The Japan Art Association. Offered is the gold-stamped blue folder with numerous inserts mailed to and received by David Hockney from the 1989 Praemium Imperiale awards program an international art prize inaugurated in 1988 and first awarded in 1989 by the Imperial Family of Japan under the auspices of The Japan Art Association where he and Willem De Kooning won awards for their work in the category of Painting in that year. The folder which measures 9" by 12-3/8" contains the following: 1 Correction slip "Correction: Willem De Kooning winner of the 1989 Praemium Imperiale award for painting was born in Holland but is a naturalized citizen of the United States"; 2 Single sheet "1989 Praemium Imperiale: The First Winners" on quality parchment paper listing the five categories and six recipients: Willem de Kooning and David Hockney are listed under the category of Painting; 3 Single sheet "The Japan Art Association" listing board members; 4 Single sheet "The Praemium Imperiale" founded in 1988 this sheet provides a description of the annual event and its awards process; 5 Two-page "Outline" I: five prize categories; II: each recipient receives $100000; III: day and location of awards ceremony - on October 27 1989 at the Meiji Memorial Hall; IV: list of authorities from The Japan Art Association who select the nominees; 6 Six single sheets one for each artist who won the 1989 Praemium Imperiale award with their photograph and itemized biography containing personal history major works and awards: David Hockney award winner for Painting Willem De Kooning award winner for Painting Umberto Mastroianni award winner for Sculpture Ieoh Ming Pei award winner for Architecture Pierre Boulez award winner for Music Marcel Carne award winner for Theater/Film. Provenance: I purchased this item along with several others at a garage sale in West Hollywood in 1991 given by a young man who then worked at Data-Boy now a long-defunct gay male bar publication with its office located next to David Hockney's office on Santa Monica Boulevard and who had on a few occasions gone through their trash bin and removed several items of ephemera such as this one. Condition: the gold-stamped blue cover folder shows periodic light creases and wear to the upper edges; the interior inserts are in fine condition. Exceptionally rare. . Near Fine.
