Hagen Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Frederick AM. Browning. Winrich Behr. A. M.
ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION.
London: Leo Cooper 1993. 118 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10000 men who went into action 1400 were killed and more than 6000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' been captured however his fate would have been markedly different for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Haig' - Louis Hagen - was one of the few who got back to write the first and as is widely accepted one of the very best personal accounts of the battle. Forty-five years after the battle at a dinner party in Germany the author found himself next to a man of about his own age the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own side of the story which is included here. Here too are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion and of the reasons for its failure." Very slight bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine minor rubbing. New Expanded and Revised Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. Leo Cooper Hardcover

THE SPITFIRE LOG: A TRIBUTE TO THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS FIGHTER PLANE.
London: Futura 1990. 160 pp 7 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "On 6 March 1936 was born one of the most famous and best-loved aeroplanes the world has ever known the Spitfire. Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. When at the height of the conflict supplies of metal for new Spitfires ran short thousands of people donated old pots and pans for the sake of the gallant fighter. Today the Spitfire is still remembered with affection by all who flew in her. This tribute brings together a fascinating collection of writings by men who flew or admired her from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson to his German counterpart General Major Adolf Galland and from such illustrious names as H.E. Bates Richard Hillary Lord Beaverbrook and Richard Dimbleby. As well as thrilling accounts of aerial combat the book includes a Battle of Britain chronology a list of the twenty Spitfire squadrons and their bases the plane's specifications the story of its creation and a list of museums where Spitfires can now be seen." MARINE MUSCLE: HORNET AND HARRIER. WINGS NO.5.
London: Windrow & Greene 1993. 96 pp 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The McDonnell Douglas/Northrop F/A-18 Hornet and McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II provide the 'muscle' of the US Marine Corps' air element. Dedicated to just one mission - supporting the Marine rifleman down there in the dirt at whatever cost - they form a versatile hard-hitting highly motivated element of the Corps' overall ability to project American power overseas. Neither is particularly fast: but each is perfectly suited to its special roles. The Hornet famous for its agility and accurate delivery of a wide range of ordnance is the perfect fighter/bomber combination. The remarkable V/STOL Harrier can get airborne within minutes from just about any hard surface in the newly captured beachhead to put 'a world of hurt' on the enemy's front line. Between them they can clear the skies over the beachhead of enemy aircraft; respond instantly to the call for close air support at the forward edge of battle; and carry out interdiction bombing along the enemy's rear lines. This book presents a fascinating close-up look at both these battle-proven aircraft and their missions." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.
