Octavo 8 1/4" x 5 1/2" bound in full leather with five raised spine bands with red label to spine in gilt lettering with decorative blind-stamped ruled edges. Hill I pp 317-138. Third edition.

"This is the official account of Anson's voyage. England at war with Spain in 1739 equipped eight ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of wealth from the Pacific area. Lord Anson who was a friend and patron of Benjamin Robins after returning from the voyage around the world in the Centurion appears to have entrusted to Robins for revision the account of the voyage which had been compiled from the journals by his chaplain Richard Walter. ARCTIC EXPEDITION 1875.
Copeland Saucer with expedition crest featuring a polar bear marked Discovery marked with Copeland anchor inscribed Arctic Expedition 1875 and their stamp on verso.
1875. Diameter 172 mm; centre a little worn otherwise very good not dishwasher-safe. This is a rare survival from the near-tragic expedition led by Captain George Nares on behalf of the British government in the ships HMS Alert and HMS Discovery. The expedition sailed on 29 May 1875 with the chief aim of reaching the North Pole. Previous American expeditions had led Nares to believe that the best route to the Pole was via Smith Sound but after much hardship this was found to be impracticable and the ships returned to Portsmouth in October 1876. Nares was the first explorer to take his ships all the way north through the channel between Greenland and Ellesmere Island now named Nares Strait in his honour to the Lincoln Sea. This saucer was produced for HMS Discovery captained by Henry Frederick Stephenson. Built in Dundee in 1873 as the whaler Bloodhound the ship was purchased by the Admiralty and fitted out for the expedition. The design of the ship was influential on the construction of Scott's 1901-built research vessel RRS Discovery. unknown

Prutky's Travels in Ethiopia and Other Countries
xxviii546 pages with frontispiece 4 maps plate appendices bibliography and index. Octavo 8 3/4" x 5 3/4" bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and decorative gilt pictorial of the ship Victoria to front cover in original jacket. Annotated by Richard Pankhurst. Second series volume 174. First edition.

Remedius Prutky Franciscan missionary was in 1751 appointed vice-prefect of a mission sent to Ethiopia in response to an invitation by the then emperor Iyasu II; with two colleagues he left Cairo in August and reached Massawa in November. After some delay he was summoned to Gondar which he reached in March and largely by his expertise in medicine began to make friends among the court and the clergy. But the Coptic archbishop at Gondar soon prevailed upon the weak Emperor to expel the missionaries who thus spent only nine months in Gondar and seventeen months in the country altogether. From Masawa the missionaries went to Mocha and thence by courtesy of a French ship to Pondicherry where Dupleix the governor sent them in October 1752 to L'Orient in France. From there they returned to Rome by way of the Canal du Midi and Marseilles. From Rome Prutky recounts his journey to his home in Bohemia his interview with Maria Theresa and her consort and his journey back to Egypt via Leghorn. He then tells of his voyage back to Rome from Alexandria through the Archipelago. The Ethiopian adventure forms the bulk of the whole and in view of the scarcity of information about that country is the underlying reason for the translation of the book. But Prutky's account of Mocha and the European trading factories there as well as his description of India and Ceylon as seen during six weeks in Pondicherry is of no small interest as is his account of Dupleix's recently completed palace destoryed in 1761. Both his voyage from Mocha to Pondicherry and his much longer voyage from Pondicherry to France are given added interest by the inclusion of the daily ship's log. The ends with a sad account not written by Prutky of his final task as Prefect of the mission in St Petersburg from 1766 to 1769 ending with his expulsion from Russia by Catherine the Great and his death in Florence immediately afterwards.

Condition:

Some light rubbing to jacket extremities else a better than very good copy in like jacket.
