Manuscript Scroll Entitled ’In Tarrytown July 4 1971 / A Declaration of Peace’.
Tarrytown NY: N.p. 1971. This calligraphic and decorated scroll measures 19 x 124 inches and is composed of five sheets of laid paper attached. Calligraphic text with decoration on the margins. A very powerful yet attractive document.Written much in the style of the Declaration of Independence this scroll written by a known author and illustrated by an renown artist move in an entirely different direction all the while upholding the principles of the US primary document. The time was 1971 and the anger at American involvement in the war in Vietnam was reaching a fever pitch. Marches and demonstrations not a few of which I was dragged to as a youth were happening across the country violence was done to university students. and thousands of deaths were reported weekly on television. It was a great time of togetherness and everyone pitched in. The makers;Robert Andrew Parker; Robert Andrew Parker graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1952 after serving in the Army in the 1940s. He moved to New York after he spent a summer at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture studying under Jack Levine. Parker continued to develop his printmaking skills at Atelier 17 an historically important printmaking studio founded by the renowned English painter and printmaker Stanley William Hayter. Robert Andrew Parker was also chosen in 1952 as the youngest artist to show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the — Exhibition of American Watercolors Drawings and Prints — the exhibition featured Stuart Davis John Marin Robert Andrew Parker and Jackson Pollock. John F. Mahoney seems have slipped the bonds of history but he had a excellent writing style. A source document. N.p. unknown

His remarkable and moving chronicle of survival and the torture and brutality suffered at the hands of his captors is illustrated with stark black and white drawings by the author who was a self-taught artist. Inscribed on the free front end paper to: "Jan & Marcy - Thanks for helping me make this book a reality. The book is beautiful - it couldn't have been done without your interest and support. It's great to be home! Warmest regards Mike McGrath." With a an accompanying original signed pen and ink sketch by the author dated 10-14-75 and titled: "Greetings from Monterey California." 2 pp written on medium sized notebook sheets. "Dear Unk I'm sorry that I haven't written for awhile but I've been pretty busy lately. Right now I'm on CQ. It's pretty easy. All yuou do is sit in our orderly room all night and monotor radio transmissions and telephone calls. I'm getting a new dog. The Vet thinks Pinger is to old and can't keep the pase. I'm getting one of my friends dogs. This guy was Medivaced out of here after he was stabbed in the chest by some gook downtown. One of my buddies down here in another unit got me some camoflaged fatigues. These would really be great for bow hunting. I hope I can get a few sets of these. The hard part is getting them back into the states. Your not allowed to take them back. Pinger is getting shi9pped back to Long Binh tomorrow. Poor dog. I really feel sorry for that animal. One of the corporals who's going back home on special leave is taking her. For the last three days not counting tonite we were expected to gret hint. There expecting anything from May 1st till at least the 20th. Are you still taking it easy. Better watch out you don't get lazy. Next year I'll keep you busy. Me and Denny will shoot another hole in your garage door just for something to do. Well Unk I hate to cut this short but I've got a few minor things to get done ASAP. "To Hedley Donovan-With reminiscence of our pleasant association. W. C. Westmoreland. March 1969." In his position as Editor in Chief of Time Inc. Donovan had made four trips to Vietnam to see firsthand the people and places being covered by his correspondents and to get a feel for the situation. He met with Westmoreland in Vietnam in late 1965-early 1966 and probably on his subsequent trips.<br /> <br /> Westmoreland was the Time Magazine Man of the Year for 1965. Partly reading "As commander of all U.S. forces in South Viet Nam General William Childs Westmoreland 51 directed the historic buildup drew up the battle plans and infused the 190000 men under him with his own idealistic view of U.S. aims and responsibilities. He was the sinewy personification of the American fighting man in 1965 who through the monsoon mud of nameless hamlets amidst the swirling sand of seagirt enclaves atop the jungled mountains of the Annamese Cordillera served as the instrument of U.S. policy quietly enduring the terror and discomfort of a conflict that was not yet a war on a battlefield that was all no man's land. Thousands marched from Arlington Cemetery into Washington D.C. and other simultaneous demonstrations.<br /> <br /> The Vietnam Moratorium Committee emerged in 1969 as a defining expression of widespread American dissent against the Vietnam War uniting a diverse coalition of students labor activists clergy intellectuals and ordinary citizens in coordinated nationwide protest. Elaine Shepard began her career in Hollywood as an actress under contract with R.K.O. pictures. She starred in numerous films but eventually left acting in favor of journalism. The latter career took her around the world and to Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. She was quite the "Renaissance Woman" and excelled in the field of jounalism normally ruled by men at the time. A very early Vietnam War era novel that predates much of the ground war that would later consume the world. Some wear to edges and spine. A few faint spots. A very scarce book in commerce.
