(auch farbig); 21,5 cm; kart.‎ ‎Gutes Ex.; Einband berieben. - ... Unter den Sammlungen der Abteilung Südasien nimmt die Gruppe der Ceylon-Masken einen hervorragenden Platz ein. Mit ihren rund 150 Objekten dürfte sie wohl eine der größten Sammlungen Europas auf diesem Gebiet sein. Ihre Bedeutung und Wichtigkeit ist jedoch nicht nur mit dem außerordentlichen Umfang zu begründen, sondern ebenso sehr durch die Tatsache, daß es sich ganz überwiegend um recht alte und heute zum Teil sehr seltene Stücke handelt. Zu diesen besonders seltenen Exemplaren gehören unter anderen: der vierköpfige Schlangendämon auf Tafel VIII, der Dämon Maha-Kola auf Tafel XII, Königinnen auf Tafel II, Abb. 11,15 und 19, oder Könige, wie Tafel I, Abb. 2 und 5 sie zeigen. Die Masken stammen, sieht man von einigen Ausnahmen ab, aus zwei umfangreichen Sammlungen, die in den Jahren 1880 (Freudenberg) und 1883 (Riebeck) erworben wurden. Ihr wahres Alter dürfte jedoch noch höher sein ? man darf wohl auf ein Alter von 100 bis 150 Jahren schätzen ?, da viele der Masken in Ceylon vorher schon längere Zeit im Gebrauch waren. Sie stammen somit aus einer Epoche, in der Maskenspiel und Maskentanz noch in voller Blüte standen. In der Ikonographie der Ceylon-Masken lassen sich drei große Themenkreise unterscheiden: Menschen (teils realer, teils mythologischer Herkunft) und Dämonen. Durch eine ziemlich gleichbleibende Gestaltung und Farbgebung bei der Hersteilung der Masken haben sich im Verlauf der Zeit unter den Menschen, Tieren oder Dämonen gewisse Typenreihen herausgeprägt, die in den Theateraufführungen und Dämonenzeremonien immer wieder auftreten und vom eingeweihten Zuschauer sofort identifiziert werden können. ...
