‎der Einband ist altersbedingt fleckig, im Buch überklebter Eigentumsstempel, Jeden Morgen, kurz bevor im Pekinger Sommerpalast die kostbar-kitschigen Bronzeuhren die dritte Stunde anzeigten, ließ sich Kaiserin Tsu Ssi in ihrer Sänfte vom Wohnhaus zum Empfangsraum tragen. Die kleine, nicht mehr ganz jugendfrische Dame hatte es nicht leicht: Ihren Kopf konnte sie kaum bewegen. weil sonst die Frisur - sorgsam gebundene, rechtwinklig abstehende Haarbüschel - die Form verloren hätte. Mit den Händen konnte sie nicht greifen, weil fünf Zentimeter lange Schmuckplatten ihre Fingernägel bedeckten. Das schwere, mit allerlei Symbolen, Zierat und Schmuck behängte Kleid war beim Gehen hindereh. Schwerfällig kletterte Kaiserin Tsu Ssi die Stufen zu ihrem Thronsitz hinauf.
