Bilainkin, George
Hail Penang!

George Town Penang: Areca Books 2010. Expanded revised edition. Hardcover. New. New. . Areca Books has sensibly chosen to re-publish this book long out of print as it is virtually unique amongst memoirs of British colonial life in Penang in the 1920s. What makes the book stand out is not only Bilainkin's lively journalist's skills but also his particular vantage point. He was not a British Government officer planter or other business man but employed by the Chinese owned Straits Echo as their editor. Therefore although part of the colonial community of Penang Bilainkin probably asked more questions and was more observant of what lay under the veneer of colonialism than most of his compatriots. The 304 pages include 56 black and white photographs many of which were not included in the original edition and the chapters include I Towards the Pearl of the East II Ricksha Coolies' Greeting III I Meet The Staff IV The Colour Bar V Keng Hor and Abdul VI Willing Slavery VII Damaging European Prestige VIII Fighting Loneliness Everywhere IX Dr. Voronoff's Ambition X Sidelights on Local Life XI White Outcasts XII Christmas in the Jungle XIII Marriage a Real Lottery XIV Englishwoman on a Leper Island XV Human Suffering XVI Europeans' Manners XVII "Failed B.A." XVIII A Malay Love-Letter XIX Noel Coward's Wizardry XX Racial Clashes and XXI Malaya - For Whom Weight 0.60 Kg. Bird, Isabella
Korea and Her Neighbours
488 pages. Index. "One of the very rare accounts of Korea in the latter part of the nineteenth century. At that time Korea was virtually a forbidden land and had only been open to foreigners for abbout ten years. It was and had been under Chinese influence for centuries. The trip was very difficult but so fascinating that, true to character, Isabella adored it. She undertook many arduous journeys by land and river, observed the breathtakingly beautiful countryside, visited the Buddhist monasteries and had many audiences with the Korean king and his soon to be assassinated queen. While Isabella was on her journey the Japanese invaded Korea and she had to leave hastily, ending up in China, penniless.... Bird won fame in her own time as surely the most remarkable woman traveller of the nineteenth century." - from back cover. Average wear. Unmarked. Binding tight and square. Book

Black Troops, Korea
African American Servicemen in Post-War Korea 1956
Photo archive documenting the daily life and service of African American soldiers stationed in South Korea in 1956 three years after the Korean Armistice Agreement. Archive consists of 22 black and white silver gelatin photos predominately measuring 5" x 4". The images offer a rare visual account of Black military personnel in a post-war landscape revealing interactions with fellow soldiers white servicemen and Korean civilians.

The photographs have been taken near a military base possibly in or around Uijeongbu Seoul or Dongducheon areas where U.S. military engineering and support units were active during this period. A visible sign in one image reads "376 Engineer Battalion" identifying the unit as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The 376th was responsible for infrastructure maintenance road-building and logistical support. Other visible signage includes a shop labeled "Kind Shop" in English and Hangul. Several images feature Black servicemen in standard-issue Army fatigues and caps some appearing to hold non-commissioned officer ranks as indicated by insignia on their sleeves. Their duties seem varied—one soldier in the foreground of a street scene holds a metal container possibly for food or water while another walks behind him carrying a similar object. Another image shows a trio of Black soldiers standing at a fenced checkpoint near a military installation conversing as they keep watch. The collection also captures daily interactions between American troops and local Korean civilians. In two images Korean women in traditional hanbok attire are seen walking briskly past makeshift buildings with tiled roofs likely a marketplace or a village near the military base. The economic hardship of post-war Korea is apparent in the worn structures and unpaved streets. Another photograph features both Black and white soldiers near a convoy of military trucks against a mountainous backdrop indicating ongoing engineering or supply operations. We see these black servicemen manning M35 2½-ton cargo trucks commonly used for transporting personnel and supplies as well as smaller support vehicles. One image also features a C-119 Flying Boxcar aircraft in the background a transport plane frequently used by the U.S. military for cargo drops and troop movements in Korea during this period. While the images clearly depict an integrated unit they also subtly reflect the racial divisions of the time as Black soldiers appear clustered together in their duties and leisure activities.Photos exhibit light surface scratches and some creasing but are in very good condition overall.A rare and historically significant collection documenting African American military service in post-war Korea highlighting the role of Black soldiers in the desegregated U.S. Army and their interactions in a rapidly transforming Korean society. unknown

Black Troops, Korea
African American Soldiers in Korean and Cold War Era Photo Archive
African American Soldiers Photo archive of 24 photos African American soldiers in the 1960s in Korea and Europe. Original Black and white silver gelatin photographs primarily measuring 4" x 3". Circa 1960s. At least half of the photos appear to be from Korea based out of Camp Kaiser and the surrounding area which was a military compound of low cinder block buildings and Quonset huts some 60 miles north of Seoul and about 30 miles from the North Korean artillery arrayed along their side of the Demilitarized Zone. Eight of the photos are captioned ex: "Camp Kaiser" "Korean Home" "Village" "CO Area". Two photos show a European street during a parade where a parade float of a jet titled "General Knuller" is proceeding through a crowd. It is taken from an apartment window on a cross street and appears to be set in an Alpine German speaking area. A few photos depict soldiers standing through the sunroof of a circa 1960 Volkswagen Beetle watching the parade. Another photo of the town shows its fire engines with hoses deployed amid a crowd that has amassed. Another photo depicts an African American soldier standing in front of a wooden sign in the shape of a bull in on a plain in front of an industrial valley. We see a chrome fighter jet on the tarmac of an airstrip surrounded by Air Force personnel as well as the wings of a few other planes including a biplane in the foreground. One interesting photo shows an African American soldier outside a Jewish temple with a Star of David on the front wall and a few planted flags one which has "Troop Att 1964" sewn in along the edge. Another photo shows an overhead view of Camp Kaiser with its sprawling Quonset huts on a plain 60 miles outside of Seoul and about 30 miles from the North Korean line at the Demilitarized Zone circa 1960s. Another Korean scene is of an African American soldier leaning against a tank nicknamed "Kimchee" and one of its crewmen standing through the hatch. Several photos depict the primarily Black troops trekking and camping out in the "ColdWet" environs that could be either Korea or the European Alps. An intriguing photo archive that depicts African American soldiers in both Europe and Asia during the height of the Cold War. In very good condition overall. unknown

Black Troops, Korea
Black Soldier Stationed in Korea Photo Album with over 100 photos
A historically rich Korean War photo album of primarily Black soldiers containing 101 black-and-white silver gelatin photographs. Photos range in time from 1953-60. Most measure approximately 3.5†x 3.5â€. This album meticulously documents the life of a Black soldier who remains unidentified stationed in postwar Korea likely as part of the recently racially integrated 650th Aircraft Control and Warning ACW Squadron. However the album begins with our soldier stationed at Kessler Air Force Base in Mississippi. He is frequently depicted in military uniform across various locales and later photos show to great extent his rich family life and bonds with fellow soldiers Black and White. The photographs are occasionally accompanied by handwritten captions that offer detailed contextual clues including references to bases events and individuals making this an exceptionally well-documented visual narrative of African American military service during this era.

A significant portion of the album documents the soldiers' time stationed in Korea during the mid-1950s as part of the post-Korean War American military presence. One caption notes “Our home in Korea†accompanied by photographs of tents and barracks at what appears to be a U.S. military installation. Scenes of military life in Korea depict GIs engaging in daily routines with equipment such as military trucks and jeeps visible in the background as well as a tent marked with the insignia of the "650th AC&W Squadron" suggesting his involvement in aircraft control and warning operations. Other photographs showcase lighter moments such as a USO show at "K-6 Korea 54" where GIs are seen enjoying performances under a banner labeled “Camp Shows†a reflection of efforts to boost morale during their service abroad. These images provide a vivid picture of life in a war-torn yet rebuilding Korea where American servicemen balanced duty with moments of recreation and connection. The captions and photographs suggest a sense of camaraderie as the soldier and his comrades forged strong bonds while adapting to life far from home. The album also captures his military service across several locations including postings at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota and various locations in Alaska. These captions alongside images of military trucks tents and the setting of Camp Stoneman a major staging area in California during the Korean War provide a glimpse into the military infrastructure and operations of the period. The photographs also include winter scenes likely from Alaska depicting Air Force personnel engaging with heavy equipment and vehicles tailored for Arctic conditions.

The soldier rarely seems to include himself in this album but there are several frequent appearance from friends and relatives also in the service. We meet "Daril" “Bunky†“Peanuts†and others. Daril especially seems to have been close with this soldier as he is identified in captions such as “Daril & Pops†or “John Moms & Daril.†These images reflect the camaraderie and social bonds formed during service. An image of Daril in uniform standing near a car dated 1957 is indicative of his position as a respected member of his unit possibly as a noncommissioned officer. The soldiers' postings to Alaska are particularly well-represented with one caption noting "Party NCO Club Alaska" hinting at his role within the Non-Commissioned Officers community. The album also includes family photographs capturing moments of reunion and celebration such as "Roger’s Birthday Party June 59" “Rochelle & Teresa†and “Mary & Rochelle Nov 59.†These personal scenes demonstrate the soldiers navigated the demands of military life with Daril’s wife identified as “Mary†and their children frequently appearing in domestic scenes. One particularly touching photograph labeled “Mary in Indiana Oct 59†captures a snapshot of Daril’s wife holding their child during a visit.
Travel played a significant role in Daril’s life as evidenced by a series of photos from across the Midwest including Illinois Iowa and Indiana. Images of signs such as “Welcome to Illinois†and “Entering Indiana†accompany snapshots of roadside landmarks. There are also references to the family’s social engagements during their time in Alaska including the lively entertainment scene with photographs of musicians and dancers such as “Mary Rudy & Ina Apr 60†and “LaWanda Oasis April 60.†A unique set of photographs from Anchorage captures cultural events such as “Dog Sled Races†and the “Fur Rendezvous†showcasing the family’s engagement with local Alaskan traditions.

The photographs are mounted on black album pages with gold corner mounts. Some pages are missing photos and album covers have been detached. The tonal quality of the prints is sharp and consistent and the handwritten captions provide invaluable insight into the subjects and contexts of the photographs. Very good condition overall. The album is an extensive and personal artifact that captures the intersection of African American military service midcentury family life and social history during a transformative period in American history. unknown
