‎Beato, Antonio.‎

‎Vues d'Egypte. Photograph album. Cairo, ca. 1865.‎

‎Oblong folio (510 x 385 mm). 25 albumen prints (ca. 260 x 370 mm), loosely mounted on grey leaves, each captioned in French. Green half morocco. Early, uncommonly well-preserved album of photographs showing the monuments of Egypt. Having arrived in Egypt as early as 1859, Antonio Beato (1835-1906) was among the first commercial photographers to make their way to the Middle East in order to capitalise on the increasing demand for souvenir photographs. Beato's images of Egypt were distinctly different from those of other photographers working in the region (cf. Hannavy). - Binding a little rubbed. Most of the photos signed in the negative, showing fresh and crisp contrast. Hannavy, J. (ed), Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography (Routledge, 2013), pp. 127f.‎

‎Beck, Matthias Friedrich.‎

‎[At-Taqwim sana 609] sive Ephemerides Persarum per totum annum, juxta epochas celebriores orientis, Alexandream, Christi, Diocletiani, Hegirae, Jesdegirdicam et Gelalaeam [...]. Augsburg, Jakob Koppmayer for Lorenz Kroniger and the heirs of Gottlieb Göbel, 1695-1696.‎

‎Folio (213 x 330 mm). (9) pp. of text with an engraved headpiece, (27) pp. of engraved astrological charts, 80 pp. of text with 4 engravings in the text. Title-page printed in red and black. Contemporary unsophisticated boards. Only edition of this rare treatise on the astronomy, astrology and allied sciences of the Arabs, Persians and Turks. Once "said to be the first book printed with Persian characters" (Anderson, The library of the late George H. Hart of New York City, Part II [1922], no. 471), it remains an impressive achievement, even if the oriental languages are here in fact rendered in Hebrew letters, while the Persian specimens are engraved. (The first book in Persian characters was produced at Leiden more than a half-century earlier.) - The Swabian theologian Beck (1649-1701) studied history and oriental literature at Jena, soon surpassing his teachers. "The principal object of his studies always remained the oriental languages; and his great knowledge of Hebrew, Samaritan, Chaldaic, Syriac, Ethiopian, Persian, Arabic, and Turkish gained him such renown that he even drew a pension from the Prussian crown for them" (ADB II, 218). - Lacks the 12 double-page letterpress tables after the engraved astrological charts (which are bound out of sequence). First and last leaf somewhat browned, otherwise very clean. Stamp "Eigentum der Stadt Augsburg" to title-page. VD 17, 39:125183T. Caillet 901. Lalande p. 330. Gardner II, 102.‎

‎As New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Foolscap 8vo. In English. 38 p. Translation: Sükran Vahide. Although this was Said Nursi's sole aim in life, during one period od Turkish history he was misunderstood by the government and spent twenty-five years in exile, driven from place to place and from prison to prison. ‎Bel-Khodja, M'hamed.‎

‎Le Pèlerinage de La Mecque. Tunis, B. Borrel, 1906.‎

‎8vo (155 x 228 mm). 45, (5) pp. With a folding, coloured map and 14 wood-engraved illustrations in the text (one repeated as a frontispiece). Publisher's original blue wrappers, printed in red and black. First edition thus: a French translation of the author's essay on the Hajj first published in Arabic in the "Roznémé Tounsié" (Annuaire Tunisien). The folding map at the back of the volume shows the route of the Hejaz railway, its course completed only as far as Tabouk at the time of publication, while the remainder of the line is shown in its projected state, still planned to run as far as Mecca. Indeed, when the rails reached Al-'Ula station very soon after this book came out, local tribes protested against the railroad, fearing it threatened their livelihood as providers of transport camels. Afterwards, Sultan Abdulhamid ruled that the railway would only run as far as Medina, where the line was completed on 1 September 1908. - M'hamed Bel-Khodja (1869-1943) was born into an Ottoman and Tunisian religious dynasty that was among the most important in the country in the 19th century. In 1902 he became director of the government press; in 1919 he was appointed qaid governor of Gabès and Bizerte, remaining an influential government adviser even after retirement. - A few tiny edge chips to covers, but generally very well preserved. Extremely rare: OCLC lists a single copy (Bibliothèque Gernet-Glotz in Paris). OCLC 690876832.‎

‎[Tafsir wasi` `alá al-ta`lim al-Masihi (...)]. Dichiarazione piú copiosa della dottrina cristiana. Rome, [Propaganda Fide], 1770.‎

‎8vo. 411, (1) pp. (With:) Borgia, Stefano. Irsad li-ajl al-i'tiraf wa-tanawul al-qurban (...) [Instructions for confession and communion]. 109, (3) pp. Contemporary grey wrappers. Third Arabic edition of the complete text of Bellarmino's immensely popular catechism, translated into Arabic for the use of Catholic missionaries. Includes the rare first and only edition of Stefano Borgia's Arabic instructions for confession and communion. Borgia (1731-1804) was appointed secretary of the Propaganda Fide in 1770, the year they published the present third Arabic edition of the catechism. He added the instructions, apparently intending them to be bound with the catechism. - Text entirely in Arabic except for title-page and colophon. Old Bourges library stamp "Ex bibliotheca Majoris Seminarii Bituricensis". Wrappers slightly stained; interior very well preserved. A major product of the Propaganda Fide's efforts to convert Arabic-speaking people in the 18th century, including the rare instructions for confession and communion. ‎Doctrina christiana. Nunc primum ex Italico idiomate in Arabicum, iussu S.D.N. Pauli V. Pont. Max. translata. (Rome, Stefano Paolini f. Typographia Savariana, 1613).‎

‎8vo. (16), (88) pp. With woodcut arms of the Pope on first and engraved arms of Savary de Brèves on final leaf of prelims. Contemporary blindstamped brown full calf with ornamental central and cornerpiece decorations. Marbled endpapers. The first book ever printed with the fine Arabic types of the Roman Typographia Savariana: the first Arabic edition of Robert Bellarmino's catechism, an abridgment of his "Dichiarazione piu copiosa della dottrina christiana" (1598). Translated by the Maronites Vittorio Scialac (d. 1635) and Gabriel Sionita (1577-1648). "Les traducteurs disent qu'ils ont ponctué l'arabe, changé et ajouté quelque chose au texte primitif de Bellarmin, mais avec son consentement. Ce volume rare est le premier publié avec les beaux charactères arabes de Savary" (de Backer/S.). The present copy does not contain the Latin text at all, hence it has only 88 unnumbered pages of text instead of the 171 numbered pages usually cited. This catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter produced the following year would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - Stains and traces of moisture. Old shelfmark labels to spine, cover and final flyleaf; bookplate of the Dutch Jesuit Seminary on final pastedown. Contemp. ms. notes to endpaper. Rare; only two copies in auction records (the last in 1999). Schnurrer 242. Smitskamp, PO 181. De Backer/Sommervogel I, 1188f. OCLC 491559247.‎

‎Bellin, Jacques Nicolas.‎

‎Plan de la ville de Moka située sur la Mer Rouge. [Paris, 1764].‎

‎Engraved map, hand coloured. 330 x 253 mm. Finely engraved map of Mocha, Yemen, from Jacques Nicolas Bellin's "Le Petit Atlas Maritime Recueil de Cartes et Plans des Quatre Parlies du Monde en Cinq Volumes", first published in Paris in 1764. - Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-72) was among the most important mapmakers of the 18th century. In 1721, at age 18, he was appointed hydrographer (chief cartographer) to the French Navy. In August 1741, he became the first Ingénieur de la Marine of the Depot des cartes et plans de la Marine (the French Hydrographic Office) and was named Official Hydrographer of the French King. - During his term as Official Hydrographer, the Depot was the single most active center for the production of sea charts and maps, including a large folio format sea-chart of France, the Neptune Francois. He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction, and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. - Bellin also came out with smaller format maps such as the 1764 Petit Atlas Maritime, containing 580 finely detailed charts. He also contributed many of the maps for Bellin and contributed a number of maps to the 15-volume Histoire Generale des Voyages of Antoine François Prévost, or simply known l'Abbe Prevost. - Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy, thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe.‎

‎Belon, Pierre.‎

‎Les observations de plusieurs singularitez et choses memorables, trouvées en Grece, Asie, Judée, Egypte, Arabie et autres pays estranges. Paris, (Benoist Prévost for Gilles Corozet and) Guillaume Cavellat, 1555.‎

‎4to. 3 parts in 1 volume. (12), 212, (1) ff. With title in woodcut border with Cavellet's device and initials at the foot, each part-title with Cavellet's woodcut device, 1 folding woodcut map (315 x 350 mm) showing Mount Sinai, 44 woodcuts in the text (including a portrait of the author by Geoffroy Tory), and numerous fine decorated initials. Main text set in italic, with preface and commentary in roman. Overlapping vellum (ca. 1600?), sewn on 5 cords, laced through the joints. Third edition of Belon's "Observations", the fruit of his extensive travels in Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon and Syria from 1546 to 1549. The naturalist Pierre Belon (c. 1518-64), famous for his works on ornithology, was attached to the French embassy to the Ottoman Empire, led by Gabriel de Luetz (Luez, Luels) d'Aramont, who aimed at convincing Suleiman the Magnificent to join forces against Charles V. The envoy sailed for Venice in December 1546 and proceeded to Croatia. Here Luetz continued overland to Adrianople (Edirne), while Belon sailed for Istanbul by way of Greece, visiting Lemnos, Macedonia, Crete and Kavala en route. He reached Istanbul in August 1547, explored the city and continued to Alexandria, while Luetz accompanied Suleiman to Persia. Belon's journey continued to Cairo, Mount Sinai, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baalbek, Aleppo, and again to Turkey. - Unlike many contemporary travel writers, Belon does not elaborate on extraordinary adventures, but rather limits himself to detailed observations on mammals, fish, snakes, birds, plants and the manners and customs of the peoples he encountered, commenting only on what he himself had witnessed. The fine woodcuts, attributed to Arnold Nicolai and Pierre Goudet (Gourdelle), include a map of the Dardanelles (Hellespont), a folding map of Mount Sinai, a view of Alexandria, coins with Arabic inscriptions, 3 illustrations of Egyptian costumes, a giraffe, chameleon and, surprisingly, a flying dragon and an armadillo. - The first edition was published in 1553, illustrated with 35 woodcuts only, followed by a second, augmented edition in 1554. The present edition was a joint publication of Guillaume Cavellat and Gilles Corrozet, comprising two issues with either Corrozet's or Cavallet's name in the imprint. - With printed description from a sales catalogue on pastedown, slightly browned, some light waterstains, folding plate mounted. Overall in very good condition. Adams B 564. Aboussouan 94. Ibrahim-Hilmy 61. Gay 10. Nissen, ZBI 304. Tobler 72f. USTC 6761. Cf. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 505 (1st ed. 1553). ‎Belvallette, Alfred.‎

‎Traité d'Autourserie. Paris, Librairie Pairault, 1887.‎

‎Small 4to. (3)-137, (5) pp. (without first blank leaf). With 12 numbered plates. Contemporary green cloth with giltstampes spine title; original illustrated wrappers bound at the end of the volume. First edition of this standard work on hawking with the goshawk. Unnumbered copy of a press-run of only 400, signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title: "à ma chère Marguerite Gorrée". - "In this country we use the term falconry in a somewhat wider sense than is the case in France, including thereby every kind of flight with a hawk, whatever may be its species. French falconers apply the term 'fauconnerie' only to flights with the longwinged hawks (Peregrine, Merlin, Hobby, and Jerfalcon), flights with the short-winged Goshawk (autour) and Sparrow-hawk (épervier) coming under the expressive and very convenient term 'autourserie'. To this branch of sport M. Belvallette has devoted an entire volume, albeit a small one, nicely printed, and illustrated with a dozen full-page plates and some pretty text cuts, which, if not always original (we recognise the work of both English and Japanese artists), are appropriate and fairly accurate. M. Belvallette is well known in France as a skilful falconer, and he writes with a thorough knowledge of his subject. On this account his little book commends itself at once as being thoroughly practical" (Harting). - Free endpapers noticeably browned, otherwise very good. Handwritten ownership of Charles Henry Stanley Garton (b. 1920), dated Kingswood, 1942, to front pastedown. Thiebaud 66. Harting 219. Schwerdt I, 59.‎

‎Belvallette, Alfred.‎

‎Traité de Fauconnerie et d'Autourserie suivi d'une étude sur la pêche au cormoran. Evreux, Imprimerie de Charles Hérissey, 1903.‎

‎Large 8vo. (12), 269, (3) pp. With 35 plates and numerous illustrations in text. Modern red half sheepskin, with the original publisher's printed wrappers bound in. Rare first and only edition of a work on falconry, followed by a short treatise on cormorant fishing by Alfred Belvallette, "well known in France as a skilful falconer, and he writes with a thorough knowledge of his subject [...] French falconers apply the term fauconnerie only to flights with the long-winged hawks (Peregrine, Merlin, Hobby, and Jerfalcon), flights with the short-winged Goshawk (autour) and Sparrow-hawk (épervier) coming under the expressive and very convenient term 'autourserie'" (Harting). The work partly contains original illustrations, including many photographs of falconers in action, but also copies after Schlegel and others. - Belvallette is best known for his earlier work "Traité d'autourserie" (1887), the present work includes this topic as well, but is not included in Bibl. accipitraria or Schwerdt. - With only a couple of spots, otherwise in very good condition. Thiebaud 66. Cf. Harting 219; Schwerdt I, 59. WorldCat (9 copies).‎

‎Benigni, Rudolf.‎

‎Österreichische Botschaftsberichte über arabische Länder. - Austrian Embassy Reports on Arab Countries. Wien (Vienna), Österreichisches Institut für Bibliotheksforschung, Dokumentations- und Informationswesen, 1974.‎

‎8vo. 130 pp., 1 bl. f. Publisher's original printed wrapper. The "Austrian Embassy Reports on Arab Countries": a catalogue of and guide to all relevant documents in the Vienna State Archives formerly kept at the Imperial Internuncio and later the Embassy in Constantinople from 1750 to 1918. The documents relative to Arabia include numerous pieces on the Sherif of Mecca, the Wahhabites, the Pacha of Jeddah, Sheikh Faisal's threat to Hajj pilgrims, and British interests in the region; others relate to the Wahhabite movement in Syria, the English blockade of Mocha and various insurgencies in Yemen, as well as events in Arabic countries from Iraq and Kuweit to Algier and Morocco. "Old Austria, beyond suspicion of imperialistic designs or ambitions of colonialism, was vitally interested in preserving the Ottoman Empire and protecting both its own chartered rights and the rights of man in this enormous territory, as well as in advancing the local economic development, a process, indeed, in which the Habsburg Empire itself played an important part. The diplomatic reports reflect this situation. Striving as they did to represent the facts without any political bias, strictly according to facts, they are of especial interest to the historian. They comprise a vast area stretching from the Arabian Gulf to Morocco on the Atlantic" (introduction). - Insignificant bumping to extremities; altogether very well preserved copy of this indispensable and rare volume of reference.
