Tokyo: Tsutsumi Kichibee 1885. A classic Japanese fairy tale A charming Meiji-era edition of this famous children's tale following two young foxes from their first meeting through to their marriage ceremony. This type of literature experienced a resurgence in popularity during the 1880s as Western notions of childhood entered Japan growing a market for age-appropriate stories with an instructional element. This is part of Tsutsumi Kichibee's ten-volume fairy tale series. Other stories include The Tongue-Cut Sparrow The Quarrel of the Monkey and the Crab and The Old Man who made the Flowers Blossom. Duodecimo. Colour woodblock illustrations throughout; text in Japanese. Original colour printed wrappers renewed white thread fukuro-toji stitching mica decorations on front wrapper. Japan 1858. Five volumes. 58; 58; 54; 58; 58pp. Original stiff textured tan wrappers stitched as issued each with printed paper title label. Some minor shelf wear and dust soiling. Very good. An attractive set of the "Ansei Five-Power Treaties" the formal diplomatic engagements between Japan and the United States United Kingdom France Russia and the Netherlands ending Japan's 250 years of seclusion and opening its ports to worldwide commercial trade so named for their signing in the fifth year of the Ansei era. The first treaty also known as the Harris Treaty was signed by the U.S. on the deck of the USS "Powhatan" in Edo now Tokyo Bay on July 29 1858. It opened the ports of of Shimoda Hakodate Kanagawa and Nagasaki to foreign trade effective July 4 1859 and then Niigata and Hyogo on January 1 1860 and January 1 1863 respectively. In addition to extensive trade and consular provisions the treaty also established the rights of U.S. citizens to reside permanently lease property purchase real estate and construct residences and warehouses; established a system of extraterritoriality whereby U.S. residents were subject only to the laws of their own consular courts and not the Japanese legal system; and established freedom of religious expression and the right to construct churches to serve the needs of U.S. residents within the confines of designated foreign settlements. The treaty followed the Convention of Kanagawa signed under threat of force in 1854 after Commodore Matthew Perry's aggressive visits to the Shogunate in 1853 and 1854. The Convention had granted coaling rights for U.S. ships and allowed for an American consul in Shimoda but Perry left the more important trading negotiations to Townsend Harris New York businessman and eventually the first U.S. Consul General to Japan. <br> <br> Each of the five volumes details the negotiations between Japan and a specific foreign power. These other accords are similar and duly inspired by the U.S. treaty; each nation forced Japan to grant the same "favored nation" provisions they had granted to the U.S. The Dutch already had several treaties with Japan; they were the only Western power to retain trade relations with Japan after the final expulsion of Europeans in 1638 and had been advising and supplying the Japanese navy since 1853. However once the U.S. had sealed its "Treaty of Amity" the Dutch quickly revised theirs to match on August 18 1858; Russia followed on August 19; Lord Elgin signed for Britain on August 26; and Jean-Baptiste Louis Gros commander of the French expedition in China signed for France on October 9 1858. Subsequent Japanese and Chinese scholars refer to these treaties and subsequent agreements as the "unequal treaties" as none of the provisions were ever reciprocated. <br> <br> This set is uncommon. We found only one record for another incomplete set at auction. This is the first time we have handled this title. unknown books

Photograph album compiled by Paul Eugene Shearer US Navy while serving in Japan during the occupation.
Japan and United States: c.1952-57. For the Japanese African Americans were both powerful occupiers and fellow second class citizens A thought-provoking album that offers an insight into the Afro-Japanese cultural exchange during the Allied Occupation. Shearer was a Black US serviceman with Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 120 stationed at Iwakuni 40 km southwest of Hiroshima. His album includes images of the Japanese countryside and people fellow personnel his Japanese wife Hisako and family back home in the States. Shearer 1935-1999 born in Madison Kentucky grew up in Cincinnati spending his later years in California he is buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. His ownership inscription gives his rank as ADJ2 or Aviation Machinist's Mate jet engine mechanic. From around 1954 his unit FASron-120 supported the US fleet's airborne capabilities. A few shots show him in uniform driving that workhorse of the US military the 2½ ton 6x6 truck adapted as a tanker. Some of the early shots show him with Hisako and a fellow serviceman with his Japanese girlfriend. One image pictures the latter clutching a jazz album: George Shearing's Latin Escapade 1957 reflecting the fact that "postwar Japan embraced the music of its former enemy" Van Nguyen. "The postwar period includes some of the richest chapters in the story of Afro-Japanese cultural exchange. The culmination of the Pacific War and the onset of the Allied Occupation of Japan made for heady times in the encounters between African Americans and Japanese people

Original black lacquer music box album orange and white thread binding metal hinges front board painted with Japanese scene in colour rear board with feet and winding key silver speckled endpapers. Music box non-functional scratched and chipped at extremities especially spine and front board lower corner photographs bright a few slightly creased: a very good example. c. 1880-1910. no photographer given. Album has 36 photos 9 x 7-1/2 inches delicately hand-colored; 3 monotone photos 4x3 inches and 8 monotone photos 4-3/4 x 6 3/4 inches. Most of the large photos have a printed label on lower edge of view identifying the locale of the photo. Photographs are of Nikko Chuzenji Ashio Omama Yokohama. Several unidentified photos are of Japanese women in native costume. The boards are foxed. The photos are quite interesting but all are a bit faded and toned giving them an air of mystery. Foxing in margins. Hard to date. Album itself has silk-covered boards with backstrip and tips leather. Album is 14-1/2 x 11 inches. Album cover is only Fairly Good with leather rubbed worn and chipped. Binding inside is very secure and no tears or chips on photos or boards. Pictures available on request. . hardcover

Containing 60 4.5" x 6" silver gelatin prints mounted to heavy gilt-edges card-stock one to a page both recto and verso. Printed captions in English additionally mounted below each photo. Near fine or better with only touches of wear to extremities. Quite well-preserved. <br/><br/>A handsome and rather lavish production by an unknown but likely professional photographer possibly as presentation for special occasion or visit from foreign dignitary/delegation. Undated but clearly pre-war and based on internal evidence ca. 1935-1940. A broad range of scenes from Japanese domestic and cultural life are included: cormorant fishing the tea ceremony flower arrangement Kabuki and Noh theater Sumo and other sports kendo archery battledore shuttlecock festivals musicians rice and tea harvesting as well as scenes of shrines temples cherry blossoms and gardens. More modern scenes include Tokyo street scenes a Nikko cable car and silk mill workers. An attractive and informative look at Japan in the years immediately preceding WWII. hardcover books

kyoto: Miyako Hotel c.1936. A souvenir from Kyoto's famous hotel displaying its picturesque location modern conveniences and its newly constructed annex. Opened in 1900 it was a favourite spot for tourists and regularly hosted royalty and other distinguished visitors. Loosely inserted is a business card for the S. Okumura Gift Shop which had an outlet on the fourth floor of the hotel selling art curios prints and paintings. Landscape octavo. Illustrations in text some colour. Souvenir album presented by the Japanese Government Railways.
Tokyo: Japanese Government Railways c.1928. Seeing Japan by Rail A delightful souvenir album commemorating the visit of some Western guests to Japan at the invitation of the state railway including views of the country's rapidly developing mass transport infrastructure and the tourist locations it served. While the identities of members of the touring party are unknown many of the locations they visited can be readily discerned. The album pictures the railway line near Mount Fuji Tokyo train station the Toshogu Shrine at Nikko and the Kegon Falls. One photograph shows the party learning out of the windows of a first-class carriage while in another they pose outside the famous Fujiya Hotel run by H. S. K. Shozo Yamaguchi 1882-1944. A loosely inserted photograph of the Kegon Falls is inscribed and dated 18 May 1928 on the verso. Landscape quarto. With 20 silver gelatin photographs each c. 110 x 150 mm and mounted on card leaf. Original decorative limp cloth blue silk musubi toji binding front cover with printed and gold-flecked title label brown card leaves with decorative cloth backstrip. Covers lightly foxed and rubbed with a few small stains a little wear to extremities blue silk faded in places photographs well-preserved old tidemarks and skinning at foot of couple of leaves images unaffected. Osaka Japan: Aoki Szandow 1889. C. 120 pages; most of which have an illustration and sometimes two. Text in Japanese; titles given in English. Colin Franklin in 'Exploring Japanese Books and Scrolls' calls these publications an "appealing series of guides As travel within Japan had been restricted for three centuries and travel abroad forbidden these represented the new freedom. They combine charm with taste and a fine vagueness about that obsession of modern publishers "the market." As book-production they jump into more popular format with color-printed pictures over boards to bind themwith English captions erratic and fearless the many hundred illustrations which adorn the Japanese text.were they for the tour-guide to show his visitor - or in the world for Japanese travelers to show their guides Neither of these perhaps just a venture over the border into Western habit.
