the 20th century and over 12000 miles 19000 km of track in seven states before retrenchment in the late 1970s. Until 1972 when the employees purchased the company it was named the Chicago and North Western Railway or Chicago and North Western Railway Company. The C&NW became one of the longest railroads in the United States as a result of mergers with other railroads such as the Chicago Great Western Railway Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway and others. By 1995 track sales and abandonment had reduced the total mileage to about 5000. The majority of the abandoned and sold lines were lightly trafficked branches in Iowa Illinois Minnesota South Dakota and Wisconsin. Large line sales such as those that resulted in the Dakota Minnesota and Eastern Railroad further helped reduce the railroad to a mainline core with several regional feeders and branches. Chicago IL: Poole Bros. Chicago. Fair. Pamphlet. Illustrated wrapper showing a collection of anthropomorphic animals gathered around a book. A delicate little pamphlet 5 1/4 x 5 1/16 inches with a fragile string-tied binding. Wrappers are soiled and chipped; some minor tearing to pages at binding but booklet remains intact; first leaf sticking at binding. Half inch triangular chip missing from back wrapper. Toning and soiling inside. What at first glance seems to be a typical child's ABC book is in reality a land promotional piece for the Chicago & North-Western Railway. "R is for Railroad train with equipment the best; Which on the North -Western Will take you out West." Includes a small inset map of the Chicago North-Western Railway and 8 pages of text extolling the virtues of the million acres of land the railway owns ready to sell in southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota. An alphabet book in rhyme that includes text describing the benefits of moving to Dakota Minnesota and other places served by the Chicago and North Western Railway Company. 4 copies found on OCLC which lists the date as 1889.
