Il se défend, dans sa courte préface, d'avoir écrit pour « les spécialistes d'aucune sorte ». Les spécialistes eux-mêmes, cependant, ne liront pas sans intérêt ni profit ce récit de voyage. Ils y trouveront d'abord des impressions vivantes, exprimées avec talent, ensuite de multiples aperçus sur quelques-uns des problèmes, si importants, qui se posent à l'heure actuelle en Extrême-Orient : l'auteur, sans doute, n'a dû être, en bien des cas, que l'écho de ses informateurs ; mais il parait s'être adressé à bonne source, avoir parfaitement saisi et discuté de façon personnelle les thèses qui lui ont été exposées. Un livre comme celui-là est, par la partie impressionniste, évocateur, par la partie politique et économique, suggestif.
