‎RAILROAD PUBLIC SAFETY PHOTO ARCHIVE. FROMMER Henry G. HARRISON William R. JENSEN Thomas Photographers.‎

‎An exceptional archive of photographs shot and used as evidence in railroad crossing public safety accident lawsuits and criminal cases in the 1920s in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The images depict the evolution of railroad crossing warning signs surrounding areas tracks surrounding conditions and in a couple cases when an automobile was involved.‎

‎Harrington Park Haworth Bogota Jersey City Harrison Irvington Farmingdale & Metuchen NJ & Chester PA: New York Ontario & Western Railway New York Central Railroad Pennsylvania Railroad 1923-1930. Ninety-six silver gelatin photographs many printed on glossy photo paper stock others on thick stock sized from 4.5 x 7 in. up to 11 x 13 in. w/ the majority 8 x 10 in. many linen backed some mounted on linen sheets w/ typescript text below others w/ manuscript annotations w/in the image or on versos many w/ photographer’s stamps or attributions on versos or in lower margin and in one case at the gutter margin on linen-mounted stubs larger images w/ minor chipping & tears some rubbing edgewear a few w/ pin-holes from being mounted as exhibits still a VG grouping w/ most still retaining bright strong contrast. This fascinating archive of original photographs document the many different sites of accidents at railroad crossing through the 1920s in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Historically railroad crossings have been frequent sites of accidents in the United States from before the Civil War into the modern era. In the late 19th-century until 1927 railroad accident legal standards were established by the 1877 case of Continental Improvement Co. v. Stead and later the 1892 Grand Trunk Railway of Canada v. Ives in which the Supreme Court had indicated the traveling public needed to require reasonable care to detect and avoid trains and that the railroad was obligated to give signage and equipment providing reasonable and timely warning. These photographs show that most railroad crossings only featured Railroad Crossing Shanty’s in which the gatekeepers or railroad personnel would flag down and warn drivers when present of approaching trains although as shown by these photos many of them advise that they were unmanned and necessarily pedestrians motorists and bicyclists needed be aware of their own risk. In addition there are many of the photos showing the early “Crossbuck†signs with the railroad crossing signs forming an X and even some by the mid-1920s appear to have rudimentary Cataphote reflectors or “cats eyes†to make the more visible. Included are photos showing the crossing on the New York Ontario & Western Railway Tracks of accidents involving Elmer Glarmer in Harrington Park NJ Sept. 22 1927 in Haworth NJ with George Richards in Dec. 1926 and Arthur Marsilio b. 1908 of Bogota NJ who was the son of a railroad bridge tender with photo showing the impact point on the cow catcher and brest beam of engine #3015. Also shown are photos of a 1920s era International Motor Co. Mack chain-driven truck struck by a Pennsylvania RR locomotive in Jersey City NJ by William R. Harrison losing a load of sewer pipes. In addition there are photos of the intersection in Harrison with factories in the background and identifying typescript mounted on versos of this industrial Newark suburb which was the home of Edison Lamp Works Worthington Pump & Machinery the RCA Co. Peter Hauck Brewery Otis Elevator and others. The very large photos indicate in manuscript they were taken for accidents involving David Cockram b. 1875 screen door salesman and blacksmith and his wife Daisy Cockram b. 1876 killed in Farmingdale NJ in August 9 1924. Others show an accident site at a railroad crossing in Metuchen NJ August 15 1923 with the photos taken later in Dec. 123 in the case of Harry Fisher. See: Philip Goldstein W.R. ‎Chicago & North-Western Railway -- Madison Division. Between Milwaukee and Madison.‎

‎N.p. Chicago: Chicago & North-Western Railway 1882. Broadside. 14" X 9". Very good. ‎RAILROAD ARCHITECTURE. FARRELL ES. COLLINS CJ. & BURNS WT.. E. S. C. J. W. T.‎

‎Eight photographs and an architectural drawing of the Union Pacific Railroad Agency office in the First Bank of Bend office building showing the layout exterior signage advertising posters brochures and desks at the close of World War II.‎

‎Bend OR & Omaha NE: Union Pacific Railroad Co. Dept. of Traffic 1945. Twelve pieces. Two 4to. TLS 1 on thin onion-skin paper the other on thicker paper stock; Two architectural drawings of offices one sample of Union Pacific offices in Milwaukee WI the other in pencil on onion skin of offices in Bend OR; 8 silver gelatin photos sized 8 x 10 in. all with excellent contrast. This intriguing grouping opens with a letter from the Union Pacific Dept. of Traffic offices in Omaha requesting photos and floor plan of each Union Pacific office in the system including that of E.S. Farrell in Bend Oregon during World War II. To meet this requirement Farrell secured eight different photos of the office interior and exterior as well as furnishings along with a manuscript blueprint mapping out all the principal aspects of the offices. Two of the images show the large double-sided porcelain Union Pacific sign hanging from a wrought iron bracket painted glass sign and interior advertising. The office furnishings are pine and fir bookshelves chairs desks filing cabinets and more. By World War II the Union Pacific had formally absorbed the relatively independent carrier Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation Co. with most offices and signs bearing the Union Pacific names. ‎RAILROAD CHICAGO‎

‎Map of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad and its Connections‎

‎Chicago: Chicago Evening Journal 1878. Fine folding lithographed pocket map printed on pink paper 20 x 30inches with an inset of the Western States and Territories one or two separations at folds. A fine folding map and timetable for the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad system The Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad the official name of the Burlington Route started from humble beginnings February 12 1849 in Aurora Illinois. On September 2 1850 the first train chugged its uncertain way over six miles from Batavia Illinois north to Turner Junction and then eastward to Chicago over the tracks of the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad. The Burlington as it came to be known completed its own line from Aurora to Chicago in 1864 and the following year had the distinction of operating the first train into the newly-opened Union Stock Yards. The railroad across Iowa was the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad incorporated in Burlington in 1852. Operations began over the first few miles of track on New Year's Day 1856. The road reached Ottumwa by 1857 through Murray in the fall of 1858 and was completed to the Missouri River in November 1869. The trains of that day were pulled by small wood-burning locomotives only capable of pulling a dozen or so cars. The passenger cars were built of wood and were not very comfortable for the traveler. In 1868 the CB&Q completed bridges over the Mississippi both at Burlington and Quincy giving the railroad through connections with the B&MR in Iowa and the Hannibal & St Joseph Railroad in Missouri Burlington Route Historical society online. This is a large map showing the route and connecting lines centered on Chicago extending to Bangor and Quebec and westward to Denver and south to Dallas Houston San Antonio and Galveston. Each railroad is named with hundreds of rail stations located. At lower right is the large "Map of the Western States and Territories" which extends to Olympia Portland San Francisco Los Angeles and Fort Yuma. Extensive timetable on the verso of the map also advertisements for Sleeping Cars by the Pullman Company information for Emigrants etc. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
