London: William Kimber 1981. 203 pp large 8vo 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs maps drawings. "Only five minutes from launch to impact: not even enough time to give an air raid alert. They could not be tracked: they travelled too high and too fast to be shot down. These were the rocket 'Vengeance Weapons' launched in addition to the flying bombs in retaliation for British and American bombing raids on German cities. Damage inflicted upon London was considerable: 198 were killed by a flying bomb in the Aldwych hundreds died at New Cross and over one hundred civilians lost their lives in Smithfield Market. The author examines the effects of the V-1 flying bombs and V-2 rockets on a capital still showing the scars of the 1940-41 blitz. On 6th June 1944 only a few hours after the D-Day landings orders were passed down from German High Command to prepare the 'Vengeance Weapons' for an immediate assault on Britain." TRENTON: 50 YEARS OF AIR FORCE.
CFB Trenton 50th Anniversary Committee Trenton Ontario 1981. 160 pp oblong 8vo 8 5/8" H x 10 1/2" D hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "Ever since it was officially opened in 1931 the base of Trenton Ontario has been the most important military airfield in Canada. It began as a flying training base and in the early war years was responsible for training flight instructors who in turn helped to train the thousands of pilots in the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. After the war the base remained the home of Central Flying School and pilot training continued to be the primary activity. Post war expansion of commercial air traffic to and from Toronto gradually began to interfere with the freedom of movement of the trainers and in 1961CFS was moved to the open skies of the prairies and Trenton became the home of Air Transport Command. Throughout its 50 year history many thousands of airmen and airwomen have lived and worked here. Countless thousands more have passed through either on course or as air transport passengers. It is hoped that this book will be of interest to everyone who has been here by providing information about what happened here before or since their particular time at Trenton and by offering a nostalgic look at some of the people planes and places of their era." Minor edge wear one tiny edge dint. Dust jacket has one 1" closed tear archivally taped a knife cut across rear panel light browning small dint on rear flap -fold a few tiny closed tears minor edge wrinkling. Very Good/Good. First printing with complete number row 54321 on the copyright page. From the Dust Jacket: "At the start of the twentieth century the United States led the world in advances in aviation with the first successful engine-powered flights at Kitty Hawk North Carolina and Dayton Ohio beginning in 1903. Fifteen years later however American airmen flew European-designed aircraft because American planes were woefully inadequate for service on the Western Front. Why was the United States so poorly prepared to engage in aerial combat in World War I To answer this question Herbert Johnson takes a look at the early years of U.S. military aviation exploring the cultural technical political and organizational factors that stunted its evolution. Among the themes he traces are a chronic lack of government funding for military aeronautics intraservice conflict over control of the aviation program and the disruptive influence of a civilian 'aeronaut constituency' both on military discipline and on Congressional and public attitudes toward army aviation. Public misunderstanding was further fueled by the army's vacillation between lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air weapon systems Johnson says and public opinion was repelled by high-risk exhibition flying and revelations of negligence and favoritism in the Signal Corps's management of the aviation program. On the technical side the Wright brothers' patent litigation hindered the development of American aircraft and crippled the domestic aviation industry's manufacturing capacity. The United States then entered World War I with obsolete aircraft." . First Printing of the First Edition. Hard Cover.
