‎La guerre du Pacifique a si peu concerné l'Europe que l'on ne retient généralement de ce gigantesque conflit que certains noms prestigieux ou souvent répétés, tels que Pearl Harbour, Midway, Leyte et Hiroshima. Peu d'Européens connaissent les mobiles profonds et surtout la mentalité de ce peuple japonais poussé à cette étonnante expansion. C'est sans doute dans L'épopée kamikaze qu'apparaissent le mieux ces caractères si surprenants, que l'on comprend assez mal en Occident. Bernard Millot a su, grâce à ses patientes recherches et à ses correspondants au Japon, discerner les origines profondes de cette exaltation patriotico-mystique qui conduisit beaucoup de Japonais à accepter, puis à rechercher la mort héroïque pour la plus grande gloire de l'Empereur, symbole sacré de l'Etat.
