Eurasian Empires in Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages: Contact and Exchange between the Graeco-Roman World, Inner Asia and China
8vo, br. ed. 350pp. and Tang China, Persia, Assyria, the Huns, the Kushans and the Franks have been the subject of countless scholarly books and works of literature. However, very rarely, if at all, have these vast pre-industrial empires been studied holistically from a comparative, interdisciplinary and above all Eurasian perspective. This collection of studies examines the history, literature and archaeology of these empires and others thus far treated separately as a single inter-connected subject of inquiry. It highlights in particular the critical role of Inner Asian empires and peoples in facilitating contacts and exchange across the Eurasian continent in antiquity and the early Middle Ages.

My First Trip to China: Scholars, Diplomats, and Journalists Reflect on Their First Encounters With China
square 8vo, br., ed. pp.334. Thirty leading China experts, including Perry Link (Princeton Univeristy), Andrew Nathan (Columbia University), Jonathan Mirsky (Times of London), W. J. F. Jenner, Lois Wheeler Snow, and Morton Abramowitz (The Century Foundation), recount their first visit to China, recalling their initial observations and impressions. Most first traveled to China when it was still closed to the world, or was just beginning to open. Their subsequent opinions, writings, and policies have shaped the Western relationship with China for more than a generation. This is essential reading for those who want to understand the evolution of Western attitudes toward modern China. At the same time, the collection provides a vivid, personal window onto a fascinating period in Chinese history.

KINBERG, J G H (JOHAN GUSTAF HJALMAR)
Novae Literar Asiae Orientalis. A New Alphabet for China and Japan.
Stockholm.: C. E. Fritze's Royal Library. 1901. 26 pages 27.7 x 19.3 cms original green cloth boards gilt-stamped title slight toning to the text block but in very good condition. Scarce work by Swedish physician veterinarian and zoologist Johan Gustaf Hjalmar Kinberg 1820-1908. Kinberg is best know as ship surgeon and zoologist on the Eugenie circumnavigation of 1851-1853 and for his contribution to the classification of Annelida specimens collected on the voyage. This work is his noble attempt no doubt prompted by the voyage to offer a simplified transcription for Japanese and Chinese characters following the work of J. J. Hoffman 1868 and Georg V. D. Gabelentz 1881. Fine letterpress renderings of the characters text in English.

We can trace only a handful of library holdings worldwide. . C. E. Fritze's Royal Library hardcover

Kinkley Jeffrey C.
Chinese Justice, the Fiction: Law and Literature in Modern China
8vo, hardcover in dj, pp-497. During the first thirty years under communism, China completely banned crime fiction. After Mao, however, crime genres of all kinds?old and new, Chinese and Western?sprang up in profusion. Crime narrative again became one of the most prolific and best-loved forms of Chinese popular culture, and it often embodied the Chinese people?s most trenchant and open critiques of their newly restored socialist legal system. This is the first full-length study in any language of Chinese crime fiction in all eras: ancient, modern, and contemporary. It is also the first book to apply legal scholars? ?law and literature? inquiry to the rich field of Chinese legal and literary culture. Familiar Holmesian, quintessentially Chinese, and bizarre East-West hybrids of plots, crimes, detectives, judges, suspects, and ideas of law and corruption emerge from the pages of China?s new crime fiction, which is alternately embraced and condemned by the Chinese establishment as it lurches uncertainly toward post-communist society.Informed by contemporary comparative and theoretical perspectives on popular culture and the fiction of crime and detection, this book is based on extensive readings of Chinese crime fiction and interviews?in China and abroad?with the communist regime?s exiled and still-in-power security and judicial officers. It was in the Orwellian year of 1984 that the authorities set out to control China?s crime fiction and even to manufacture it themselves?only to find that fiction, like the social phenomena it depicts, seems destined to remain one step ahead of the law.
