New York NY: Japan Society 1971. Presumed First Edition First printing. Pamphlet. Good. 16 pages including covers. Sponsored by Japan House of New York N.Y. This exhibition was sponsored by Kiku Restaurant of Fort Lee New Jersey. The Society was created in New York in 1963 by Professor Motoi Oi to foster and encourage an appreciation of East Asian brush painting. For the initial fifteen years 1963-1978 its annual exhibitions were held in New York City. Over the years the Society has grown and there are many chapters in the United States and a sister organization in Canada. When asked why he had started the Sumi-e Society Mr. Oi answered in part "In the East paintings reflect the great joy of culture. They are a reflection of an intense personal idiom. My idea was to provide a means through which the fresh new spirit of American culture could be viewed in Sumi-e." The exhibition contains black and white illustrations of the eleven Sumi-e drawings which received awards and honorble mentions. There also is a list of exhibitors and a list of members of the Sumi-e Society of America. SUMI-E is the Japanese word for Black Ink Painting. East Asian Painting and writing developed together in ancient China using the same materials -brush and ink on paper. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush. The Chinese speak of "writing a painting" and "painting a poem." A great painting was judged on three elements: the calligraphy strokes the words of the poetry often with double meanings and subtle puns and the ability of the painting strokes to capture the spirit Ch'i of nature rather than a photographic likeness. The artists of Japan Korea and Malaysia learned from the Chinese and then developed their own versions of East Asian brush painting. THE FOUR TREASURES East Asian Painting Tools The tools which are essential are called the Four Treasures. These are the ink stick ink stone brush and paper. Ink Stick and Ink Stone - Asian ink similar to India Ink was invented over two thousand years ago when carbon soot was collected from the inside of the kilns ovens where porcelain dishes were fired baked. The soot was mixed with some glue pressed into a solid stick and dried. The stick was rubbed in water on a stone with a hollow area carved out. Presto Ink! This ink is permanent and still looks fresh on scrolls that are over 1000 years old. The artists used the time of grinding the ink for meditating collecting their thoughts warming up the arm wrist and hand muscles and preparing themselves for writing poetry and/or painting. Depending on how much water is used the artist could grind for five minutes or half an hour. The flat area of the stone is the "land" and the hollow area is the "sea". Brushes - All East Asian brushes have been hand-made using natural materials. Although more than twenty different brushes may be used. Paper or Silk - "Rice paper" is really a generic term for many forms of handmade Asian papers made from cotton hemp mulberry and various other plants. Woven silk was used for a painting surface even before the Chinese invented paper. A finished painting must be wet mounted pasted onto another piece of paper to support and protect it. If well done that process smoothes and flattens the paper removes wrinkles folds and often mends some accidental rips. Japan Society unknown

Nishinomiya Japan: Kanagawa Atomic Bomb Sufferers Association 2005. Presumed First Edition First printing. Trade paperback. Very good. Text in English and Japanese. 6 44 with facing color illustrations 9 pages. Glossary. Name in ink on title page. Slight cover wear. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10 inches. Includes Greetings from Shigefumi Matsuzasa Governor of Kanagawa Prefecture. By the end of 1945 the atomic bombings of Japan had killed an estimated 140000 people at Hiroshima and 74000 at Nagasaki including those who died from radiation poisoning. Often lost in those numbers are the experiences of the survivors known as hibakusha literally "atomic bomb-affected people". Since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan has been a world leader in the anti-nuclear movement. This movement was also prompted in part by American hydrogen bomb tests in the Marshall Islands in 1954. During the Castle Bravo test the largest ever conducted by the United States fallout reached a Japanese fishing boat named Daigo Fukury Maru or "Fifth Lucky Dragon" located 80 miles east of the test site.
