Im Auftrag Kaiser Karls reiste der Jude Isaak nach Bagdad. Von Harun ar Raschid erhielt er als Gastgeschenk einen weißen Elefanten, Abul Abbas, den er über Jerusalem zurück nach Aachen brachte. Diese Reise wurde 2003 in einer großen Ausstellung in Aachen nacherzählt. Die Ausstellung mit dem Titel Ex Oriente erinnerte an eine Zeit, in der Lux, das Licht, im Osten, Ex Oriente, gesehen wurde, auch durch die Juden jener Zeit. First French edition after the 1748 English edition.<br /><br />Henry Ellis was a traveler hydrographer and colonial governor returned from Italy in 1746 just in time to find an expedition to search for a north-west passage on the point of sailing. He appears to have been in easy circumstances; his name stands in the list of subscribers to the north-west expedition and he had sufficient interest to get attached to it nominally as agent for the committee and really as hydrographer surveyor and mineralogist the expedition consisting of two vessels the <i>Dobbs</i> galley of 180 and <i>California</i> of 150 tons left Gravesend on 20 May 1746 joined the Hudson's Bay convoy in Hollesley Bay and finally sailed from Yarmouth on the 31st. They parted from the convoy on 18 June made Resolution Island on 8 July and after a tedious passage through Hudson's Straits rounded Cape Digges on 8 August and on the 11th 'made the land on the west side the Welcome in latitude 64° N.' Bad weather drove them to the southward and prevented their doing anything more that season. They wintered in Hayes River in a creek about three miles above Fort York where a quarrel with the agent of the Hudson's Bay Company gave an unwonted piquancy to the dark and weary days. They suffered much from scurvy the prevalence of which Ellis attributes to their having got two kegs of brandy from Fort York for their Christmas merrymaking and in a minor degree to the 'governor' not permitting the Indians to supply them with fresh provisions. On 29 May 1747 the ice broke up and they were able to warp to the mouth of their creek; on 9 June they got down to Fort York. There they were allowed to get some provisions and stores and on the 24th cleared the river and 'stood to the northward on the discovery'. On 1 July each of the two ships sent away her long-boat but owing apparently to some ill-feeling between the two captains without any prearranged plan for working in concert. The consequence was that they separately went over the same ground discovering naming and examining the several creeks and inlets on the west side of Hudson's Bay the double examination perhaps compensating for the confusion arising from the double naming. Before the season closed in they had satisfied themselves that the only possible exit from Hudson's Bay on the west must be through the Welcome and that very probably there was no way out except that on the east by which they had come in. The result may not seem much; but as it served to put an end to the idea that the passage must lie through Hudson's Bay it was at least so much gain to accurate knowledge. After 21 August the weather broke and they decided in council 'to bear away for England without further delay.' On the 29th they entered Hudson's Straits passed Resolution Island on 9 September and arrived at Yarmouth on 14 Octivwe. Ellis's share in the work of the expedition had really been very slender but the reputation of it has been commonly assigned to him by reason of the narrative which he published the following year under the title <i>A Voyage to Hudson's Bay by the DobbsGalley and California in the years 1746 and 1747 for Discovering a North-West Passage</i> 1748; a work which with many valuable observations on tides on the vagaries of the compass and on the customs of the Eskimos a people then practically unknown mingles a great deal of speculation on the certain existence of the passage on magnetism on fogs on rust and other matters all more or less ingenious but now known to be wildly erroneous. Such as it was the book commended its author to the scientific workers of the day and on 8 February 1748-9 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society. Possibly in acknowledgment of his scientific labors but more probably by some family interest he was afterwards appointed successively governor of Georgia and of Nova Scotia from which employment he retired about 1770. He seems to have spent his later years as a wanderer on the continent was at Marseilles in 1775 and died at Naples on 21 January 1806.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Some dark spot to spine else a very good copy.</p> Ballard Fils hardcover books‎

Cowan page 195; Graff 1249; Howes E145; Wagner-Camp 148:5; Zamorano Eighty 33 First edition House of Representatives issues of the report containing the reports of Lieutenant Abert Colonel Cooke and Captain Johnson as well as that of Emory; the Senate issue only contained the Emory report.</p><p><br />In 1844 Emory served in an expedition that produced a new map of Texan claims westward to the Rio Grande. He came to public attention as the author of the <i>Notes of a Military Reconnaissance from Fort Leavenworth in Missouri to San Diego California</i> published by the Thirtieth United States Congress in 1848. This report described terrain and rivers cities and forts and made observations about Indians Mexicans primarily in New Mexico Territory Arizona Territory and Southern California. It was and is considered one of the important chronicles and descriptions of the historic Southwest particularly noted for its maps. Emory was a reliable and conscientious cartographer. There is a story of testament as to Emory's dedication to accuracy that says John Bartlett his supervisor in the Corps of Topographical Engineers made him sign off on a misplaced boundary marker creating a sweet revenge for Emory who replaced him as Head of the International Boundary Commission in 1855. So accurate were his maps that when topographical engineers were surveying possible routes for the transcontinental railroad the most Southern route did not need to be surveyed thanks to the outstanding work by William H. Emory. But William H. Emory did more than just map the terrain; he also made notes about the plant life as well as the people who inhabited the sparsely populated southwest. Notating the social relations of some of the Native American people he wrote: "Women when captured are taken as wives by those who capture them but they are treated by the Indian wives of the capturers as slaves and made to carry wood and water; if they chance to be pretty or receive too much attention from their lords and masters they are in the absence of the latter unmercifully beaten and otherwise maltreated. The most unfortunate thing which can befall a captive woman is to be claimed by two persons. ‎* Die Expedition Klein und das deutsch-osmanische Bündnis im Ersten Weltkrieg sind weithin genauso vergessen wie der Krieg im Osmanischen Reich. Die Tatsache, dass Deutschland und das Osmanische Reich vier Jahre lang zusammen als Verbündete kämpften und die türkische Seite mit einer Todesrate von mindestens einem Viertel aller eingesetzten Soldaten eine der höchsten Verlustziffern des Ersten Weltkriegs aufwies, ist fast völlig aus dem allgemeinen Bewusstsein verschwunden. Etwa 20 Jahre nach seinem Orienteinsatz griff der Adjutant der Expedition, Edgar Stern-Rubarth, nachdem ihn die Nationalsozialisten aufgrund seiner jüdischen Herkunft ins englische Exil getrieben hatten, zur Feder und gab seinen Erinnerungen den Titel »Playing Lawrence on the Other Side«. --- Edgar Paul Stern-Rubarth (* 15. August 1883 in Frankfurt am Main; ? 26. Januar 1972 in London) war ein deutscher Journalist und Publizist. Edgar Paul Stern war Sohn einer jüdischen Unternehmerfamilie in Frankfurt. Sein Vater, Moritz H. Stern (1859?1922) betrieb hier eine Zigarettenfabrik, während seine Mutter Martha (1864?1912) literarisch tätig war und enge Kontakte zur Frankfurter Künstlerszene unterhielt. Edgar besuchte das Goethe-Gymnasium in seiner Heimatstadt und studierte in Frankfurt, Berlin sowie in Paris Romanistik und Nationalökonomie. 1916 wurde er mit seiner Arbeit über die Einflüsse Goethes auf den französischen Roman zum Dr. phil. promoviert. Ab 1905 veröffentlichte er Kurzgeschichten, Gedichte und Feuilletons u. a. im Simplicissimus, der Leipziger Illustrirten Zeitung und in der Vossischen Zeitung. Im Ersten Weltkrieg war Edgar Stern im Nahen Osten und an der Westfront eingesetzt. Er machte sich im Spätherbst 1914 mit der Überführung von 14 kriegsgefangenen Muslimen aus französischen Kolonialgebieten vom Senne-Lager nach Konstantinopel im Auftrag des Auswärtigen Amtes einen Namen. Das gesteckte Ziel, das rechtzeitige Eintreffen der Gruppe zur Dschihadproklamation des osmanischen Sultans im November 1914 aus propagandistischen Gründen, wurde dank Sterns Geschick erreicht. Er tarnte die Gruppe für den Transport durch Rumänien als Wanderzirkus und übernahm selbst die Rolle des Zirkusdirektors. 1914/1915 war Edgar Stern Adjutant von Hauptmann Fritz Klein (1877?1958), dessen Expedition zusammen mit arabischen Stämmen zwischen März und Juni 1915 auftragsgemäß die englische Öl-Pipeline am Karun sprengte und gegen die Entente gerichtete schiitische Fatwas in Kerbela und Nadschaf erlangte. 1917 zum preußischen Leutnant der Res. befördert, wurde Stern 1918 mit dem Eisernen Kreuz I. Klasse sowie mit der osmanischen Liakat-Medaille in Silber ausgezeichnet. 1917 schloss er die Ehe mit der in Rheydt tätigen Lehrerin Josepha Rubarth (geb. in Fürstenberg, Krs. Büren1883) im Kölner Dom nach seiner vorheriger Konversion zum katholischen Glauben. Ab Juli 1918 führten beide den Doppelnamen Stern-Rubarth. 1919 wurde er Chefredakteur bei diversen Zeitungen im Berliner Ullstein Verlag. 1925 übernahm er im Auftrag des Auswärtigen Amtes die Chefredaktion von Wolffs Telegraphischem Bureau, seit 1929 auch die stellvertretende Direktion. Diese Nachrichtenagentur fungierte als offiziöses Sprachrohr der Reichsregierung, in enger Abstimmung mit dem Auswärtigen Amt und dem Reichspressechef. Er war 1924 Mitgründer und später Präsident des Europäischen Zollvereins und wurde 1927 Generalsekretär der Deutsch-Französischen Gesellschaft. Stern-Rubarth setzte sich an der Seite Gustav Stresemanns und Aristide Briands für die deutsch-französische Verständigung ein. 1933 erfolgte die Entlassung Stern-Rubarths als Chefredakteur und der Ausschluss aus der Reichsschrifttumskammer, was einem Berufsverbot gleichkam. Er emigrierte 1936 über Genf nach London, wo er bald wieder journalistisch Fuß fassen konnte und u. a. für den Daily Telegraph und The Times schrieb. Nach fünfmonatiger Internierung bei Kriegsbeginn auf der Isle of Man konnte Stern-Rubarth seine journalistische Tätigkeit fortsetzen. 1946 nahm er, der die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit zurückerhalten hatte, auch die britische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Nach 1945 reiste er zu Gastvorlesungen nach Deutschland und arbeitete wieder als Korrespondent für deutsche Presseorgane wie die Stuttgarter Zeitung und den Rheinischen Merkur. Ab 1956 war Stern-Rubarth regelmäßig im Pressereferat der deutschen Botschaft in London tätig. Die Bundesrepublik ehrte ihn 1958 mit der Verleihung des Großen Bundesverdienstkreuzes und fünf Jahre später mit dem Stern zum Großen Bundesverdienstkreuz. In seinem 2018 erschienenen Roman Die Orient-Mission des Leutnant Stern erzählt Jakob Hein, wie Kaiser Wilhelm im Ersten Weltkrieg mit der Auslösung des Dschihads seine Gegner bekämpfen wollte. Um Sultan Mehmed V. hierfür zu gewinnen, schickt er den Leutnant und 14 als Zirkusartisten getarnte Muslime nach Konstantinopel. Zwar erreicht die Truppe Istanbul zur Ausrufung des Dschihads, sie hatte jedoch nicht die gewünschten Auswirkungen auf den Verlauf des Krieges.
