The Australian continent stretched for another 2000 kilometres to the north and 2500 to the west and no white man had the slightest idea of what was there. It was to be the first of six expeditions mounted by Stuart then aged 42 as he sought to uncover the mysteries of the interior and forge a path to the north. Ultimately he was to become part of a race across the continent his rivals being the Burke and Wills expedition. In the end Stuart was to be the first European to cross Australia from south to north and return again as the cumbersome expedition of Burke and Wills turned from farce to tragedy. Yet his hero's homecoming was to be shortlived. Barbaroux Charles-Oger, magistrat et littérateur, fils du conventionnel, est né à Marseille en 1792. Il fut d'abord avocat à Nîmes, concourut à diverses publications, remplit, après 1830, les fonctions de procureur général à Pondichéry, puis à l'île Bourbon, enfin à Alger en 1848. A cette époque il fut élu représentant à la Constituante par l'île de la Réunion. Il est mort à Vaux en 1867. (Larousse du XIXe siècle ).

Edited by P E H Hair Adam Jones and Robin Law. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society second series volume 175 and 176. First edition.<br /><br />Jean Barbot who served as a commercial agent on French slave-trading voyages to West Africa in 1678-9 and 1681-2 in 1683 began an account of the Guinea coast based partly on his voyage journals only one of which is extant and partly on previous printed sources. The work was interrupted by his flight to England as a Huguenot refugee in 1685 and not finished until 1688. When Barbot found that his lengthy French account could not be published he rewrote it in English enlarging it even further and then continually revising it up to his death in 1712. The manuscript was eventually published in 1732. Barbot's book had considerable influence on later European attitudes to Black Africa and the Atlantic slave trade and in modern writings on both subjects is frequently cited as evidence.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Back head corners bumped of volume 1 else a fine set in like jackets.
