"Distinguished survivor of the early flying days and of many campaigns the author was the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. This is the story not only of his own long and exciting years of service in many parts of the world but also of the Air Force itself from the time of the Flying Corps to the present day. In this book he strikes a new and very readable line among senior Air Force writers for he does not forget to give due place to the lighter and social side. His accounts of those early days when he served with the R.F.C. at Aboukir are both inspiring and amusing. After the First World War he had a highly eventful spell of service in Iraq Palestine and Transjordan and later in the early 1930's he went to Kenya and the Sudan. He has many good big-game stories to tell and many valuable comments to make also upon conditons in these troubled regions. A high-spot of his book is his account of the Battle of Britain throwing as it does considerable light upon the controversies regarding R.A.F. tactics and control. He had wide personal experience too of the war in Burma and was also present at Singapore when the Japanese surrendered. After the war before his final appointment in India he spent three years on United Nations work in the U.S.A. and he writes of America as of India with a sympathy born of intimate knowledge".
