Williams Geoffrey. Foreword by Sir Michael Beetham.
FLYING THROUGH FIRE: FIDO - THE FOGBUSTERS OF WORLD WAR TWO.
London: Grange 1996. 228 pp 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs drawings/plans. "In the early years of World War II RAF bomber crews who frequently endured the opposition of German nightfighters and flak returned home only to discover their airfields completely fog-bound. Desperately short of fuel and often disabled by severe battle damage the many crashlandings that resulted took a savage toll in valuable aircraft and crews. Prompted by Winston Churchill the challenge to overcome this deadly hazard was taken up by the government's Petroleum Warfare Department and the result was the development of FIDO - Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation. Lines of burners fuelled by thousands of gallons of petrol were installed beside the runways to literally burn the fog off the airfields thereby allowing aircraft to take-off and land in relative safety. This book portrays the early hair-raising attempts to produce fog-free airfields. The eventual result was a countrywide FIDO system at fifteen British airfields covering most RAF and USAAF frontline Commands. By the time of the Ardennes Offensive in the winter of 1944 FIDO enabled over one thousand Allied aircraft and crews to make safe landings despite dense fog over Britain and the Continent. Book is lightly cracked between pages 116/7 - pages holding firmly minor wear at bottom corners. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling light rubbing a few faint line indentations on rear panel two tiny dents on rear hinge. Reprint. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Grange Hardcover

A PRIMER OF FLYING: AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE IN THE ART OF FLYING.
London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons 1941. 71 pp 7 1/2" H. "Reprinted 1941" on copyright page. Blue cloth with black lettering on spine black lettering and illustration of plane on front board. 18 b&w drawings/diagrams collated. "A thoroughly practical and helpful little handbook which will be of real assistance to the flying pupil who has just entered the elementary stages of instruction. The author has not therefore made any reference to 'stunt' flying with the two exceptions of the stall and the spin into which the beginner might fall by accident. The aircraft referred to are the elementary training types particularly the light and ultra-light aircraft now being produced. Written in simple language and illustrated with clear diagrams the book is intended not only as an introduction to actual flight but also as a preparation for the more advanced books on the subject." Very light browning to edges of text block one very small corner bump Very small stain and dent on front board light color fading to top/bottom edges of boards small area of color fading at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has several small and tiny chips and tears; light rubbing/soiling; light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning at top edge of flaps on spine and on flap-folds; protected in a mylar sleeve. .
